Using the TomTom GO 500The TomTom GO 500 can be mounted to your windshield by means of a plastic dock

whose ball knob allows the driver to adjust the angle of the display. Due to the dock’s

magnetic connector, the device can easily be removed from or placed back into the dock.

The GO 500′s 5-inch capacitive touchscreen is highly responsive to user input and

responds to commands at a noticeably faster speed than previous TomTom models.

Spoken driving instructions, which now include street names, are delivered through a

built-in speaker on the back of the device. The volume is sufficient that directions can be

heard loudly and clearly.

The GO 500 sports TomTom’s new map-centric interface represents another advance

over previous TomTom models, on which the interface centered on a series of menus

from which the user could select a destination or point of interest. On TomTom’s new

interface, all of the GO 500′s features revolve around the main map window. Users can

use the GO 500′s pinch zoom feature to zoom in and out on the main map, and can

navigate to any destination on the map by long-pressing it and then pressing the steering

wheel icon that appears. TomTomÕs selection of maps is comprehensive and highly

accurate, although map accuracy may vary slightly from location to location. The GO 500

also comes with free map updates up to four times a year, which is more than sufficient

to provide the driver with up-to-date information.

For users who want to manually search for their destination instead, the search function

is accessible through the main menu in the bottom left corner of the screen. The search

function updates results as the user types and displays search results in two columns,

with addresses on the left and points of interest on the right. The upside of this approach

is that it displays all relevant search results in a single window. This represents another

improvement over previous generations of TomTom’s, which have required that

addresses and points of interest be searched separately. This two-column display does

restrict the amount of information that can be displayed to the first 17 characters of each

place name, but fortunately, the user can easily switch to the main map view where he or

she can access more detailed information for each destination.

Once a location has been selected, the TomTom GO 500 not only guides the driver to his

or her destination, it also provides a wealth of relevant information along the way without

overwhelming the user. TomTomÕs advanced lane guidance system directs the driver

into specific lanes as he or she navigates complex intersections, and the right side of the

screen displays a route bar, which shows the driver’s current location plus information

about what lies on the road ahead, including live traffic and speed camera updates.
