WELCOME‘no one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark’ Warsan Shire

Audiences who joined us last term to see the NT live production of Hamlet, would have heard Benedict Cumberbatch read the poem above in full as he drew attention to the Syrian migrant crisis, and thus it is hugely timely that our main junior production this term is an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s famous novel, The Grapes of Wrath which details the mass migration from the ‘Dust Bowl’ of Oklahoma to the greener fields of California in the 1930s. It promises to be an excellent show which is well complemented by other pieces of drama this season, including the critically acclaimed Hangmen by Martin McDonagh, Arthur Miller’s classic play, A View from the Bridge, and The Audience, all of which are coming once again to the EM Forster Theatre courtesy of NT Live. Exciting new talent will be live on stage with Abi Zsakarian’s play, Fabric and the EM Forster theatre is continuing to develop its reputation for children’s drama with the acclaimed pieces Fly Away Katie, The Day it Rained in Colours and The Curious Adventures of Pinocchio all coming this season; they are sure to keep our younger audiences entertained and delighted in equal measure.

Following on from the outstanding end of term concert in the chapel when the school orchestra and choir performed Fauré’s Requiem and Shostakovich’s Symphony No.5, our musical offerings take on a different flavour with the Alan Bunney concert showcasing the guitar talents of Marin Kolarides and Matt Ridley. Earlier in term, the Jazz and acoustic evening in Big School promises to be the perfect way to relax on a Friday evening. The Lower school concert at the end of term complements the school’s focus on its younger talents seen in the Junior Play. There are many visual delights to behold as well in the exhibitions put on by the DT department and the Art department where the senior school Artists have the chance to display the fruits of their labours pleasing with this year’s leavers’ exhibition You say Goodbye and I say Hello, the Lower Sixth’s Can You Tell what it is yet? following the GCSE They Think it’s All Over exhibition in early May.

If that is not enough to convince you, then please do come and see ‘the new poster boy for British comedy magic’, Pete Firman, who will be here on 9th June as we look to bring one of the brightest new talents to Tonbridge; it promises to be an excellent show and hopefully the first of many. This programme is jam-packed with exciting talent and once again we are confident that there is something here for everyone. We look forward to welcoming you.

HANGMEN NT ENCORE

Following a sell-out run at London’s Royal Court Theatre, Olivier and Academy Award® winner Martin McDonagh (The Pillowman, The Cripple of Inishmaan, In Bruges) returns to the West End with Matthew Dunster’s award-winning production of his deeply funny new play Hangmen.

In his small pub in the northern English town of Oldham, Harry (David Morrissey – The Walking Dead, State of Play) is something of a local celebrity. But what’s the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve abolished hanging?

Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman – Peaky Blinders, Death at a Funeral) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn – Clouds of Sils Maria) lurk with very different motives for their visit.

A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE NT ENCORE

Following its smash-hit original broadcast, the Young Vic’s ‘magnetic, electrifying, astonishingly bold’ production of A View from the Bridge returns to cinemas due to audience demand.

This stunning production of Miller’s tragic masterpiece won a trio of 2014 Olivier Awards including Best Revival, Best Actor for Mark Strong (The Imitation Game; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) and Best Director for Ivo van Hove.

The great Arthur Miller confronts the American dream in this dark and passionate tale. In Brooklyn, longshoreman Eddie Carbone welcomes his Sicilian cousins to the land of freedom. But when one of them falls for his beautiful niece, they discover that freedom comes at a price. Eddie’s jealous mistrust exposes a deep, unspeakable secret – one that drives him to commit the ultimate betrayal.

JUNIOR PLAY

THE GRAPES OF WRATHAdapted by Frank Galati Based on the novel by John Steinbeck This amateur production is presented by arrangment with Josef Weinberger Limited

The Grapes Of Wrath, by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck, is a hugely relevant story about the endurance of the human spirit in the face of economic and social exploitation during America’s Great Depression.

Driven from their home, the Joad family join thousands of other migrants on the route westward to find a new life in California. Seduced by the prospect of work on fruit farms and the promise of a dignified life in the Sunshine State, the family risk everything on the dangerous expedition.

With a 40-strong cast and an epic set that centres around a 1929 Hudson Super 6 jalopy, this is a timely production about human resilience in the face of adversity.

THE MISERMolière’s ever popular satirical masterpiece is a hilarious look at obsession. FABRICA new play by Abi Zakarian Directed by Tom O’Brien Set & Costume Design by Alyson Cummins Produced by Robin Rayner in association with The Marlowe Theatre Canterbury

Leah is sorting through all the stuff that has accumulated in her spare room: clothes she doesn’t wear, books she doesn’t read, things she doesn’t need. Constantly reliving events in her past; she desperately tries to unpick just where it all went wrong and who is really to blame.

A raw, poignant, and unflinching look at the unravelling of one woman’s life, FABRIC questions the shifting roles and expectations of women in todays society and asks how, if ever, they can be fulfilled.
