Insurance as a return official sponsor, is one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the state and the biggest fundraiser for MDA in northern Wisconsin. The venue has raised some $2 million for families living with neuromuscular diseases since 1983, when organizers began donating to MDA. Monies raised during the Tomahawk Ride provide care for clients and expanded research.

MDA raffles a brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycle as a fundraiser. Tickets are sold throughout the Northwoods by MDA and all proceeds benefit them.

Keep in mind that SARA Park is the only location where 100% of the proceeds benefit MDA.

New this year, Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 has taken over guardianship of the downtown Tomahawk festivities. That focus will be on veterans, with a M*A*S*H theme from the hit TV series adding to the fun and excitement.

Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 has declared this “The Year of the Veteran” and nowhere will that focus be more evident than as the post assumes oversight of this year’s downtown Tomahawk Fall Ride activities.

A MASH theme is drawing its own historical fun as Tomahawk’s Mayor Steve Taskay is dressing the part of Corporal Klinger. A MASH character Look-Alike Contest adds to the excitement. Businesses are vying in a military window-decorating contest. There’s also a MASH Trivia Contest in this Guide for you to enter. Entries are being taken at the VFW Command Center tent, a makeshift Korean-era first aid station located on South Second Street downtown.

Hopes are, too, that motorcycle enthusiasts will show their colors and support for veterans with a large turnout for this year’s Friday night Thunder Parade. The procession winds 18 miles along back roads before ending up downtown for that night’s Street Dances. Among the dignitaries riding this year will be Gary Wetzel, a Wisconsin Vietnam-era Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. The Tomahawk VFW and its Auxiliary have been reaching out to motorcycle groups affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, AMVETS and motorized Honor Guards inviting them to attend this year’s Fall Ride and participate in the big Thunder Parade, note Tomahawk Commander Gerald Dvorak and Auxiliary representative Pat Haskin.

A special sticker (distributed at the parade lineup at the Tomahawk School Complex between 5 and send-off at 6 p.m. Friday night) will be given to those who have served as a way to identify them in the parade.

The VFW hosts a monthly “Pancake Breakfast with a Vet” and will do so again the Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings of the Fall Ride. Serving will be from 7 to 11 a.m. at the hall, 203 S. 4th St.

Ten local non-profits will be featured as food vendors downtown during Friday and Saturday’s street dances.

Keeping with its theme, the VFW will stock two beer tents – “The Swamp” and “Rosie’s” – one at each food court. Bartenders are forgoing tips those nights, with collection jars encouraging contributions to The Never Forgotten Honor Flight and the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation, aka Camp Hackett near Phillips. Since 2008, the Tomahawk VFW has donated some $20,000 to those causes. The Never Forgotten Honor Flight sends veterans to Washington, D.C., for an action-packed day of excursions to see the monuments that pay tribute to them. The foundation offers fishing, bow, rifle and bear hunts to wounded veterans.

Dvorak can speak personally to the bonding and healing that takes place on and after a Never Forgotten Honor Flight. He was one of 92 Vietnam and six Korean veterans who traveled to D.C. in May. On that trip there was a local veteran who suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder who had never let anyone know accounts of the horrors that haunt him from his wartime service. Green Bay Packer fullback John Kuhn was on that same Honor Flight and he and this veteran struck up a friendship, Dvorak said. It was in front of the Vietnam Memorial that the inner torments were first shared and, when all was said and done, the local veteran reacted with the biggest smile, Dvorak noted.

“He wasn’t the only one who came to terms with the welcome home,” Dvorak said of the unfriendly reception many veterans faced after that war. This veteran’s relief was obvious throughout the rest of the trip. Once the smiles started, he couldn’t stop them, Dvorak added.

“The Honor Flight was extremely therapeutic,” Dvorak said on behalf of so many veterans who have felt the same way. There was a lot of bonding and healing by Vietnam vets as they came off the plane, he observed: “The Honor Flight works!”

WHAT DOES MDA DO?Tomahawk’s Ride helps progress;

100% SARA Park proceeds support cause

The Fall Ride in Tomahawk, Wis., is much more than a huge gathering for motorcycle enthusiasts. At the crux of the annual event is raising money for a worthy cause – the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

MDA’s mission is to save and improve the lives of people fighting 43 muscle diseases, including AlS, SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and dystrophies. Muscular dystrophy is a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass.

