PRINCIPAL NEWS The last fortnight, like the first three weeks of term, have been very busy and I got a bit of a shock when I sat down to write this and realised that this weekend is the mid point of Term 3. Here’s a snapshot of some of the more exciting and interesting things that we’ve been up at Toora in the past couple of weeks: Swimming Kerry, Emma, Shannon, Deb and I spent Tuesday working with Kathy from Kemp Aquatics in preparation for our upcoming swimming program. Kerry (a qualified swim instructor) organised this day for us to refresh our skills and learn some new teaching tips and strategies. Kerry and I will now sit down to map out the program – more information will be in the newsletter before the end of term. Student Voice Students have a very unique and interesting take on teaching, school and education, and it is really important that we take that into account. This last fortnight I have been working with the students to get their perspective on Toora Primary School and how we can make improvements in the classroom, in the yard and in the program. This has been really productive and insightful work which has resulted in a some great ideas, and has already resulted in the oval being available for students to use again during lunch breaks. Book Fair and Book Week Dress Up Day The Book Fair is well underway in the library and which the students are all very excited about. As always, there is a wide variety of books to suit readers of all ability levels and interests along with some great activity books and novelty items. The book fair will be open each day before and after school until next Wednesday, 23rd August and is open to all members of the community. Please feel free to spread the word! We will culminate the end of the Book Fair next Wednesday with a Book Week dress up and parade. I still haven’t got my costume sorted so if anyone has any ideas of what they’d like to see me dressed up as please let me know! And just one reminder to finish off: Parent Opinion Survey Information was sent out last week in regards to the Parent Opinion Survey, if you haven’t already done so could you please take a moment and fill it in – thanks! Have a great weekend. Mr H.
PARENT OPINION SURVEY The survey link has been sent by letter to all families. Please take the time to complete the survey.
PREP 2018 INFORMATION: Our Kindergarten to Prep transition program is well underway with visits from the kinder to school and vice versa. School information sessions will take place in Term 4 for Kindergarten students - when Enrolment Packs etc will be distributed. If you know of families who are interested in the school, at any grade level, please encourage them to phone the school on 56862 283 to arrange an individual tour or pop into the school to collect a 2018 enrolment form and to leave their contact details.
Term 3 Kindergarten/School Transition Dates:
Monday 21/8,10am - School Kids to Kinder Thursday 7/9, 10am - Kinder Kids to School Tuesday 19/9, 10am - Kinder kids to School
BOOK CHARACTER PARADE We will be celebrating Book Week with a Book Character Parade on Wednesday 23rd August. This is always a fun and memorable time for the
students (and parents and staff) so please feel free to meet us in the Project Space at 9:00am. Students are asked to arrive at school dressed as a book character and bring the book along. Some helpful hints for costumes:
Your favourite book character of all time Google Book Character Parade costumes Go through your bookshelves for ideas Class stories and novels Find a costume at home then find the book Involve the whole family in generating ideas
HEAD LICE ARE BACK In the past week there have been several reports, by parents, to the school of the prevalence of head lice. We urge all parents to be proactive in regularly checking and where necessary, treating their children’s hair. We also ask that parents notify the school office, so that a generic note can be sent home with students from the same grade.
The school will be conducting a whole school inspection within the next few weeks to try to eradicate this problem. If your child is found to have lice or eggs during the check, we will make a phone call home and you will be required to collect your child and treat accordingly. For those parents unsure of what to look for, or how to treat head lice, information is available from the school office.
Do you know of any pre-school aged children who
are thinking of coming to Toora PS in 2018.? Get them to pop in and meet Luke and see what an awesome school we have here!
P12 Classroom News This week I have commenced my 3 week block of teaching (14/08 – 01/9) and have really enjoyed being in the classroom each day. This is a brief snapshot of what we have been learning about, exploring and investigating so far this week - Writing – the students are continuing their study of poetry. On Monday they were given a poem entitled “Raindrops, Raindrops” to fit in with both our long a sound for show and tell and the science unit (weather) we will begin on Friday. Students are enjoying performing the poem in class and are in the process of creating their own “Raindrops” poem. Integrated Studies – Students are focusing on the past and the present and will be investigating everything from family history to comparing the ways that people used to live (with a main focus on toys and transport). This week they have been working on their family trees. Mathematics – we have been focusing on fact families and number patterns.
Group work – Maths investigation Fact families Wanted – does anyone have any spare cardboard boxes, such as shoe boxes that we could use for our time capsules? If so could you please bring in to the school, thanks to those children who have already brought some in. Finally, we would like to welcome back Mrs Gilbertson, we can’t wait to hear all of your fabulous holiday stories! - Ms. Haughie
Next week our sound focus is on long e sound as in ee, ea, y, ie and ey combinations. Examples - seed, meal, bunny, piece, donkey. Start thinking about Show and Tell ideas!
