Royal Rangers is a principal ministry of the

Assemblies of God focused on discipling boys

for Jesus Christ. We provide Christ-like char-

acter formation and servant leadership devel-

opment for boys and young men in a highly

relational and fun environment. Our mission is

to evangelize, equip and empower the next

generation of Christ-like men and lifelong

servant leaders.

The Potomac District administrative region of

the General Council of the Assemblies of God

takes in Washington, D.C., Maryland, most of

Virginia and northern West Virginia. Over 100

churches throughout this region currently

provide Royal Ranger ministry to more than

2,500 boys and young men. We use many

tools to achieve that goal whether it be camp-

ing, merits or interactive skills, all designed to

help develop a boy into a man while having fun

and getting to know God.

We want to develop both men and boys in

mentoring relationships and leadership skills,

and guide them to Jesus Christ. We reach

boys, so they may reach another in their

world.

Message from the National Director By Karl Fleig

I ’m coming into this position at a great time. Royal Rangers has seen many changes over the last

several years, and as a result, we are better equipped, more relevant, and poised for our greatest days. Our last Camporama in 2012 was the largest ever. New outposts are being char-tered every month, and churches that haven’t had Rangers in a while are coming back. Just a month and a half ago, the largest Rendezvous ever was held at Camp Eagle Rock! Director Marsh and the national team have done a tremendous job; we owe them a huge debt of gratitude. It’s because of their hard work we get to do the fun stuff! As I contin-ue to get settled into the position, I feel our focus needs be on stability and growth. We have had many necessary changes and improvements in recent years. We now need to provide additional assistance to outposts in understanding and implementing them to ensure everyone in Rangers experiences the benefits they bring. Secondly, we will focus on growth. As mentioned above, we are already experiencing the benefits of the last few years. As others continue to embrace and understand the Rangers ministry, we will continue to see even more. I loved the theme of the last Assemblies of God General Council, “Believe.” This year the Assemblies of God celebrates its 100th anniver-sary, commemorating when 300 gathered, believing God to raise up a movement for “the greatest evangelism the world has ever seen.” We are part of the Church that believes in “...Him who is able to do immeasura-bly more than all we ask or imagine...” (Eph. 3:20). Royal Rangers is the result of an individual who dreamed and be-lieved. Johnnie Barnes started it, but the reason Rangers still exists and thrives today is because every man and woman involved in the ministry since then still believes. They believe that God has a plan for them and that they can make a difference. They believe that they can do all things through Christ and that evangelizing, equipping and empowering the next generation of Christlike men and lifelong servant leaders is possible. They believe because He who began a good work in them will bring it to completion and that influencing more boys and young men than ever, more effectively than ever is going to happen! Never has there been a time that so desperately needs what we do. I believe God has positioned the Royal Rangers ministry for such a time as this. I’m excited and ready! Thank you to each of you for what you do. Our future isn’t up to one person, but together, infused with the Holy Spirit, our best days are ahead! Together in His Service, Karl Fleig September 2014

A s the weather gets colder and the days get shorter we can reflect on the

warmer days of summer. The 2014 Potomac District Pow Wow is now a fond memory. What great altar services; God showed that when we pray and rejoice in his name he will make is power real. Many lives were changed. Time to break out the rakes and clean off the yard just in time to get out the snow shovels, snow blower, winter clothes, gloves and the four buckle artic snow shoes. Well maybe not right now. We do, however, have a few upcoming events early in 2015 for the Rangers of the Potomac District. First is the opportunity for Junior Leadership Training. Plans are finalized for the 2015 Junior Winter Camp, and the second opportunity comes from the Northeast Region in the form of “Empower 15” - the Northeast Region Royal Ranger Leaders Conference—on Jan. 23-24, 2015 in Harrisburg Pa. Jonathan McKee - a renowned author and ministry leader in youth training—is the featured speaker. Train-ing and workshops will include Ranger Basics, Ranger Essentials, and First Aid/CPR training. Special activities for spouses and kids, along with a cowboy-themed ban-quet are among some of the other highlights. I strongly encourage all our Ranger leadership to consider attending and taking advantage of the training and fellowship.

Registration details are at www.northeastregion.org. Another item I would like to bring to your attention is the newly designed Potomac Royal Ranger ring. It can be customized for leaders and boys of the district. See the announcement in this addition of the Tomahawk for de-tails. It will make a great gift for a GMA recipient or any leader or Ranger in the Potomac District. As the time of my writing this, the 2015 District Pow

Wow is only 278 days away. Feels warmer already! I

would however like to be one of the first to wish you and

your family a blessed and Merry Christmas and a safe

and prosperous New Year. To God be all of the glory!

A ll outposts are invited to attend Light for the Lost (LFTL) banquets

scheduled for each section with-in the Potomac District between April 12 and April 21. Light for the Lost is admin-istered by National Men’s Min-istries but fulfilled by the church as a whole. Through generous giving of churches, individuals and businesses, LFTL assists missionaries and missions pro-jects around the world with evangelistic resources to share the gospel message. Commanders who plan to attend with their Rangers are asked to make reservations with the host church or banquet point of contact at least 10 days prior to the event. Points of con-tact for making reservations to each banquet can are listed on the tour schedule. Also at the banquet, oppor-tunities to contribute to ongoing Light for the Lost projects will be presented. Faith promises made by outposts and churches that are funneled through the district’s Royal Ranger office are directly distributed to Royal Ranger missions activities spe-cifically, such as efforts by Royal Rangers International to sup-port Ranger ministries around the world. For more information on the Assemblies of God Light for the Lost ministry, on the web go to www.lftl.ag.org. What’s On My Mind? By Bob Blessing

