Wedding catcher: There is a wedding tradition in some countries in which the bride throws her bouquet of flowers and the single female guests try to catch it. It is said that the catcher of the bouquet will be next to marry. Not so for Jamie Jackson of Utah (US). Amazingly, she has managed to catch 46 bouquets in nearly 20 years of attending the weddings of family members and friends. However, she’s still single and loving it. Now, attending weddings and positioning herself to catch the bouquet has because like a sport to her. Obviously, it’s a myth that the bouquet catcher will marry next, but that doesn’t take the fun away for Jackson! Bottle house: Most people build their houses out of bricks or wood, but not Hamidullah Ilchibaev of Chelyabinsk, Russia. He constructed a home made out of champagne bottles – 12,000 of them! Ilchibaev either purchased the bottles or collected them from restaurants. It was necessary to use a glass cutter to make each bottle the same size, then he layered them like bricks, using a special material between them to keep them in place. From the outside, an onlooker can see the bottoms of the bottles all along the walls of the house. Tourists often stop to take a look at the house, which is known as “Palace Oz.” Parking problem: The Masters, a major professional golf tournament, takes place in the city of Augusta, Georgia (US), every April. So many people descend upon the city that parking becomes a problem, especially at the airport. The tournament takes place over a seven-day period, and many spectators, along with some of the golfers themselves, arrive via private jet. There can be as many as 3,000 takeoffs and landings of these privately owned airplanes during the week of the event. To accommodate all of this extra traffic, airport officials close a couple of the taxi- ways and use them as parking lots for the visiting aircraft. Floating home: A secluded cove off the coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia (CAN), is home to a couple and their two children. Wayne Adams and Catherine King made their own floating home that they named “Freedom Cove.” This is no ordinary houseboat. Rather, it is an array of small buildings on a series of floating platforms. There are greenhouses, gardens, living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. There is solar-powered electricity, while collected rainwater and a nearby waterfall are available for drinking water. The couple have lived there for over two decades and they enjoy having visitors who want to come and learn about their lifestyle. Quoteable Quotes Trivia 1. What islands, off the coast of Ecuador, are known for giant tortoises that are the world’s oldest living animals? 2. Holden Caulfield is the hero of what novel by American author J.D. Salinger? 3. Linseed oil comes from what plant? 4. Nazi Gestapo chief Adolf Eichmann was arrested how many years after World War II ended? 5. The “Suan-Ching” (“Ten Classics”) were 7th-century Chinese textbooks of history, language, or science? Quoteable Quotes “The really frightening thing about middle age is the knowledge that you'll grow out of it.” - Doris Day, actress “A good manager is a man who isn't worried about his own career but rather the careers of those who work for him.” - Henry S.