“Now is a very promising time for MDA. We are seeing progress from the dollars that are raised and those supporting Tomahawk Fall Ride at SARA Park have a lot to do with that progress,” states Lauren Nelsen, MDA fundraising coordinator, Green Bay. “Many of our kids with a life expectancy of their teens are now living well into adulthood. We are constantly working for treatments and cures, while providing supportive services to help quality of life and maintain independence.”

There are two MDA offices in Wisconsin. The MDA Green Bay office covers 39 different counties in the state and up into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, serving more than 800 clients living with muscular dystrophy, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s) and other muscle debilitating diseases.

Where does the money go?•MDA Care Centers – “At no cost to our MDA clients,

they are able to see a neurologist, pulmonologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, and equipment specialists all in one appointment,” Nelsen notes.

•MDA Summer Camp – “For our kids living with muscular dystrophy or other muscle debilitating diseases this is known to be the best week of the year. Not only is it fun and a place where they can just be a kid, it allows them to learn to advocate for themselves and their needs. What they experience and learn at camp helps them well into their adulthood. MDA Summer Camp gives them the courage to be independent and have confidence,” she states.

•Equipment Repairs – “We assist in power mobility and manual mobility equipment repairs.”

•Support Groups – “MDA wants not only our clients to have support, but support for the families that love them too.”

•Research – “MDA’s overall mission is to find treatments and cures. Really, that is what our client’s and their families are hoping for too. That is the overall goal,” Nelsen states.

According to Nelsen, “77 cents of every $1 goes directly to the clients that we serve.”

She reminds those attending the Fall Ride that SARA Park is the only location where 100% of the proceeds raised, goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All proceeds from Bike Raffle tickets purchased at the Harley-Davidson Somo Avenue plant, BP in Tomahawk, and at SARA Park go directly to MDA.

Dairyland Cycle safety focus in third year

The Fall Ride’s official sponsor, Dairyland Cycle Insurance, is invested in multiple ways again this year, doing what it can to promote and help people safely enjoy the huge motorcycle rally in Tomahawk.

A $12,000 per three-year sponsorship is only part of the firm’s commitment to support the Ride and raise funds for the continuing event beneficiary, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

This is the company’s third year of this unique undertaking, notes Carrie Feinen, Dairyland motorcycling marketing manager. It’s the only event like this they sponsor, she says.

The pairing seemed natural, Feinen adds. Based out of its parent company’s headquarters, Sentry Insurance in Stevens Point, Dairyland was attracted to Tomahawk’s Fall Ride because it benefits a great cause and is nearby, she states.

Much of the funding has gone toward bringing in entertainment in past years, with the Tomahawk VFW receiving $7,000 this year to help form a base for its oversight of the downtown events.

In addition, Dairyland creates and picks up the cost for specialty Fall Ride T-shirts. The public can purchase them at SARA Park or Bubba’s Big Party for a minimum $10 donation.

This official logo will be featured on Tomahawk Fall Ride apparel being sold by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), the beneficiary of the local Ride. Get your sweatshirts and t-shirts at SARA Park. Volunteers who help with this year’s Ride also will be showing off the logo.

Proceeds go directly to MDA, Feinen says. The first year, T-shirt sales meant an extra $11,000 donation from Dairyland to MDA. Last year the total topped $16,400.

The big focus by Dairyland this year will be on safety, particularly at the high traffic intersections of Hwy. 8 at County Roads L and A. Last year the Department of Transportation (DOT) had cameras mounted in those locations and footage showed a near miss in which a semi almost clipped the last cyclist as a large group passed through, Feinen says. “They (the DOT) were shocked by how many close calls there were,” she adds.

Dairyland has met with the State Patrol, Tomahawk’s police chief and the DOT to formulate a safety plan, Feinen says. The message is aimed at both motorcyclists and other vehicle drivers, she says. “As motorcyclists we want other drivers to watch out for us,” she notes. But it works both ways. Cyclists who might leave an intersection en masse need to make sure it’s safe, she warns. Use good judgment. “We also need to be mindful and respectful … We need to be aware of others, too.”

