Since 1905, doctrine, the undamental principlesbehind Soldiers actions, has ocially been a parto overall Army strategy. In the past 107 years,

it has changed to match the way the Army ought asAmerica battled in two world wars, Korea, Vietnam, theCold War, Iraq and Aghanistan.

Starting last December and going through 2015,the Army is seeking to simpliy the complex world oArmy doctrine. In Doctrine Update 1-12, released inDecember by the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center

at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the Army is striving to giveleaders a better understanding o the Armys undamen-tal principles, simpliy eld manuals and allow moreand better eedback rom the eld on how doctrineimpacts the squad, platoon or company.

Te new doctrinal publications are structured hi-erarchically to provide Soldiers with a broad overviewo the Armys undamental guiding principles whenimplemented through tactics and procedures. Alreadybeing written, Army Doctrine Publications are set to

cover the overarching principles o how the Army doesbusiness. Tese 15 manuals areshort reads no more than 15pages that all leaders need tobe amiliar with, said CommandSgt. Maj. Christopher Greca,

    commandsergeantmajor othe Com-bined ArmsCenter.

NCOs need to be amiliar with are the Army DoctrinReerence Publications, which dive deeper into theprinciples o ADPs and explain the reasoning behindthe Armys undamentals.

Its really a hierarchy structure in terms o how youdrive your inormation, Greca said. Not every [publication] is necessarily applicable to all. All leaders needto be grounded in the ADPs. However, depending upoyour MOS or career eld, youre going to need to deepdive a little bit urther and extract a little more inormtion, depending on what your job is.

Simpifing FMsPreviously, 550 Army eld manuals were available,

covering topics as varied as how to write a memo andhow to operate a tank. o simpliy that, the Army isconsolidating them to 50 eld manuals, Greca said.

Tere was so much inormation that was owingout there potentially inormation overload thatwe needed to make it simpler and streamline it, Grecasaid. Aer the past 10 years o war, weve been askingour leaders to do a lot our noncommissioned oceto do a lot in terms o showing exibility out there tthe eld. What were ormerly airly prescriptive ways o

doing business, internal to FMs, we took a look at thatsystem, and through Army Doctrinal Publications, inthose 15 manuals, were going to talk about the way thArmy should do business undamentally in accordancwith our principles. Tat gives our leaders a lot o lati-tude in terms o operating within those parameters.

Te 50 FMs will ocus on tactics and procedures ththe Army uses to train and conduct operations, and thare consistent with the principles ound in the ADPsand ADRPs. Extra inormation will go into trainingcirculars and technical manuals, Greca said.

Ms deal with those shoot, move and communi-cate pieces and [specications o] equipment, Greca

said. Tey certainly sustain and maintain the orce inormation. But a lot o those Ms are just applicable toa generator mechanic or a mechanic in those particulacareer elds.

    A iving, breathing doment

NCOs will be asked to give their eedback ondoctrine through online resources, including milWikiGreca said. MilWiki is an online collaboration availabto discuss ways o conducting Army business.
