Wrangler Cross Country Season!

Coach Ewing and Coach Haught have been busy training our cross country runners for the 2017 season. These dedicated coaches and students have been up with the sun and ready to run in the cooler morning hours. They have had some evening runs, as well. Tonto Basin will be hosting the next meet at Green Valley Park on Thursday, September 7 at 3:30 p.m. Come out and support our Wrangler runners!

Health Alert! It is in the best interest of Tonto Basin School if we can have all of our students here at school every day. However, on occasion, students do become ill and need to either stay home or be picked up from school. If your child is vomiting and/or has a fever, we ask that you give them time to be well before returning to school so we can limit the spread of illnesses. Students must not have vomited and need to be fever free for 24 hours before joining their classmates. They also must check in at the front office upon their return.

We consider a child to have a fever if his/her temperature is 100 degrees or greater.

Remember, flu season is just around the corner, and frequent handwashing is the best prevention!

We do welcome any and all donations of tissue, hand sanitizer, antibiotic wipes, etc.

Thank you!

Tonto Basin K-8 students will be taking a field trip on Friday, September 8 to the Northern Gila County Fair in Payson. Classes have worked on some different projects to enter into the school exhibit, including arts and crafts and creative writing.

Our students will be able to see livestock, view the many different exhibits, go to the petting zoo, and watch some of the arena events.

We are looking forward to a fun-filled day!

The officers and representatives of the TBS Student Council have been elected and are hard at work already. Our big project this year is to design and create an outdoor learning area for students and teachers to utilize. The goal is to create an environment that is student friendly while having areas that are focused on science, art, math and writing standards. Student Council will be purchasing two trees and wood for picnic tables. The picnic tables will be assembled and painted by the end of September as well as the trees being planted. Ideas are flowing and more will follow. TBS student council is also going to make an effort to find ways to reach out to the community and give back to show appreciation. President – Ashton Lugo

Vice President – Kayla Cline

Secretary – Buster Taylor

Treasurer – Denny Joe Haught

The 7th and 8th grade students have been working to design their own Pop-Up Books while learning about the Scientific Engineering Design Process. The students read Scholastic’s ScienceWorld (Sept. 4, 2017, Vol. 74. No. 1) article, “Pop-Up Book Designer,” featuring an interview with Matthew Reinhart, a master at designing the paper attention grabbers found in pop-up books. After selecting children’s books at the Tonto Basin Library, the students began practicing with various pop-up creations to gain an understanding of the basic stand-out book models. Next, the students used the Engineering Design Process to create the plan that they followed to create a pop-up version of the library book they selected. This method of design differs from the Scientific Inquiry model of investigation as the end result is a prototype of the design. The prototype is then tested to determine what adjustments can be made to improve the design and future working models. The Engineering Design Process:

1. Identify the problem. 2. What are the design criteria? 3. What are the design constraints? 4. Design a solution to your problem. 5. How can you test your design?

Kaitie’s Closet

Kaitie’s Closet is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing clothing for needy children in our area. It was begun by Jack and Barbara Gooch in 2010 in honor of their granddaughter, Kaitie.

Currently, clothing distributions take place on the last Wednesday of each month, except June and December, from 4 to 5 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 401 E Tyler Parkway, in Payson.

Collection bins are found at each of the administrative offices in the 4 Payson schools, Scoops, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Items may be delivered to St. Paul’s M-W from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Monetary donations made out to Kaitie’s Closet are very welcome, as new socks, shoes, and underwear must be purchased.

Children must accompany parents when getting clothes.

Coats will be out for distribution.

The things in our schools that truly count cannot be counted. You can’t put a number on character, a rating on a teacher’s passion, or a rank on a kid’s excitement.