In past years, Dairyland used billboards to call added attention to the Tomahawk Ride. This year there’s a strong Facebook awareness, with flyers distributed to local dealerships and businesses. An email survey to policyholders also reminded them of this year’s event.

Feinen says she always prays for good weather as Fall Ride approaches. Safety, too, is on her mind. And, as it has the previous two years, Dairyland takes great pride in wishing for great success for MDA.


Friday and Saturday evening Downtown Street Dances will be a big draw again during Tomahawk’s Fall Ride for MDA. A pair of bands will hit the stage on each end of West Wisconsin Avenue (downtown) following the conclusion of the Thunder Parade Friday and again Saturday starting about 7 p.m. Sponsored by The Liquor Store and The Rodeo/Pik’s Pub, with financial assistance from Dairyland Cycle Insurance, the Street Dances are free to the public.

WEST END BAND: Following the Thunder Parade. OIL CAN HARRY has been a Wisconsin favorite since forming in 1997 and a Fall Ride returnee. Featuring three lead vocalists and live harmonies, Oil Can Harry plays rock, pop and a dose of modern country thrown in for good measure. The group has won many awards, both collectively and individually.

Tomahawk VFW Post 2687 is focusing on veterans as it takes command of this year’s Fall Ride downtown activities. One of the exciting results is welcoming Vietnam Medal of Honor recipient Gary Wetzel back to Tomahawk to help lead this year’s Friday night Thunder Parade – in large part a military tribute.

The Medal of Honor is this nation’s highest military honor. Today, only 54 Vietnam honorees are alive out of 248 total Medal of Honor recipients. More than 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam, representing 9.7% of their generation.

Wetzel of South Milwaukee was friends with Tomahawk’s own Korean War Medal of Honor recipient Einar Ingman. He was one of the dignitaries on hand to help Einar celebrate his 85th birthday on Oct. 6, 2014. Our local hero died less than a year later on Sept. 9, 2015. This city’s VFW and American Legion posts both bear Ingman’s name.

and two years later, after re-enlisting, the Private First Class was serving as a door gunner in the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company.

Just shy of two weeks before he was scheduled to return home after serving two tours, Wetzel was shot down (his fifth time) on Jan. 8, 1968, near Ap Dong An in the Republic of Vietnam. His helicopter crashed and Wetzel and others came under heavy enemy fire.

Severely wounded by an explosion that nearly severed his left arm, he tucked the wounded limb into his belt and continued to man his machine gun and help other injured soldiers. Wetzel tells of doing his “John Wayne run back to the chopper,” being hit in the leg, tending to the wounded, helping pull others to safety, and eliminating enemy fire.

Wetzel noted others said he saved a lot of people, but he responded, “I was busy. I wasn’t counting.”

Wetzel and the other survivors were rescued the next morning. His arm was amputated in a field hospital. He then spent approximately six months in a Toyko hospital.

He was subsequently promoted to Specialist Four and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions by President Lyndon Johnson on Nov. 19, 1968, in a ceremony at the White House.

When asked what the medal means to him, Wetzel has told others, “When I was in the Tokyo hospital, where the doctors took out more than 400 stitches, some of the guys I pulled out who were recovering from their wounds found out I was there. They would walk up to my bed and ask, ‘Are you Gary Wetzel?’ And I’d say, “Yeah,” and they would pull out pictures of their wives, kids or girlfriends and say, ‘Hey, man, because of you, this is what I’ve got to go back to.’” And Wetzel replied, “I’m not Superman. I was just a guy doing his job.”

More recently he said he hopes public awareness of his actions help America’s youth understand the price of freedom.

An official during ceremonies last year to re-christen a Milwaukee street in Wetzel’s honor said: “Because Gary doesn’t have one ounce of quit in him, there are fewer names on that wall in Washington, D.C., than there might otherwise be.”

Wetzel is one of about 30 of 87 Medal of Honor recipients – who in spite of, or perhaps because of the harrowing experiences, physical wounds and emotional trauma they have endured – have joined the “Speak Out, Save Lives” campaign. Their message is designed to stem the rising tide of suicides among military service members today. Their message is simply, “Don’t let the enemy defeat you at home!”

