    1 SCOPE

    1.1

    This EURONORM covers the grades of wrought steellisted in Tables 2 to 5 namely :(a) unalloyed cold-work tool steels (see Table 2);(b) alloyed cold-work tool steels (see Table 3);(c) alloyed hot-work tool steels (see Table 4);(d) high-speed tool steels (see Table 5).

    Unless otherwise stated, this EURONORM applies to atypes of hot-rolled, forged or cold-drawn products whicare to be supplied in one of the surface and heat-treatmeconditions given in clause 3.3.

    3 REQUIREMENTS

    3.1 Information to be supplied with enquiry andorder

    The corresponding paragraphs of EURONORM 21 areapplicable.The following information in particular shall be given inthe enquiry and order :

    (a) The shape, surface condition and the dimensions of tproduct (see clauses 3.3 and 3.8).

    (b) The type of steel (see Tables 2 to 5) as well as the heatreated condition (see clause 3.3).

    (c) The requirement class (see Table 1) and if called fothe kind of documentation required (see clause 4.5).

    3.2 Production process

    Unless otherwise agreed in the order, the steelmaking process used shall be at the discretion of the manufacturer; itshall, however, be reported to the purchaser on request.Unless dictated by the shape of the product, the processfor working the material shall be at the manufacturer's

    discretion.

    3.6 Mechanical properties

    3.6.1When ordered to the requirement classes 2 or 3, themaximum Brinell hardness values given in Tables 2 to 5apply for the delivery condition of steels ordered in theannealed condition.

    3.3 Condition of delivery

    The condition of delivery shall be agreed at the time of theenquiry or order.Usual surface conditions are : the hot-rolled or forged condition; the machined (ground, polished, turned, planed or mil

    led) condition; the cold-reduced condition.

    The usual heat-treatment condition is annealed. Individually manufactured blocks for moulds and discs are sometimes delivered in the hardened and tempered condition.

    3.4 Requirement classes (')The steels covered by this EURONORM shall be orderedand delivered to one of the requirement classes given inTable 1.

    3.5 Chemical composition

    3.5.1

    The chemical composition as expressed by the cast analysis shall conform to that given in Tables 2 to 5.

    3.5.2

    If ordered to the requirement classes 1 or 2 (see Table 1)the permissible deviations given in Tables 2a, 3a, 4a, and5a between the limiting values specified in Tables 2, 3, 4and 5 and the analysis of products up to 160 mm diameter

    or equivalent dimensions shall apply.If necessary, the permissible deviations for larger productsshall be agreed at the time of the enquiry or order.

    3.5.3

    If ordered to the requirement class 3, for which theminimum Rockwell C hardness values are the acceptancecriteria, the cast analysis may deviate slightly from thelimiting values given in Tables 2 to 5.

    3.6.2

    When ordered to the requirement class 3 the minimumRockwell C hardened values given in Tables 2 to 5 applyfor hardening test-pieces prepared in accordance withclause 4.2.3.

    3.6.3

    In Figures 1 to 4 the hardness/tempering temperaturecurves of the steels are reproduced for guidance.

    Note:

    The hardness/tempering temperature-curve for a givensteel type can vary to a noticeable extent depending on thechemical composition of the cast or of the test-piece, andthe hardening and tempering conditions. Consequently thecurves in Figures 1 to 4 which were derived from the testresults from different sources can at present give only arough idea of the tempering behaviour of the steels.

    The curves may, with the above reservations, be used fortest-pieces, which were tempered with the temperingtemperature in question, but which otherwise were prepared according to the conditions for the hardening test(see clause 4.2.3). When using the curves to estimate thehardness to be expected with hardened and temperedtools, it should be taken into account that the optimumheat-treatment conditions for tools are not necessarilyidentical to those specified for the test-pieces and particularly that the suggested heating times in clause 4.2.3 maynot be right for thicker tools.

    (') In earlier EURONORMS, the term 'type of condition of delivery' wasused. It was replaced by 'requirement class' in order to avoid confusionwith the term 'delivery condition' which is often used for the treatmentcondition of the steel at the time of delivery.

