HEATERS & SAW BLADES

HEATING AND BENDING TIPS: Test scrap pieces first in order to get timing correct. Flipping the material you’re bending a couple of times while heating will make for a more even bend. Use a simple kitchen timer for repeating the same bend. Heat until material is soft enough to bend without applying excessive pressure. Heating too long will bubble the material. For best results, set up a jig in advance to hold your project in place while it cools.

For best results, assemble parts to be glued in their final position, then use the applicator to apply a thin line of solvent cement along the edge where the parts meet. The cement will run into the joint and bond evenly and invisibly.

The oval squeeze bottle is the most popular tool for applying solvent cement. BUFFING / POLISHING

flaMe PolisHing tiPs: Many fabricators prefer this fast, economical method of edge finishing. done correctly, this process gives an excellent polished finish, whether using the water torch or conventional torch system with gas tanks and regulators. Flame polishing should never be done on edges before they are to be cemented, formed or painted, because they may crack or craze. use plastic cleaner only after flame polishing, not before. using a torch may take a little practice; move the flame along the edge at about 3-4" per second. going too slowly will cause the edge to melt, distort, or burn. going too quickly won't give a high polish.

BUffing tiPs: Prepare surface to be buffed by scraping, sanding, or skimming (router or joiner) to remove saw marks. Always apply buffing compound to the wheel, not the piece being buffed. keep work or buffing wheel (if hand-held) in constant motion to prevent material overheating. use minimal pressure. To clean buffing wheel: hold the edge of a file or hacksaw blade against the wheel as it revolves to remove old dry compound. Wheels can be stacked for wider working area.

roUting tiPs: A step up from the simple table router system, a pin-router will increase productivity and safety. These machines have an overhanging arm with a pin that fits into your template or pattern. A vacuum system holds your template to the work piece. depressing the foot pedal brings the router up from below the table and the pin down into the template. You then simply follow the pattern with the pin in the groove of your template. You can also set up the pin router with a fence to allow “skimming” of your straight edges to remove saw-cut marks and roughness prior to gluing or polishing.

roUting tiPs: The #28 series carbide router bits are ideal for routing plastics using templates. using a vacuum pump attached with a hose to your pre-made template, you can quickly rout out any shape. The template should have a rubber gasket so that the vacuum holds it down on your work piece. Mount the router under a work table with the bit sticking up through the table. The ball bearing on the top of the router bit will follow along the template to cut out your shape. To cut a stack, use double-stick tape to hold pieces together. (See Page 12 for tape.) The ball bearing bits are also used to rout off excess material and produce even corners on boxes, bins, and cases. Just assemble your project with a slight overhang and use the bit to rout an even edge.