Wetzel says people tend to look at the Red, White and Blue and think of it only as a flag.

He states, “I see into the flag – beyond the flag … the men and women (and their sacrifices it took) for us to be here right now.”

In addition to music, there will be Saturday’s Custom and Classic Car Show with over 100 vehicles. More than 100 companies will be on hand for the tradeshow and swap meet, and there will be plenty of food vendors available from multiple genres.

The Nokomis Fire Department will host a Pancake Breakfast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 11 a.m. The Northwoods Passage Snowmobile Club will be hosting Barstool and Lawnmower Racing on Saturday.

As in years’ past, admission to Bubba’s Big Party is free to the general public during Family Day on Saturday until 7 p.m. There will be non-denominational church services held under the big top each morning presented by the Christian Motorcyclist Association at 9:30 a.m.

Troutman emphasizes that the events not only bring great crowds, business and fun to Tomahawk, but they also benefit the town of Nokomis and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

getting together in October 1982 is the official inauguration of the Tomahawk Fall Ride. Money raised went to a charity, although not to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Harley-Davidson, Inc. and the Harley Owners’ Group came onboard in 1983 when about 300 riders on 160 motorcycles took part in an Oct. 8 90-mile ride along Lincoln County backroads. Afterwards, they were treated to free beer, brats and door prizes at the Tomahawk Harley-Davidson plant. Some $350 was raised for MDA – Harley-Davidson’s charity of choice – through a $2 registration fee.

In hopes of more favorable motorcycling weather, the event was moved to early September in 1986. About 1,200 people on 676 cycles enjoyed the day, raising $3,200 for MDA.

The Fall Ride moved permanently to SARA Park in 1989. Attendance estimates soared to 5,000 people that year and donations to MDA neared $10,000.

The popular bike raffle was added a year later. A 1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster was the first cycle given away and was won by a Merrill man.

In its 10th year in 1991, the Thunder Parade rumbled for the first time through the streets of Tomahawk. An estimated 4,000 riders attended, even in pouring rain. Organizers upped the ante on the raffle bike, offering a new Big Twin FLHS Electra Glide Sport. More than $20,000 was raised for MDA.

The brand new Tomahawk Harley-Davidson North Plant opened for tours during the 1995 Fall Ride. The crowd was estimated to be about 13,000 strong at its Saturday peak. All 30,000 raffle tickets were sold and the total donation to MDA topped $80,000.

A green and gold raffle bike personally autographed by Green Bay Packers Coach and Harley-Davidson enthusiast Mike Holmgren commemorated the Packers’ Super Bowl championship in 1997. The donation to MDA topped $100,000, with more than $67,000 raised from the bike raffle alone. Attendance estimates hovered around 30,000 people and 15,000 motorcycles. About 1,600 riders participated in the Fun Runs and 1,000 rode in the Thunder Parade. A downtown street dance following the parade Friday night was added to the list of weekend activities.

The Fall Ride’s 20th anniversary was observed in 2001. The event helped observe the opening of the State Hwy. 51 four-lane bypass. For the first time, two raffle bikes were featured with a grand prize Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic and a second place Sportster. An estimated 4,000 bikes rode in the Thunder Parade which followed the northbound lanes of Hwy. 51, the highway’s first traffic. A candlelight vigil was held as many bikers paused to honor those who died just a few days earlier in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City,

Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. Harley-Davidson, the parent firm, marked its 100th

anniversary in big fashion in Milwaukee in 2003. The celebration also was noted at Tomahawk’s 2003 Fall Ride as Harley-Davidson’s Tomahawk Operations noted its own important milestone – 40 years of being an integral part of the company and the Tomahawk community. A Blind Ride was offered for the first time during which the Tomahawk Lions Club and Northern Lights Harley Owners Group (HOG) took 14 visually-impaired people on the 18-mile Thunder Parade. Local MDA donations totaled $112,000.

Perfect motorcycling weather Sept. 16-19, 2004, pulled in an estimated 40,000 people and 20,000 motorcycles. Some $160,000 was raised for MDA, including $75,000 from raffle bike sales.

