Supplies needed for set of two towels:

2

•Stabilize toweling fabric (or purchased towels) with spray starch or a starch alternative and press with iron.•Cut the towel fabric horizontally into two equal pieces, creating two 1 yard or 36” [91cm] long towels.

(Note: If using purchased towels, prewash them and skip the cutting and hemming stps below. Begin with the measuring step.)•Hem the long edges of the towel fabric, if needed. Press under ½” twice along each long edge and edgestitch using

matching thread.•Hem one short end of towel fabric by pressing under ½” twice and edgestitching using matching thread.

•Measure and write down the width of the remaining unfinished short end of one towel. (If using a purchased towel, measure one narrow end of the towel.) Add 1” to that measurement for the final band length.•Cut off selvage edges from the band fabrics.

•From narrow band fabric, cut 2 fabric bands 1½” wide by the noted final band length.•From wide band fabric, cut 2 fabric bands 3¼” wide by the noted final band length.•Position long edges of one narrow band and one wide band right side together. Pin, and stitch ¼” from the pinned edge.

•Press flat, and then open.

•Repeat for 2nd pair of fabric bands.

2. Attach band to the towel edge.

•Mark the center along the unfinished edge (or narrow finished end) of the towel with a pin.•Mark the center along one long edge of the fabric band with a pin.

•Meet right side of fabric band to the wrong side of towel, matching pins and aligning cut edges. Pin together. •Stitch ¼” from the pinned edge. Press flat.

•Fold under the band ends so they are even with the sides of the towel; press.•Press under a ¼” hem along the unattached long edge of the band; press.

•Press the band over the seam allowance. Turn towel right side up; press.•Match folds of band ends to the towel sides and pin in place. Pin the pressed upper edge of the band to the towel.•Edgestitch along all four edges of the band, catching the towel in the stitching.

•Repeat for second towel.

3. Prepare towel and template.

•Lay towel flat, right side up, on work surface with the fabric band at the bottom.•Fold the towel in half vertically, smooth out folds and finger press to temporarily mark the vertical center line.•Open the towel to lay flat again, and with an erasable fabric pen or marker and ruler mark the vertical center line.

5

•Using translucent foundation paper, print one template of the design of your choice. Note: Although you can use conventional printer paper to print templates, using Translucent Foundation Paper will allow you to see through the paper making it easier to align the design.•Trim away excess paper around stitch field.•Position template over towel aligning the vertical center line of the template over the vertical center line of the towel. Adjust the

template up and down to achieve the desired placement above the towel band—we positioned the bottom of the design 1” above the fabric band.•Tape template in place with Sewer’s Fix-It Tape along all four edges. Note: The low tack adhesive of Sewer’s Fix-It Tape allows the

tape to be removed easily without leaving adhesive residue on your fabric.

4. Hoop towel and embroider designs.

•Cut self-adhesive tear-away stabilizer large enough to fit your embroidery hoop and hoop release liner side up. Score and peel away release liner exposing adhesive.

•Secure the towel over the stabilizer aligning the vertical and horizontal lines of the template with the center markings of the hoop.

•Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for setting up your machine for computerized embroidery and import the design of your choice.•Attach hoop to the embroidery machine, and position the needle directly over the center of the template crosshair marking.•Remove template along with tape.•Embroider the designs following the color chart included with the design CD, or select your own thread colors; trim jump stitches

between color changes.•Remove towel from stabilizer and erase fabric pen or marker lines. •Repeat the process for remaining towel.
