    Toothbrush Research

    This research project is a great opportunity for us to learn about the different inds oftoothbrushes by trying them out individually! "s per the re#uirement, $ started using each

    toothbrush on the %ednesday evening and continued it until the follo&ing &ee's %ednesday

    morning! $ used the disclosing solution prior to brushing at the beginning of the &ee on

    %ednesday evening to note do&n the pre(brush biofilm score and compared it to the score $

    &ould get at the end of the &ee on follo&ing %ednesday! Post(brush score &as used as a pre(

     brush score for the ne)t brush! *aving used different inds of toothbrushes, $ am no& more

    a&are of the different inds of toothbrushes available in the maret and their applications!

    +irst, $ used the olgate plus toothbrush! -y first impression of the toothbrush by visual

    inspection &as that the bristles &ere thicer compared to the one $ had been using for past fe&

    years! .ver the period of a &ee, $ noted that it &as discomforting at times due to the thicnessof the bristles! $t &as harder to clean the teeth in the posterior segments &ith this toothbrush! $

    also felt irritation over the gingival margins! -y pre(brush score &as less than 10/ and my post(

     brush score &as more than 10/ for this toothbrush! -ainly, the biofilm &as hard to remove from

    the posterior teeth &ith the use of this toothbrush!

    econd, $ used the .ral ensitive toothbrush! This toothbrush had combination of normal

    thicness and superthin bristles! ue to the thinner bristles, $ noted that it &as easy to clean the

    teeth at the gingival margin compared to the olgate plug toothbrush! y the end of the &ee, $

    also noted that gingival inflammation had significantly reduced! "dditionally, this toothbrush

    &as easy to maneuver in the mouth and &as easy to reach the posterior teeth &ithout much

    discomfort! -y pre(brush score &as higher than 10/ and my post(brush score &as less than 10/

    for this toothbrush!

    Third, $ used the olgate e)tra clean(soft toothbrush! This toothbrush had uni#ue pattern in that

    the bristles &ere of different lengths! %ith bristles of different lengths, it &as very efficient in

    clearing the interpro)imal surfaces of the anterior and posterior teeth! "dditionally, this

    toothbrush &as just as good at cleaning the teeth surfaces adjacent to the gingival margin! $ did

    not note &orsening of the gingival inflammation over the &ee, neither did $ note increase in

    tooth sensitivity! -y pre(brush and post(brush score remained less than 10/!

    +ourth, $ used the ensodyne Precision toothbrush! This toothbrush had significantly softer

     bristles &ith rounded end compared to the previous toothbrushes! ristles &ere very gentle onthe soft tissue attachments on the teeth! "gain, gingival inflammation and interpro)imal pla#ue

    deposits did not &orsen over the &ee! -y pre(brush score &as less than 10/ and my post(brush

    score &as less than 3/!

    +ifth, $ used the .ral ross "ction toothbrush! .n visual inspection, $ noted that this

    toothbrush had bristles angled at 415(degrees from the head and &ere criss(cross in nature! "lso,

    the tip of the toothbrush had set of bristles that &ere longer in lengths compared to the others!

    This toothbrush &as gentle on the enamel and gums! $ did not see rise of any gingival

    inflammation throughout my mouth! "dditionally, interpro)imal surfaces looed bit more

    cleaner! -y pre(brush score &as less than 3/ and my post(brush score &as less than /!

    i)th, $ used the .ral pro health soft toothbrush! "s the name implies, this toothbrush had very

    soft and fle)ed bristles, &hich &ere gentle on the gingiva and able to clean all the surfaces of theteeth! 6everse side of the head had te)turi7ed surface, &hich &as effectively used to clean the

    tongue and chee follo&ing brushing! This additional benefit significantly improves oral health

    in patients &ho are suffering from halitosis! -y pre(brush score &as less than / and my post(

     brush score &as less than 8/ follo&ing the use of this toothbrush!

    eventh, $ used .ral Professional mechanical toothbrush! $ have been using this toothbrush for 

     past 29 years! ristles on this toothbrush are soft and of different lengths! The head of the

    toothbrush is round in shape and much smaller in si7e compared to the manual toothbrushes!

    maller head made it easier for me to maneuver the toothbrush in my mouth &ithout any

    discomfort! $ &as able to clean the hard to reach teeth surfaces such as lingual surfaces of

    mandibular posterior teeth &ith ease! This toothbrush has oscillating and rotating bristles thatseemed to be removing pla#ue #uicer than other toothbrushes! "dditionally, the toothbrush has

    rubbery elongated bristles that are used to reach the interpro)imal surfaces! -inimal to no

    gingival inflammation &as noted at the end of the &ee! -y pre(brush score &as less than 8/

    and my post(brush score &as less than 2/!

    :ighth, $ used the -entadent Pro(care soft full head toothbrush! $t &as difficult to locate this

    toothbrush in the local shopping store! This toothbrush came &ith bigger head compared to the

    other toothbrushes and so it &as difficult to use this toothbrush to clean the posterior teeth! $ felt

    as if $ &as not able to clean the lingual surfaces of ma)illary and mandibular posterior dentition

    effectively! "dditionally, bristles felt more firmer and so $ felt pain over the gingival margins

    earlier in the &ee! -y pre(brush score &as less than 2/ and my post(brush score &as less than8/ at the end of the &ee!

     Ninth, $ used 6each toothbrush firm full head as my hard brush! This brush came &ith very hard

     bristles that &ere not fle)ible &ith digital manipulation! .ver the &ee, $ noted that my gums

    &ere becoming more sensitive and tender &ith the use of this toothbrush! ;ingival inflammation

    &orsened over the &ee as &ell in addition to the pla#ue deposits over the interpro)imal

    surfaces! $t &as progressively discomforting throughout the &ee! -y pre(brush score &as less

    than 8/ and my post(brush score &as less than 8/ as &ell!

    "s mentioned above, my original toothbrush is .ral Professional mechanical toothbrush,

    &hich $ have been using for past 29 years! $ have been very happy &ith this toothbrush and havemaintained my oral health at its best!

    $n conclusion, $ &ould recommend my patients to get mechanical toothbrush if finances are not

    of any concern to them! $n recent times, toothbrushes have taen toll on patient's finances as

    many different inds of mechanical toothbrushes are available! $f patient is limited by the

    finances, $ &ould highly recommend .ral pro health soft toothbrush as it is easily available

    and affordable! "dditionally, it significantly helps reducing gingival inflammation to a healthy

    level! -aintenance of oral health should be of utmost priority and performing basic oral care

    using a toothbrush should be on top of the list!