Celebrating its 25th milestone in 2006, the Tomahawk Fall Ride saw a record 45,000 visitors to the city with about $141,000 raised for MDA. A ceremony commemorated the quarter century milestone of the Ride at the Tomahawk Post Office with the unveiling of the first day cancellation of the 25-year anniversary Tomahawk Fall Ride cancel.

The Tomahawk Downtown Business Council, Tomahawk Post Office and Tomahawk Leader teamed up to present one-of-a-kind 2007 Tomahawk Fall Ride collector items: two postcards, a limited-edition Fall Ride stamp and a special one-day motorcycle pictorial cancellation dated Sept. 14, 2007.

The hosting community was in a bit of a funk in 2010 despite the excitement over welcoming our motorcycle friends. Our local Harley-Davidson plant had just finished a union vote that would help keep the company in Tomahawk and Wisconsin, and we were only weeks away from the closure of Veterans Memorial Bridge for removal and total reconstruction. The latter proved to be a financial burden on the community as well as an inconvenience for the next nine months.

The bridge reopened and additional roadwork on North Fourth Street was timed for completion just before the 2011 Fall Ride. The rumble was back in the air and spirits were high as Tomahawk’s Fall Ride’s 30th anniversary was celebrated.

Dairyland Cycle Insurance became the official event sponsor in 2014, committing a $12,000 donation each of three years, plus promoting the Tomahawk event through billboards in large market areas around the state and mailings to Dairyland policy-holders as well as additional support and subsequent large donations to MDA.

Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 has declared 2016 the Year of the Veteran, taking over the downtown Tomahawk portion of event planning during this 35th anniversary observance. A MASH theme from the TV series is the focus of added enthusiasm, with a “Command Center” tent, and MASH look-alike, trivia and business window decorating contests, along with an emphasis on involving veterans in an even bigger Thunder Parade. Their proceeds will support veterans’ causes including the Never Forgotten Honor Flight and Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation. MDA remains the focus at SARA Park and through many other endeavors.

Participate in Blind/Disabled RideIt’s been described as a RIDE OF A LIFETIME.

The Tomahawk Lions Club and Northern Lights Harley Owners’ Group (HOG) are again offering motorcycle rides for the blind, disabled and those on Medicare disability – including disabled veterans – as part of this year’s Friday night big Fall Ride Thunder Parade. Participants should meet at the Tomahawk School complex between 5 and 5:30 p.m. and will be assigned an escort for the 18-mile ride through the back roads of Tomahawk, ending en masse in downtown Tomahawk. Of note, no sidecars will be available this year so riders must be able to straddle and ride on the back of a motorcycle. They should wear appropriate clothing and if under age 18 they must have a helmet. HOG will provide the drivers. The opportunity has drawn people from Wausau and Madison in past years, notes organizer Orrin Kolberg. Some have had just such a ride on their bucket list, he says. Saving sight and helping the blind are ongoing programs of the Lions Club organization locally, nationally and internationally. Devin Argall is called courageous – an inspiration for everyone, including his teachers.

Hopes are that Devin will be able to attend this year’s Fall Ride in Tomahawk, but he is undergoing a clinical trial at a children’s hospital in Chicago that may not make the trip possible.

Devin was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at age 2 and he’s continually beating the odds. He’s still walking today – which is a rarity, notes MDA’s Lauren Nelsen. Usually children at his age have assistance or rely on mobility equipment, she says.

Two videos on You-Tube introduce you to the unassuming young man who is inspiring to many.

When he was first diagnosed, people said he’d be in a wheelchair at age 10 or 12, Devin says.

“I like proving people wrong,” he states.

About Tomahawk Operations•Harley-Davidson Tomahawk Operations consists

of two facilities, one on Kaphaem Road and one on Somo Avenue, which include 192,000 square feet on 96 acres used to support production. Together they employ just over 300 people.

•Employees at Tomahawk Operations paint components that are shipped to York, Penn., and Kansas City, Mo. These parts are then assembled on Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

•At the Kaphaem Road facility, windshields for both current production models and Genuine Motor Parts and Accessories are produced. Hard Candy Custom painting is also completed at Kaphaem.

Even later in life, he says some said his ability to walk wouldn’t last long.

