Why Donate Through your financial assistance you can help our team of volunteers carryout much needed work at this poor rural primary school. 100% of your donation through RAWCS (refer section how to donate) is tax deductible and will be used entirely on building materials and teaching aids. All the volunteers pay their own costs of travel, accommodation, food & and out of pocket expenses.

Lapaha GPS - Background & Outcome: Lapaha Primary School has approximately 340 students, in a poor area on the west side of Tonga’s main island. Jerra Rotary has been working with the Rotary Club of Nuku’alofa at the school for the past three years and this year’s trip will be the 3rd Phase of work, ensuring that our support is ongoing and the work that we do is sustainable.

Phase 1: Matching Grant – 2012/13

In 2013 Jerra Rotary received a matching Grant to provide upgrading of sanitation and clean water supply, the project has been managed by both the Rotary Club of Nuku’alofa Tonga D9920 (Host Club) and the Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra D9710 Australia (International Partner). These works were completed by a local contractor, with quality control oversight by Rotary.

Phase 2: RAWCS Jerra input 2014

In 2014 Jerra Rotary took 15 volunteers to Tonga from 22nd September returning 7th October. During the 15 day trip the volunteer team carried out renovations on the original school block that had not received much attention, other than a lick of point, since it was built. The main works carried out where:

• Replacement of all the window louvre mechanisms in the main block (six classrooms and the Principals office, and replacement of broken glazed louvers;

• Repaired and/or replaced broken doors and locks; • Stripped, primed and painted all window frames and doors; • Repaired classroom backboards: • Installed security mesh to the veranda side of the classrooms; • Rewired and replaced light fittings in class rooms, Principals office and toilets; and • Pigeon proofed all the rooms.

The below table shows some before and after photos of the works:

Phase 3: RAWCS Jerra input 2015

The club is again heading over to Tonga and taking a new group of15 volunteers. We will be in country from 21st September returning 6th October this year, to carry out more needed work to the original school building and one of the other classroom blocks, this year we have a 2 tiered objective. Building works by our volunteers & teaching resources for the teachers.

A snapshot of the works and resources for which we are seeking assistance in funding are set out in the below dot points:

Building works in Tonga • Finish the security mesh to the other side of the original building; • Ceiling in the original block class rooms, extent governed by available funds; • Security mesh the second school building (pending available funds); • Pigeon proof 2nd building; • Tiling at least 1 or 2 rooms and office; • Fencing – perimeter fence; and • Build bookshelves.

We have also been requested by the Principal to bring over teachers aids and school equipment such as the below list, all maintenance and school resources for teaching must be provided by the local community, unlike in Australia, we are looking to take as much as weight and funds will allow of the below list:

• Science equipment’s e.g test tubes etc; • Creative tech: kitchen equipment; • Tent for the school activities; • Hose for watering garden and vegetables; • Art materials e.g brushes different sizes, textiles ink different colours; • Sports equipment’s e.g uniforms for the rugby, soccer and netball; • Equipment for students playground e.g swing etc; • Computers; • Projector.

Everything in Tonga must be shipped in, thus making the most basic (paper pencils, paint etc) items expensive for a poor community. Any assistance in donations is greatly appreciated and will be well used. On behalf of our 2015 team we thank you for considering, and if able to sponsoring, this year’s works. Kind regards YIRS Rob Chilman International Director Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra +61 2 412 024 228 [email protected]
