Betty Shirley, Pastor of Mary’s Chapel UMC reports that extortion is alive and well amongst her

flock.

The first Children’s Message following Annual Conference 2012 served to bring to the kids and

the adult congregation a new awareness of the “Imagine No Malaria” campaign. Emphasis was

made that only $10 could and would save a life…what a small sum to make such a great differ-

ence.. a difference between life and death.

Then a naive, unsuspecting person challenged the kids that they would match whatever funds

the kids brought to the altar and the “Change for Children” jar. Bankruptcy would surely follow.

As the weeks went by instead of nickels and dimes being spotted, large bills appeared and by De-

cember over $1000.00 was collected for “Imagine No Malaria”.

Stir God’s people’s hearts and wonderful things happen….we see the evidence everywhere.

The Holston Conference Foundation’s Imagine No Malaria $50,000 grant will match individual gifts of $1000 or above that are either given through churches directly, through the district or directly to the Founda-tion. Churches and districts need to forward a copy of the check to the Foundation. The Foundation will send a letter to the donor informing him/her of the matching funds.

Jubilee Project, Inc. is still alive and well. We are located in

Sneedville, TN which is the county seat of Hancock County. We are a

mission oriented organization that serves the citizens of Hancock and

surrounding counties. In June of 2012 a new director, Rev. Allen

Karnes was appointed in addition to his appointment to the Sneedville

Circuit of the United Methodist Church.

2012 was a very busy year. Many hours of labor were exerted to carry

out our core values which are food security, shelter, access to clean wa-

ter, self-worth and love, and the spiritual development of the people we

serve.

In 2012 we gave out 11,498 pounds of food. Based upon $1.69/pound

this had a net worth of $19, 431. Winter coats were distributed to resi-

dents of the area at a total dollar value of $44,760. Backpacks and sup-

plies were distributed to students at a cost of $25 per student totaling

$9,150. $6500 was spent on home repairs and this did not include any

of the volunteer labor from work teams. There were 927 snap boxes

given to the youth at a service cost of $4,635. At Thanksgiving 450 din-

ners were distributed to needy families so they could prepare their own

thanksgiving meal. One group came in and prepared about 1000 meals

the day before Thanksgiving and residents of the area could come and

enjoy the meal and fellowship. Several prom dresses and tuxedos were

supplied for junior/senior prom. We also distributed about $2,025

worth of furniture to those who needed it. Many other items were dis-

tributed through Jubilee. The total value of goods and services provided

in 2012 was $345,578 and approximately 20,403 people were served

these goods.

This work could not have been done had it not been for donations, sup-port, and prayers from churches and individuals from many areas of the country. Preparing for Holston Annual Conference

Your conference staff are very excited to let you know about new on-line registration procedures for Holston's 2013 Annual Conference.

Gone are the days of the registration cards! Begin-ning Tuesday, March 12, all Annual Conference members (clergy, lay, and at-large) will register for Annual Conference on-line. This easy new process will not only allow the Annual Conference member to register on-line but they will also be able to:

• Order the Book of Reports by credit card or check or print the downloadable version

• Register their children for childcare

• Make a reservation for the Missions Celebra-tion dinner

• Sign up for the Fun Run event to benefit Imag-ine No Malaria and

• View the Annual Conference schedule or the Special Events schedule other Annual Confer-ence related information!

Annual Conference members who do not use a computer or have internet access are encouraged to call Dixie at the District Office between March 12 and June 3 for assistance in registering. She will collect the required information from you and register you online.

Housing reservations will be handled the same as in years past. The annual call-in day for housing on the grounds will be March 12, beginning at 8:00 a.m. You may also make your housing reser-vations online beginning March 12.

All Annual Conference members should have re-ceived a mailing last week with further informa-tion about online registration and housing reserva-tions. If you have not received your letter, please contact the District Office.

In an effort to better serve you and to be better stew-ards of the askings each church sends to the District for ministry we have been seeking alternatives. To be more effective as a Creation-Care District, we will be saving a tremendous amount of paper (trees). Ris-ing costs in paper and preparation for mailing have been instrumental in our decision. Beginning with the next newsletter, we will be sending hard copies of the newsletter, in a different format, to these per-sons in each church: Clergy, Administrative/Council Chair, Finance Chair, Lay Leader, Lay Member to AC, PPR Chair (Charge), Treasurer and Trustee Chair. If these persons have email, they will receive the newsletter electronically as opposed to a hard copy. We are asking that once you have read your hard copy, please take it to your church and post it where others can see it as well.