    3.7 Surface quality

    3.7.1

    All products shall have a surface finish compatible withthe production process used and be free from surfaceimperfections which could impair significantly their subsequent processing or serviceability.

    3.7.2

    Ground, polished or finished machined products shall befree from surface defects and decarburization.

    3.7.3

    Hot-rolled, forged, cold-drawn or rough-machined products shall be delivered with a machining allowance suffi-

    cient for the removal of decarburization and surfacedefects from all surfaces by machining or grinding.

    3.7.3.1

    In the case of hot-rolled, cold-drawn or hot-forgedrounds, hexagons and octagons, unless otherwise agreedat the time of the order, the values given in Table 6 shallapply for the minimum machining allowances per side forthe removal of surface decarburization and surface imperfections.

    3.7.3.2

    For products other than the bars mentioned in clause3.7.3.1, for bar shapes and dimensions not included in theTable and for rough-machined products, the minimummachining allowances are to be agreed at the time of thenquiry or order.

    3.8 Dimensions and tolerancesThe dimensions and tolerances for tool steels are to beagreed at the time of the enquiry or order as long as nospecial EURONORMS for them are available.

    4 TESTING

    4.1 Number of samples 4.2 Sampling

    4.1.1 Chemical composition

    If agreed at the time of the inquiry or order, the castanalysis shall be reported by the manufacturer. If a product analysis is called for by the order, at least one sampleshall be taken per cast.

    4.2.1

    For product analyses the millings shall be taken uniformlyover the entire cross-section of the product. If this isimpracticable, the millings shall be taken from a suitablposition representing the whole cross-section.

    4.1.2 Mechanical properties 4.2.2

    4.1.2.1

    For material supplied to the requirement classes 2 r 3 ofTable 1 with a guaranteed maximum Brinell hardness inthe annealed condition, one sample shall be taken fromeach cast, from each heat-treatment batch and from eachsize.If there is only a small difference in thickness of the different sizes (thickness ratio 1.5) the separation of the products into batches according to their dimensions can beomitted.

    If the product is heat treated in a continuous furnace, onesample shall be taken per 10 t, but at least one sampleshall be taken from each cast and from each size range.

    4.1.2.2

    For products supplied to the requirement class 3 of Table1, with a guaranteed minimum Rockwell C hardness, on areference test-piece, one sample shall be taken per cast.

    4.1.3 Surface quality

    If the purchaser requires the surface quality to be tested,

    then the number of samples to be taken shall be agreed atthe time of the enquiry or order.

    For the Brinell hardness test the surface of the sample orof a test-piece taken from the sample in the delivery condtion shall be prepared in accordance with the requirementof EURONORM 3.

    4.2.3

    For the hardening test one test-piece shall be cut off fromthe sample as indicated in Figure 5. The test-pieces shalbe hardened and tempered under the conditions given inTables 2 to 5, precautions being taken to avoid decarburization.The total heating time in a salt bath (soaking time) shalbe:

    If the test-pieces are not heated in a salt-bath, the heatingtime must be extended accordingly.The cut surface shall be prepared in accordance withEURONORM 4 for the Rockwell C hardness test.

    4.2.4

    If the purchaser asks for a test of the surface quality, thedetails for sampling and for the preparation of the test-pieces shall be agreed at the time of the enquiry or order.

    4.2.5

    General requirements for the selection and preparation oftest-pieces shall be in accordance with EURONORM 18.

    4.3 Test methods

    4.3.1In cases of dispute, the methods for chemic l n lysis shallbe those laid down in the relevant EURON ORM S. Whereno EURONORMS are available for determining the alloycontent of a steel then the methods may be agreed between the manufacturer and the user.

    4.3.2

    The Brinell hardness test shall be carried out in accordance with EURONORM 3.

    4.3.3

    The Rockwell C hardness test shall be carried out inaccordance with EURONORM 4.

    4.3.4

    If the purchaser asks for the surface quality to be tested,the test method shall be agreed at the time of the enquiryor order.

    4.4 Retests

    For retests the appropriate paragraphs of EURONORMS21 shall apply.

    4.5 Documents

    The appropriate paragraphs of EURONORMS 21 areapplicable for documentation.
