To Comply with State Mandates:

• Most effective option for Glendale is to prohibit haulers from sending commercial waste directly to landfill

• Either Source Separate or send to certified mixed waste processing facilities

• City will maintain free collection of recyclables from businesses and multi- family dwellings to help comply

•Fully supported by Grocery Store Industry•Banned disposable single-use plastic bags in grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience food stores •Paper bags made from 40% post-consumer and 5 cent fee•Reusable bag incentives and free to lower income

Current Municipalities pursuing ban:Santa Monica County of Los AngelesCity of Los Angeles Manhattan Beach

over 30 other municipalities

BEYOND RECYCLINGFOOD SCRAP COMPOSTING:

A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR OUR COMMUNITY

•Fifty percent of Glendale waste is compostable (22% non-paper organics and 28% paper).

•State is moving toward requiring 75% waste diversion and food scrap composting is probably necessary to meet that goal.

•With waste disposal decreasing at Scholl Canyon Landfill due to mandatory commercial recycling, the Landfill is a promising site for a composting facility.
