rowing up as the youngest of four,
I found myself emulating my older
siblings. An admiration most commonly
viewed as pestering, eventually made
me regret placing them in such high
regards. Until one, cold spring day…
G
y father and I were visiting my
oldest brother in Indianapolis, Indiana,
where we had plans to explore a
local creek and fish along its banks.
As we departed for the creek, I had
an uncontrollable excitement for
adventure growing within me. As soon
as we arrived, I bounced out of the car
and into my fishing gear.
M
ust as I was about to forge the
current, my brother picked me up off
the ground; I was destined to cross the
creek on his shoulders. I was covered
from head to toe with fishing vest
and waders. I was safe from the frigid
waters, and could do it myself, or so I
had thought.
J
fter we navigated the currents
of the creek, I was lowered from
my makeshift carriage. Eager to be
the first one to catch a fish, I boldly
jumped from rock to rock trying to
reach the fish. Within reach of my
destination, I slipped, and water began
to pour into my waders.
A
y feet felt like ice cubes as I
jumped out of the water. My legs were
soaked to the bone. Embarrassed, I
emptied the water from my waders and
continued on, determined not to ruin
the trip. I kept my mishap a secret,
until my brother saw me shivering on
the bank of the creek. He reeled in his
line, walked toward me, and asked me
if I needed anything. Disgruntled, I sat
down and took off my waders to show I
had fallen.
M
y socks were wet and my feet
were freezing. I sat there waiting for
laughter and criticism to come from my
brother’s mouth, but was surprised by
what happened next. My brother sat
next to me, took off all of his fishing
gear, and offered me his socks to warm
my feet.
M
o this day, I have never
underestimated the impact of a simple
gesture. While it may be simple, it can
make a world of difference to a person
who needs it.

first heard about TOMS shoes and
the One for One campaign from my
sister, Libby. When I saw a giving video
I realized no one is more deserving
of charity than children, and I knew
I had to become a bigger part of the
movement.
I
he first TOMS event I participated in
was the One Day WithOut ShOeS campaign.
I walked all over Indiana University’s
campus barefoot, spreading the
TOMS mission to curious passerbys. I
participated again April 5, 2011, and
took a more active role in promoting
the event. I influenced the Indiana
Daily Student, the campus paper, to
publish an article about the event.
T
y favorite TOMS adventure took
place in London, where I traveled with
my TOMS to Trafalgar Square. I was
able to have my picture taken in the
claws of one of the square’s massive
lions. I captured a similar moment in
the Cayman Islands during an exclusive
study abroad program. To date, my
TOMS have accompanied me to four
different countries.
M
graduated Indiana University
with a degree in Biology. I began
college with the aspirations to treat
illnesses and help people. However, as
I continued through my college career,
my aspirations began to shift from the
hard sciences to a life long passion
for the arts. Due to the intensity
associated with IU’s Biology program,
I felt I had invested far too much in it
to give up without graduating with a
degree I earned.

he hard sciences instilled a sense of
structure of discipline in my design
work which has allowed me to display
my pieces in art galleries and produce
concert posters that were mass
produced.
T
will be able to bring a new
perspective to the TOMS team. Working
at a young age and in a competitive
atmospshere, I developed the skills to
be a quick study and self starter. As a
result I developed a high expectation
for the work I produce and take a deep
personal pride in what I accomplish.
I
he kindness shown to me by my brother
and the work ethic I grew up with has made
me into the person I am today: a smart,
hard working, and creative individual who is
capable of being more that an intern, I can
be an active team member.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I
am looking forward to talking to you soon.