Devin responds, “Watch me!”According to his family, the Muscular Dystrophy

Association has been there for them from the beginning. “MDA is like a second family to us. … They’ve given us

hope,” Devin’s mom, Dawn, says.The videos talk about Devin’s daily regiment of medicine

and his ongoing trips to visit doctors throughout the Midwest. Devin says his doctors are impressed with him because

he’s still walking. “I feel like I should keep trying to impress them. … If I stop I could end up in a wheelchair. … (There could be) a cure soon,” he offers.

The medical trial in Chicago is working with a drug doctors think will help, his dad, Josh, notes.

Each Friday Devin goes for an IV infusion of medicine to keep his muscles from deteriorating. Hopes are the drug will receive FDA approval and help other kids.

“Devin is excited to do his part to advance the medicine. He doesn’t look at it as just for himself, and that’s what he’s about,” Josh says.

In Devin’s words: “I enjoy being the State Ambassador for MDA because I like to help the muscle disease community and to help spread awareness for MDA and what they do to help the community. I may not have the same title in a couple years but I’ll never stop doing all I can to help the MDA help those who need it most.”

LAWNMOWER ANDBAR STOOL RACES

If you came to town on a motorcycle, you might be interested in the wild competition pitting a different form of wheeled transportation! Take the short ride out to Nokomis Community Park on Saturday, Sept. 17 for the 11th annual Lawnmower and Bar Stool Races. (Yes, lawnmowers can kick up quite a bit of dust, and barstools aren’t just for crowding up to a bar.)

Time trials are at 11 a.m. with racing at noon. Races are held at the race track behind the Nokomis Fire Department.

“It is amazing watching the lawn mower racers and bar stool racers go around the curvy track as they try to pass and gain the lead over their fellow racer. A few spills and a couple blown motors keep everyone wondering who is going to win the race. It is fun hearing the screams, cheers and ooohs and aaahhhs from the crowd,” says Lori Rogney, one of the organizers.

“Racers come from Tomahawk, Jump River, Sheldon, Ladysmith, Medford and other surrounding areas. The racers compile points throughout the season as they race almost every weekend in different locations. The races on Fall Ride weekend conclude their season circuit and the racer who has compiled the most points is crowned the season winner,” she adds. “Spectators enjoy watching this unique racing experience as it isn’t something you see on a frequent basis ... and it is good family entertainment.”

The park is located on County Road L, north of Tomahawk. Food and drink concessions are on site; no carry-ins, please. Admission is free.

Northwoods Passage Snowmobile Club coordinates the event and proceeds support efforts to groom and maintain 275 miles of snowmobile trails around the Tomahawk area.

New ‘Chrome Fun Run’adds to the enjoyment

•There’s a great way to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and see the scenic Tomahawk area at the same time. Participate in a Fun Run.

This year features a new route – a Chrome Run – that ventures west for the first time. A Black Run also is organized, with a potential for an Orange Run to be added to the lineup.

“The ride out west is beautiful,” says organizer Roxanne Consolver, who considers planning the rides as a great way to mix her passion for the Fall Ride, motorcycles and supporting her community. “It’s a good way to see the scenic area and enjoy the sponsors,” she states.

Fun Runs start and end at SARA Park on West Somo Avenue, the local MDA headquarters during the Tomahawk motorcycle rally. Cards are available beginning Thursday. The rides are intentionally kept fairly short (at least 100 miles) so participants can take in additional events and other rides during the extended weekend. For $10 you register and get a Fun Run card and a map of the route. Consolver notes that those routes have been road tested and are far more reliable than using one’s own GPS. The cards are stamped at sponsoring locations.

The Chrome Ride is approximately 125 miles long. The first stop is for breakfast at Road Lake Pub, which is opening early for those who want to get on the road right away. There’s food and beverages available at every stop. Other Chrome stops include Bev and Tom’s, Rib River Bar and Grill, Patty Jo’s Crossroads and Tri-Mart BP in Tripoli. The Black Run includes T. Murtaugh’s Pub, Northwoods Harley-Davidson, Lake of the Torches Resort Casino, Fisher’s Resort, Bar and Grill, and the Merc Stop Pub.

Rides can take place Friday and Saturday. Completed cards are turned in back at SARA Park by late Saturday afternoon for a chance at prizes. Winners are announced Saturday around 5 p.m. Money raised goes to MDA.

