In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One.TM Five years later, TOMS realized this movement could serve other basic needs and launched TOMS Eyewear. With every pair purchased, TOMS will help give sight to a person in need. One for One.TM As more everyday choices have the power to impact the lives of those around the world, the TOMS movement will continue to grow and evolve.

Born in a small rural village in Nepal, Salma was a young girl with less-than-bright prospects in a poverty-stricken community. Unable to attend school with the boys, her father wanted a different future for his daughter. They traveled to India so she could attend school and choose her future. Salma chose to become a doctor. Specifically, a pediatric ophthalmologist.

Her medical degree was just the beginning. Salma returned to the village she was born, where her family still lived, as a full-fledged doctor. Only she didn’t come alone: she brought an entire an entire team of surgeons, setting up a health center.

“Since it was a dream of my dad of my grandfather, I thought I should do something for the village. So we set up a health camp, a surgical camp, where we operated on around 65 cataract patients. And one of the patients was my own grandma.

When I go back to my village, I think my family is proud to see me as a doctor. And I hope it inspires the younger generation that is still in school.

I have a dream that no child should go blind. With TOMS and Seva’s help, I think I can help resolve this problem.”

A full day’s walk on unpaved roads is not easy for anyone, especially for 70-year old, legally blind men like Gyaljun. Fortunately, he had help from his family: his son carried him the whole way and they stayed with relatives in town.

When a member of the eye camp team asked his wife what they did for a living, she laughed and replied, “We are poor, so we have to do everything and anything we can…we cut the grass if it needs to be cut and we walk the buffalo when they need to be walked.”

After receiving cataract surgeries in both eyes, his joy was contagious. “Now I can see with both eyes!” For the first time in over a year, he was able to see his wife clearly. “I can see her now, and she is beautiful.”

His wife was grateful for different reasons: “Thank you so much, now I don’t have to take care of him. And our son won’t have to carry him back home.”

Two year-old Unisha is an extremely shy girl, clinging closely to her father before her surgery for bilateral cataracts. It is an experience her father, Kamal, is familiar with: 16 years ago, he had cataract surgery of his own. Unfortunately, it was too late to completely restore his vision.

Even with glasses, his vision is extremely poor. Like any father, Kamal wants a better future for his child, which is why he made the long journey to the eye camp.

After Unisha’s surgery, the doctor is pleased with the results. “Her brain will start to register the images and she will regain vision quickly.”

Kamal insists on bringing our team to his home – he is ecstatic that the operation was a success. The whole time, I had tried to speak with Unisha, to get her to smile and let us know how she felt. She said little and showed even less expression.

But I watched her on the car ride to her home, I saw her looking out the window, and I caught her smiling into the distance. That was all the response I needed. (Excerpts taken from an intervew with TOMS Employee Heidi Psyk)

John Whitledge Visualiza Clinic, Gautemala City

As the original designer of TOMS Eyewear, John Whitledge has deep roots in our vibrant history. Last spring, he traveled with Chief Shoe Giver Blake Mycoskie and a team from around the world to support our giving efforts in Guatemala and Peru. It was an eye-opening experience for the accomplished fashion designer. “Before this trip, I only thought cataracts affected adults, and mostly the elderly. But at the Visualiza Clinic (Guatemala), I was surprised to see so many young children afflicted by cataracts. We saw a surgery on a child only a year and a half old, (John spreads his hand about two feet apart) he was only like this big. There were numerous children from ages three to five that were in the clinic getting surgeries. One kid didn’t have cataracts, but was cross-eyed, and he was there to receive surgery to fix that issue. It was cool to know that we were contributing in this way too.”

The clinic is run by Dr. Mariano, who first operated as a private practice but wanted to help his community. One side of the clinic functions as a private practice, while the other serves as a social practice for patients who cannot afford eye care. In the same way that TOMS’ giving is funded by customer purchases, Dr. Mariano funds his social practice with income from his private one. “Right when we arrived at the clinic, a 72-year old woman greeted us with such sincere gratitude. This woman was a widow, and her daughter had passed away to years ago from cancer.

She lived and worked at an orphanage, and had cataracts in both eyes, unable to see. Another worker at the orphanage told her about the Visualiza program and how it offered free surgery to those who could not afford it.

Two months before we arrived, she was able to get surgery for both cataracts. When she heard that our team would be coming for a visit, she insisted on coming back to the clinic to thank us in person when we arrived.”

30 miles may not seem like much, but when it’s a 2300-foot climb that snakes it’s way through numerous rivers, breathtaking highlands and rocky roads, the journey is often a perilous one. Our Giving Partner, Seva Foundation, regularly makes treks like these through Nepal to bring professional eye care to some of the most remote villages in the world.

Efficient, Responsible Giving: To make sure each mobile eye camp expedition helps as many as possible, news of their arrival is broadcast on local FM radio news during the weeks prior. Students, teachers and local volunteers also distribute pamphlets in their villages. Community leaders are contacted by Seva Foundation for assistance in spreading the message.

The Results of One Expedition:Over the course of three days, the eye camp conducted a total of 443 examinations and 93 surgeries. There were no complications during surgeries or in the post-operative period.

We are currently giving sight in 11 countries: Nepal, Tibet, Cambodia, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Paraguay, Guatemala, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United States. Adventures like these happen all over the world, made possible by our customers.

Performing a commonly needed operation, such as cataract surgery. (Cataract is a clouding of the

eye’s lens and a leading cause of blindess in the world).

Medical Treatment

Treating sight-threatening conditions (injury, infection and disease) with prescription medications, removal

of foreign objects, clinical attention and education.
