LIBERTY SIDE ONE

MAD ABOUT THE BOY

TOMBOY

WE'LL BE TOGETHER AGAIN | HADN’T ANYONE ‘TILL YOU MIDNIGHT SUN

ALEXANDER THE GREAT!!!

Jazz fans from coast to coast are saying just that about Tommy Alexander and his exciting, swinging aggregation. Com- posed of a group of truly fine young mu-

-sicians, the Tommy Alexander Band is one of the fastest rising new names on the dance band horizon. In a few short years, Alexander’s fresh approach to dance music has stamped him as an in- novator of note. By combining the best aspects of progressive jazz with an easy, danceable rhythm, Tommy Alexander has created a unique style. . . a new sound, readily identifiable with a great swinging beat which dancers or listeners find hard to resist. The “Alexander Sound” features four trombones and two baritone saxo- phones in unison, one octave below the lead trombone. Big, full brass ensemble effects are neatly offset by tenor and alto sax riffs, usually by Bill Trujillo or Lanny Morgan, while trombone solos feature Dave Wells, a mainstay of the Harry James’ bands of a few years back. These outstanding instrumentalists form the nucleus of the hard-driving Alexander band which got a running start up the ladder of success with it’s first recording, “Was That The Human Thing To Do”. The collection of standards and originals in ALEXANDER THE GREAT is the re- sult of many one-night stands and cross-country tours by the Tommy Alex- ander Band. The selections included in this album were among the most-requested numbers “in the book” and are sure to become your favorites too, before many “spins” have been made.

Here is the line-up of tunes.

MAD ABOUT THE BOY opens the album with a dramatic, moving jazz arrange- ment which features Dave Wells on the bass trumpet. Dave’s interpetation of the

old favorite is a simple one, but the drive and imagination displayed shows the mark of a great instrumentalist.

TOMBOY is an original written and ar- ranged by Bill Holman, former Kenton luminary, which showcases the distinctive “Alexander Sound”. Bill Trujillo is fea- tured on tenor and provides some fancy solos on this smooth-riding “swinger”.

WE’LL BE TOGETHER AGAIN is.an easy . bounce instrumental of the old Frankie Laine standard and features the alto sax artistry of Lanny Morgan. Lanny’s re- laxed, stylized choruses leaves the impres- sion that his is a name to remember..... a definite jazz star of tomorrow.

I HADN’T ANYONE TILL YOU is an- other Holman arrangement which rides and rocks from start to finish. Tenor man John Bambridge finds the right jazz groove and the big swinging Alexander band is with him all the way.

MIDNIGHT SUN, first introduced by Lionel Hampton as an instrumental and later identified as a June Christy vocal trademark, gets another classic treatment by Dave Wells. His superb job of trom- boning proves once and for all... “Mid- night Sun” can be played on the instru-— ment! !!

LULLABY OF BIRDLAND, at one time or another and/or in one language or an- other, has been featured by artists, both vocal and instrumental, but never with better results. The fine, swinging brass ensemble, so consistently characterized by © the “Alexander Sound’, combines with the

- solo improvisations of lead alto man Dick Paladino and trombonist Dave Wells to really. blow up a collective storm.

OLD DEVIL MOON and IT COULD HAP- PEN TO YOU features the excellent solo work of Bobby Stiles. Bobby picks up the beat unhesitatingly and unleashes some tasty improvising which leaves the listen- er with but one thought... MORE! MORE!

THE SONG IS YOU features the freely effervescent trombone soloing of Dave Wells. A real swinger!

ALL THE THE THINGS YOU ARE has the irrepressible Lanny Morgan giving the Kern-Hammerstein evergreen his inimi- table treatment with the solid backing of

' the entire Alexander aggregation. Listen to this number ... see if you don’t agree it has all the characteristics of a jazz classic.

FLAMINGO is a very pretty arrangement of a beautiful ballad. The “Alexander. sound” with the full brass figures is woven around the solo trumpet of Bobby Stiles. A truly “Stiles-ized” listening treat.