Roxanne, who is assisted by husband, Kelly, and friends Barb and Steve Kubichek, loves riding her 2014 Softail Slim. The Harley-Davidson employee personally donates her time to this and other causes, many of which involve riding her motorcycle.

Harley-Davidson began producing parts in 1963. In 1965, Tomahawk Operations became the

sole supplier of the fiberglass parts including sidecar bodies, saddlebags and windshields. In 1995, the North Plant was added to accommodate increased production of sidecars, windshields and the painting of starter motors.

In 2002, Harley-Davidson added a 60,000-square-foot facility on Kaphaem Road. A few years later, a 35,000-square-foot addition was built to house injection-molding operations. Shortly after that, windshield operations also moved to the Kaphaem Road plant.

In 2014, Tomahawk Operations started painting Hard Candy Custom parts. This complex painting process required a new, innovative sanding cell and work process. The following year also saw several new process developments, including a new silk screen machine, and a new router and state-of-the-art oven in the Windshield department.

‘Sisters’ form bond through love of motorcycles

Nestled in the Northwoods is a one-of-a-kind female riding group, Our Sisters of the Open Road.

Based out of Tomahawk, they have members in surrounding communities as they continue forming new bonds with women in Wisconsin who share a common love of riding motorcycles. Their mission is “to promote and empower women riders of all ages and experiences. To encourage women riders to gain new, and long lasting friendships. To be kind, and helpful to one another.”

They focus on building friendships with each other through meals, such as fish fries at least once a month. Through activities ranging from cake decorating, to painting with wine, to a sleigh ride, they try to get together twice a month, especially during the winter months when weather doesn’t permit riding.

In the riding months they plan scenic motorcycle rides together; whether just an afternoon trip here in the Northwoods or a long trip out-of-state to South Dakota as an example. The women get together and build memories with new and old friends.

puts her in “a happy place.” The smells and scenery are special, she adds. “Tomahawk is beautiful. Even cow poop smells good on a bike,” Consolver says.

The Fall Ride has a huge trickle down effect for the whole community, Consolver notes. Some businesses might not see it immediately, but if a bar, for example, does well, its owners might redecorate or contribute to a charity, she offers as examples. The wellbeing of her beloved community is always on Roxanne’s mind, and being able to enjoy it on the back of a motorcycle makes it all the better.

•The Friday night Thunder Parade is a treat for anyone who wants to participate. It takes off at 6 p.m. (with lineup about 5:30 p.m.) from the Tomahawk School District complex on King/School Road. Participants travel in a long caravan along an 18-mile route through the scenic countryside, winding up in downtown Tomahawk just before that night’s Street Dances. This year there’s an extra focus on involving and saluting veterans. Come join the procession and give a wave as you pass thousands of onlookers along the route.

The Fall Ride brings in at least 10 times the normal population of Tomahawk, notes Tomahawk Police Chief Al Elvins. Motorcycles from all over the country make the ride to Tomahawk to participate in the many choices of entertainment and the huge fundraiser for MDA.

One of the tasks the Tomahawk Police Department takes on during this four-day event is naturally crowd control. Local police rely considerably on mutual aid from surrounding agencies to assist the Tomahawk PD with ensuring safety among other duties during the event. The cost is astronomical, totaling about $19,000 spent towards mutual aid. Help with this expense is appreciated. In July, Chief Elvins made note of the first local donation and said even the smallest amount helps. Donations toward the expense can be dropped off at the PD or mailed to his attention.

He asks that the public stay vigilant, always keeping an eye out and contact the police department if something does not seem right. The police would rather check on potential situations that are observed than have an incident occur that otherwise could have been prevented, the chief says.

Patience is something that everyone should exercise as traffic increases tremendously and there understandably will be a lot of congestion and some inconvenience. Elvins notes that Nicolet College assists the Tomahawk police with the No Parking areas, motorcycling parking and with barricades.

He reminds everyone to watch out for motorcycles and use common sense especially while driving downtown and at SARA Park.

Chief Elvins says this is an amazing event that brings in a lot of revenue for MDA and the Tomahawk community. It also brings people together for a wonderful cause and he would like to see it be another successful year and safe time for everyone participating.
