Tonga Water Purification Project• Introduction

– Access to clean drinking water is a major challenge to most developing nations and according to UNICEF, every day, worldwide 4,500 children die because they lack access to clean water

– GNF and its Kenyan partner organisation OSIENALA (Friends of Lake Victoria) have constructed a drinking water treatment plant to the 1,000 boys and girls of Tonga Secondary School

Tonga Water Purification Project• The water purification plant

– Technology by SilverSan and Buderus of Germany

– Solar plant by SolarWorld of Germany

– Transport by Lufthansa & financial grant from Ursula Merz foundation

– It was installed as a model/demonstration drinking water treatment plant from January 2009, the equipment supplies clean water for two schools with a total of 1,000 pupils (Tonga Girls Secondary School and Tonga Boys Secondary School).

– Water supply is tapped by gravity from streams flowing from the surrounding hills

– Water is polluted through human waste and animal grazing from the surrounding fields.

– Frequent outbreak of water borne diseases such as diarrhoea

– Water Treatment plant in constructed in Suba District Nyanza Province

Tonga Water Purification Project• Plant

– The daily output of the drinking water treatment system is about 1,000 litres. The equipment comprises a pump unit as well as an additional storage tank in which the water is conserved by use of SilverSan technology.

– The water is filtered, sterilized and thanks silver ions added to the water conserved for the long term.

– Then the purified water is being pumped into a closed tank, thus avoiding bacterial growth.
