PRIMARY SCHOOL UNIFORM GUIDELINES 1 PURPOSE

This policy outlines in detail the Uniform Policy, dress code and how the uniform is to be worn by Primary School students enrolled at Toowoomba Christian College.

2 CONDITION OF ENROLMENT

It is a condition of enrolment at Toowoomba Christian College that each student will adhere to the school’s Uniform Policy and that parents will support and uphold these standards.

3 FINAL ARBITER

The Principal will be the final arbiter of the interpretation and application of the School’s Uniform Policy. 4 RATIONALE

The Primary School Uniform is a central aspect of College life and plays an important part in a student’s development. It helps to create a sense of belonging and unity and assists each student to develop a sense of pride in their own personal appearance and in their school as a whole. Our uniform identifies students with the College and therefore students are expected not only to wear the correct items but to also wear them in such a way that brings credit to themselves and the school. Adherence to a dress code is a requirement in many workplaces. The school seeks to help train students in this regard. It is not acceptable at Toowoomba Christian College for any student to be making a ‘fashion statement’ with the way they wear their uniform or in their appearance. The following rules should be seen as house rules rather than moral laws. The wearing of the uniform as outlined in this document should be seen in this light.

5 SUMMER AND WINTER UNIFORMS

In Term 1, students are required to wear full summer uniform. In Term 2, students may wear either full summer uniform or full winter uniform until the end of Week 3. After that date, all students are required to wear full winter uniform until Week 7 in Term 3, when they may wear either full winter uniform or full summer uniform until the end of the term. In Term 4, students are required to wear full summer uniform.

6 INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW THE UNIFORM IS TO BE WORN

The school uniform is to be clean, ironed where appropriate, and in good condition. Any uniform item that is faded or the worse for wear will need to be replaced. Frayed jumper cuffs need to be fixed or the jumper replaced. It is expected that all students will wear their uniform in the correct manner while travelling to and from school on public transport and in public places. It is expected that when a student enters or exists the school on any school day that they are fully dressed in the appropriate uniform, including hat. Prep students are required to wear their school hat to and from school including to and from the car park and their classroom. During break times and sport lessons they wear the yellow hat which is provided by the school and remains at school. While at school it is compulsory for students to wear the appropriate hat whenever they are outside of a classroom, including during outdoor activities. When the uniform policy requires a tie to be worn, the top button is to be fastened and the tie is to be worn up to the top button. All formal shirts are to be worn tucked in. During break times, if students’ shirts become untucked due to playing games then they need to make sure that they tuck them in again before entering class for the next lesson. Long sleeve shirts are to be worn down to the wrist and buttoned up. Students are allowed to roll up their sleeves to play handball during break but they need to be rolled down and buttoned up again before entering class for the next lesson.

PRIMARY SCHOOL UNIFORM GUIDELINES (Continued) School shoes are expected to be kept clean and polished. For this to happen shoes need to be polished at least once a week. When students choose to wear a jumper, they are not to pull the sleeves up. If it is too hot to have the jumper down to the wrists, then the jumper should be removed. Long socks should be securely held up. Sock colours and lengths are to be in accordance with the Uniform Guide. If students wish to wear an additional shirt or singlet underneath either their formal shirt or sports shirt, this additional item is not to be visible this includes any text or logo on the additional item of clothing). When wearing the summer uniform, male students are to wear their socks pulled up. The heels on girls’ shoes are to be no higher than 3 cm. ‘Baby Doll’ shoes (shoes that have a single strap across the top of the foot) are not appropriate for school. Girls’ summer uniform should fully cover the knee and touch the floor when the student kneels. Girls winter uniforms/tunic are to be mid calf. Girls should not modify the length of the dress or the position of it through temporary means.

7 SPORTS UNIFORM

Parents are asked to purchase sports shoes for their students which provide adequate protection, support and stability for students’ feet and ankles during sporting activities. These shoes must be lace-up shoes with adequate grip. These shoes (and shoelaces) are able to be a bright colour, if so desired. Students competing in interschool sport must wear the correct sports uniform, or forfeit their place in the team. Students are not to wear visible leggings, skins or bike pants with their sports uniform. Please note that the following types of shoes are not appropriate for sport:

- Basketball boots - Skate shoes - Slip-on shoes - Shoes covered in pictures or text

The College reserves the right to make the final decision on whether a student’s sports shoes are appropriate for school or not. If in doubt, parents and students are encouraged to take a photograph of the pair of shoes and discuss with the Enrolments Officer before purchasing.

