Belvedere Marittimo
Belvedere Marittimo is a town in the province of
Cosenza. Its territory covers a stretch of the
Tyrrhenian coast from Serluca Calabaia to Santa
Litterata, passing through Capo Tirone.
The old town has maintained all the
characteristics of an ancient medieval
hamlet with noble buildings, alleyways and
gates, and it overlooks a wide view of the
mountains and sea.
The old town of Belvedere Marittimo holds
several monuments and churches, including
the Cappucini Convent which is dedicated to
home-town saint San Daniele, who was born
here and martyred in Morocco in 1227. The
convent contains the mortal remains of St.
Valentine inside the altar. In fact, Belvedere
Marittimo celebrates the saint with a big
party, earning the town the name of "City of
love", bringing couples here to declare their
love or celebrate their anniversaries every
Valentine's Day. The convent's cloister is a
lovely space of arcades enclosed within the
building, with a water well in the middle.
The castle with its heavy cylindrical towers was originally built by
the Normans in the 11th century but was redone by the Aragons in
their preferred style in the 1490s, giving it the distinctive look
their Spanish-influenced fortresses are known for.
The tower of Tirone is a 16th century
Spanish water tower on the coast, in the
modern town of Marina di Belvedere,
which was originally a coastal defense
structure, then used as a customs house
to assess taxes and control the
movement of goods in these waters. In
Belvedere, you'll find a modern town
centered on the waterfront, with beaches
backed by the bluff, and the old town of
Belvedere visible behind it on the hill.
The hills offer natural sculpture
formations created by wind and erosion,
with hiking trails and beautiful views.
Diamante: The City of MuralsIn Diamante you can visit a lot of things, for example, the
murals. In fact, Diamante is called "the city of murals"
because there are a lot of them.
The murals are an attraction for tourists. They were
painted in different periods and every year, in summer, a
lot of tourists take pictures of them. Moreover, some
murals represent people that lived in Diamante in the
past.
Artists come to Diamante to draw and to express their
ideas on the walls of houses!
At the end of summer, in a period that goes from 5th to 9th
of September, there’s the Hot Chili Pepper Festival. In this
period, a lot of tourists (about 100.000 people) come to
see this festival.
In the picture, next to Elisabetta Gregoraci, there’s the
king of the Hot Chili Pepper, Giovanni Pellegrino. He’s
such a funny person! There are also a lot of attractions,
for example, giants on stilts, flag-wavers, musicians, etc.
This is a fantastic festival and people who come to
Diamante to see it have a lot of fun!
Hot Chili Pepper Festival
Every year, people that organise this festival invite a famous person. Last year, for example, Elisabetta
Gregoraci came to Diamante for the festival.
