As individuals, in con- necting with ourselves we live more in alignment with what’s truly important to us. In con- necting with others, our lives are enriched, we enjoy beauty and fun together, and we support one another in difficult times. In coming together as communities, we celebrate the human family, and work together while sustaining one another on our path to create a better world. Yet it seems that being disconnected from ourselves and others, is also part of the human condition, reflected in the many challenges that humanity faces. So much gets in the way of real human connection – busyness, distractions, minds thinking at a rate of knots, fear of the unknown and, ironically, fear of being rejected. Our speaker tonight Justine Bonney hopes to kindle your desire for greater connection with yourself and others. You will see how the practice of mindfulness can cultivate deeper con- nection in your life. The evening will include a short, optional exploration of where your life feels rich and rewarding, and where you would like to grow. Justine works with people who want to go beyond a life that’s “good”, to create a life that they love. You can reach Justine on 0418 238 193, or through wholelifesuccess.com.au. WOOPI REUNION RAISING MONEY FOR WOOLGOOLGA ROTARY! The big Woopi Reunion is on 10 June (Saturday evening) at Woolgoolga C.ex auditorium. Organiser Maria Yianni and team are using the event to raise funds for Woolgoolga Rotary! The buffet dinner ($40 pp) includes a donation to Rotary with each ticket sold. In addition, Bob Weeks has donated two framed photo collages for the Reunion organisers to raffle. They will be available for sale at June Rotary auction before 1pm & at the Reunion. Thirdly, we will be selling copies of the Yeates book [see next article], which not only will raise further funds for Rotary but makes available a local history that will be valued and ap- preciated by its purchasers and their descendents in future generations. Hot off the press on 17 May, 7 books are already with their proud new owners, while 15 have been paid for, with others in the pipeline. Altogether, orders total 56 and they are mounting fast. If you or anyone you know wants one, contact David Fayle [email protected] or 0401 022 951 (only $30/copy). The only comprehensive history of Woolgoolga, the book was out of print for 17 years before our 2013 edition commemorating the Wool- goolga Heritage Walk, the 125th anniversary of the gazettal of Woolgoolga as a village, and the club’s own 25th anniversary. The new 17-page Addenda section cor- rects and extends the original on four significant topics (including revealing the purple fruit from which Wool- goolga gets its name, with photo – so long a mystery), and there are four pages of colour plates, and numerous other images, including this fascinating old 1874 map, & the photo of the Pullen sugar mill, only in this edition. The then 25-year history of our club is also outlined. Secretary: PaƩy Delaney 0429 449 385 APOLOGIES TO: Echah 0418 861 253 6654 2557 by 9am Monday 20 22 MAY 2017

SWAP PARTY COMING UP (Sat 27 May) Don’t forget the Swap Party at Karen Sedgwick’s coming up very soon– Sat 27 May. Details in the advert at left.

DONATION NEWS – END TRACHOMA NOW Unchecked, trachoma can cause blindness. Trachoma disappeared from mainstream Australia over 100 years ago with improved hygiene facilities, water infrastructure and living conditions. Yet Australia is the solitary developed country, among over 50 developing countries, where trachoma still exists as a public health issue. In some areas, 4–5% of indigenous children aged from 5 to 9 years old have active trachoma infection. End Trachoma Now, initiated by the Rotary Club of Melbourne but aim-ing to involve clubs Australia-wide, aims to end this avoidable blindness by 2021, less than 3 years’ time. Our donation of $200 will help. Soap Aid will also help. REPORT (8 MAY) UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY – GARRY KENNEDY Garry Kennedy’s talk was a feast for the eyes, as you will see from the photos© on a specially added page 3. His (expensive!) photo equipment was a revelation!

ROTARY DISTRICT ASSEMBLY, KEMPSEY, 30 APRIL At the District Assembly, with Kim, Patty, Pam F & David F gained valuable infor-

mation from sessions tailored to their upcoming roles (Treasurer, Secretary, President & International), as well as sessions covering many other areas. These assemblies are highly recommended, particularly for newer Rotarians – inspiration, knowledge, & networking.

BOWELSCAN BOWS OUT, AS THE GOVERNMENT TAKES UP THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER Bowelscan organizer David Edwards says: “My thanks to everyone that has helped this widely respected Rotary initiative over the years. As you know, this was the last BowelScan that our Rotary District is running, and while our sales in Woolgoolga have declined, this is explained by the fact that the new Government free bowel scan policy is taking over as planned. For those who are not yet covered by the government programme there are similar kits (albeit $40 each) available over the counter at pharmacies. Please spread the word that the balance of our kits are on sale at our local Advantage Pharmacy (formerly Am-cal) until the end of this month for $15.” Thank you David for organizing this in recent years, and to John Mitchell, Dick, Karina, Pam S, Mary, Patty, Norm, Karen, David F and Rod for selling kits, and Trish for looking after money, kits and equipment. OMISSIONS FROM THANK YOU LISTS Inadvertently missing from the donor list for the auction vehicle was John Mitchell ($100), and Dennes Fayle was the unattributed donor of $500. John was also missing from the Whisper’s list of helpers loading the truck for Mur-willumbah, though the District eNews has corrected our omission. We do our best, but inevitably miss a few when thanking people for their help.