I am not a very big social media guy. I know that there are many social media sites: Flickr, Instagram, Google Plus, Linkedin, Twitter and Face-book. Nevertheless, the company I work for asked us to join Linkedin, so

I did, although I never spend any time on it. I also decided to join Facebook, initially as a means to keep up with the Royal Ranger young men that come through our Junior Leadership Training camps. Now that I’m in the position of District Commander, I have found Facebook also to be helpful in keeping up with fellow commanders. The other day I wanted to post something. I went to do this on Facebook and was asked, “What’s on your mind?” Well, a lot, I guess. You see, I’m one of those unfortunate men whose mind never shuts off. Last year I was teaching my Expedition Rangers from the book Guys are Waffles and Girls are Spaghetti. We learned that guys have a “nothing box.” I think mine never developed. My wife always says that my mind never shuts off; I don’t ever stop thinking. Sometimes this can be a positive thing until it’s time for vacation. Lately I have been thinking quite a bit about the changes that we will face this year in Potomac District Royal Rangers— going to a new site for Junior Leadership Training Camps and

generation of Christian men. As a district, I would encourage us all to do our very best to reach the lost. Royal Rangers is just the ministry to do just that. Roy-al Rangers can be exciting, loud and big—three things that we learned during LTC (did I just date myself) that boys are drawn too. This comes from my heart. I know that in a very busy life we can get mired down with all of the issues that come our way. Remember, “Success doesn’t just come and find you, you have to go out and get it!” So let’s continue to be diligent for the cause of saving boys’ souls and developing the next generation of leaders in the Potomac District.

District Pow Wow. A lot of information will be com-ing your way in future months about this change. I want to challenge you all to keep an open mind on the change of venue. As we find our way through 2015, one of the big challenges that we all will face is how to build this ministry. We all have an obligation to the young men in our communities to promote Royal Rangers. As this year comes to a close, let’s evaluate: has our outpost grown? If so, then to God be the glory! If not, then what could be done differently to encour-age local growth? The Kingdom of God will be blessed by your efforts to evangelize, equip and empower the next

On Saturday, with the exception of Survival, 10 merits were offered—BB Gun, Fishing, Lashing, Fire Craft, Rope Craft, Tool Craft, Archery, Camp Safety, Dutch Oven and Knife and Hawk. Five leaders completed Ranger Essentials on Saturday and 10 boys completed the three Survival mer-its through the weekend. The largest fish caught was a 12-inch bass, and 20 boys earned Cut & Chop cards. The Saturday council fire ser-vice opened with an impromptu

melodrama, followed by praise and worship and a powerful mes-sage from Pastor Dan Dillon of Bethel Church (OP 80) centered on overcoming obstacles. Over 30 boys responded to the first altar call (praise the Lord!) and many more later for prayer. The fun event was a junk food throwing challenge and was won by Mount Olive (OP 56). Many thanks to six GMAs for instructing, countless leaders for site prep and bringing boys, Queen Pope from Heavenly Waters and New Life Church and Jamie Hicks for hours of mowing.

district, the executive staff ap-proved a new location—Boy Scout Camp Rock Enon in Gore, Va.—as the site for JLTA and Pow Wow beginning next summer. Camp Rock Enon consists of 860 acres nestled in the foothills of North Mountain near Winchester. The camp was first opened in 1945 by the Shenandoah Area Council as its Boy Scout Summer Camp. Over the years many upgrades have been made but the “rustic splendor” enjoyed in 1945 are still enjoyed by all. There is a small lake, rock climbing, large dining hall and more showers! Camp Rock Enon is still being utilized as the summer camp for Boy Scouts and also for Cub Scout Resident Camp, Cub Weekend Camp, and Explorer/Venturer weekend camps. In addition, over 3,000 Scouts and Scouters from Cub Packs, Scout Troops, Venture

Crews and Explorer Posts camp on their own during the off-season. The site of Camp Rock Enon was originally the home of the Rock Enon Springs Resort. Rock Enon Springs Resort was built up around a mineral water spring and was originally called Capper Springs after an early settler, John Capper. In 1856,William Marker bought the property and built a hotel to accommodate guests at the springs. The resort contained six types of springs on the 942 acres of property. During the mid 19th cen-tury, it became very popular as a place for people to heal various ailments by soaking in the spring's "medicine" waters. The resort survived the Ameri-can Civil War and continued to draw Virginia’s elite. It changed owners several times until, in 1919, it was purchased by Fred Glaize,

A new chapter in Potomac Royal Rangers begins next year. Because a considera-

ble number of school districts in our region are now starting earlier, the district staff decided it was time to change the dates for the Junior Leadership Training Acade-my (JLTA) camps and district Pow Wow, to schedule those events earlier in the summer. For 2015, those dates will be as follows:

July 26-29 for JLTA

July 30-Aug. 2 for Pow Wow

Although Broad Creek Camp in Whiteford, Md., has hosted Po-tomac District’s JLTA and Pow Wow for over two decades, the camp could not accommodate an earlier summer date for these key Ranger events. After visiting a number of po-tential alternate sites within the

Wow or any of the JLTA training camps? Deputy District Cmdr. Homer Kitchen faithfully gathers up all the gear typically left be-hind from each Pow Wow week-end—hats, T-shirts, camp chairs, towels, sunglasses, you name it. Broken or damaged items are disposed of, and no, he doesn’t keep socks, underwear or soap either. He has to rent a trailer each year to haul the stuff off. OK, maybe that’s exaggerating the point a bit, as the Geico™ gecko is fond of saying, but hopefully you appreciate the message. Anyway, Cmdr. Kitchen keeps lost and found items for about three years. After that, he tries to give the goods away to less fortunate boys and church-es. If you’ve realized since you returned home from Pow Wow that you’re missing something of value, give Cmdr. Kitchen a call at 304-261-2027 before he goes donating.
