INTRODUCTION

What is National School Breakfast Week (NSBW)?National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) was launched in 1989 to raiseawareness about the availability of the School Breakfast Program (SBP). Each year, SNA helps you celebrate this important week with a fun theme. This year we invite kids to experience ‘A World of School Breakfasts’.

The goals of NSBW are to share several important messages with students, parents and the media:

The SBP is available at your school, it meets dietary guidelines and, best of all; it is a tasty and fun way to start the school day!

There is an established link between eating breakfast and academic success.

Eating a nutritious breakfast can help kids maintain a healthy weight. In today’s climate of heightened awareness around childhood obesity, this is a great benefit to offer kids.

What is “A World of School Breakfasts”?The ‘A World of School Breakfasts’theme is an opportunity forAmerica’s children to have funwhile learning about the benefits of eating School Breakfast. A World of School Breakfasts is a chance for fun-filled cafeteria promotions and sampling of international breakfast foods, allgiving students an insight to whatkids around the world have forbreakfast.

Everybody likes to have a useful fact or two up their sleeve, so take a look at these…and use them as you reach out to parents, school officials and the media about theimportance of school breakfast in a child’s day.

• The School Breakfast Program (SBP) started as apilot project in 1966 and became a permanentprogram in 1975.

• SBP is a federally funded, locally delivered nutrition program, similar to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

• SBP provides a nutritious breakfast to more than 9.3 million children each school day.

• For fiscal year 2006, Congress appropriated $2.07 billion for the SBP.

• USDA requires school breakfast have 25% of theRDA for protein, calcium, iron, vitamins A and Cand calories as well as meet the Dietary Guidelinesfor Americans.

• 80% of the schools that participate in the NationalSchool Lunch Program participate in the SchoolBreakfast Program. A decade ago, only half of allschools participated in the Breakfast Program.

• Students are more alert and perform better inclass when they eat breakfast. A study completedby the state of Minnesota found that students whoate breakfast before starting school had a generalincrease in math grades and reading scores, increased attention levels, reduced school nursevisits and improved behavior.1

A WORLD OF. . .

BREAK-FACTS

Made possible by:

• Innovative approaches to serving breakfast includeserving it in the classroom, in ‘grab and go’ bags inthe halls or even serving it on the school bus.

• Parents find that school breakfast is a great solutionto hectic mornings and children who are too groggy in the morning to eat before school.

• No super-sizing here. The meals served as part ofthe SBP are provided in age-appropriate servingsizes — making schools one of the only places inthe United States where you can purchase a mealwith the recommended serving sizes.
