“Curriculum mapping is not a spectator sport. It demands teachers’ ongoing preparation and active participation. There must also be continual support from administrators who have a clear understanding and insight into the intricacies of the mapping process.“
-Janet Hale (2008)
A systematic approach to curriculum development is essential
• Ensures continuity of instruction within a school and among schools
• Ensures progressive skill development among schools through continuity of instruction
• Maximizes the use of student time, avoid unnecessary instructional overlaps, prevents gaps, and thereby minimize boredom and ensure mastery of curriculum
• Provides a strong barrier against the problem of concentrating on one school or level of schools at the expense of the total system
Roadmap to Mapping
• Conduct gap analysis
• Prioritize big shifts
• Prioritize standards (Power Standards)
• Deconstruct standards
• Combine current maps with new plans
• Ensure understanding
• Complete vertical and horizontal alignment
• Analyze using reports for refinement

Roadmap to Mapping
Conduct Gap Analysis
Identify what content is new, what
content has been removed from the
grade level, and content that is the
same (but may be at a deeper rigor).