Students in Years Two – Six may wear their sports uniform to and from school on Fridays as this is their sports afternoon. Students are also able to wear their PE uniforms to and from school on the day that they have their PE lesson. Students may wear their school jumper with their sports uniform. Students may wear either the formal hat or TCC Bucket Hat while playing sport. This includes Physical Education lessons, Interschool Sport and Carnivals. The bucket hat will not replace the wearing of the formal hat at all other times. Sport House Polo Shirts Students participating in Physical Education classes or social sporting activities onsite at the College will have the option of wearing either the Sport House polo shirt or the TCC Sports shirt. Students representing the College in an interschool sporting competition must wear the TCC Sports shirt (for example: participating in interschool netball or competing at a Range Zone carnival). If they wear their Sport House polo shirt they will not be allowed to participate at interschool sport or the sporting competition. While students participating in House Competitions and Carnivals are welcome to accessorise using their house colour, they are required to wear their Sport House polo shirt with their school sports shorts or school tracksuit pants.

PRIMARY SCHOOL UNIFORM GUIDELINES (Continued) Students in Prep and Year One who wear their sports uniform as their official uniform all week are allowed to wear their Sport House polo shirt on their Physical Education day and on a Friday, as this is the sport day in Primary.

8 WINTER WEATHER If students need additional layers of clothing during the winter months, only the regulation uniform is to be visible. A plain navy blue or black scarf may be worn, provided that it is worn with a jumper. When there is a cold snap, students in the Primary School may wear their sports tracksuit jacket with their formal uniform, including their school jumper. The sports tracksuit jacket, however, is not to be worn with the formal uniform in place of the school jumper. Students may also wear black or navy gloves on these days. However, beanies and blankets are not permitted.

On these days, classrooms will be made available to students before school and during the breaks to keep students out of the cold.

9 JEWELLERY All students are permitted to wear a watch. In addition to this, female students are permitted to wear one earring in the lobe of each ear. These earrings are to be plain and small. They are to be either silver or gold studs or sleepers. Stones (clear or coloured), pearls, hoops etc are not acceptable. Students are not permitted to wear any other visible studs, stones or sleepers. Boys are not permitted to wear an earring. Rings, bracelets, necklaces and arm bands are not permitted. Inappropriate jewellery is likely to be confiscated.

Examples of the only Earrings that can be worn:

Small plain silver or gold stud silver or gold sleepers

10 MAKE-UP Primary School students are not permitted to wear makeup to school.

11 FAKE TANS Fake tans are not permitted. Students are not permitted to apply products to their skin to produce a fake tan.

12 PIERCINGS AND TATTOOS Body piercing and tattoos are not permitted, whether permanent or temporary.

13 WRITING OR DRAWING ON THE BODY Students are not to write / draw on their body or other students.

14 HAIR Hair is to be kept neat and tidy in a style appropriate to the standards of the school. The Principal will be the final arbiter of these standards. Students are not to use any product to alter the natural colour of their hair. Tinted, bleached, streaked or foiled hair is not acceptable. This includes the use of products advertised as lasting only 6 washes, as these usually take to porous hair and are difficult to rinse out.

It is not possible to cover every hair style or fashion. Therefore, before a student wishes to wear their hair in a style that makes a fashion statement, they are required to ask the Head of Primary or Enrolments Officer if the intended style would be appropriate to the standards of the school. The Principal will be the final arbiter of these standards.

14.1 Male Students’ Hair Hair is to be kept trimmed, brushed and arranged neatly. Unkempt hair is not permitted. Hairstyles must be cut above the shirt collar at the back and must be shape cut around the ears. At the front, a fringe must not reach the eyebrows. If hair is touching the collar or eyebrows or covering the ears, then a haircut is required. Haircuts are not to be shorter than ‘a number 3’ on the back, sides and on top. A ‘shaved head’ look is not acceptable.

As a result, boys hair must not be excessively layered, and the contrast between the shorter layer around the lower part, and the longer upper part must be kept to a minimum and blended progressively without a sudden change. 14.2 Female Students’ Hair

Hair is to be kept off the face. Hair that is shoulder-length or longer must be tied back. Hairstyles need to accommodate the wearing of their hat.

Hair accessories are to be plain and navy, black, brown or white in colour. Thin elasticised headbands may be worn. Students are reminded that no ‘fashion statement’ is to be made with the way they wear their hair.

15 EXCURSIONS Students are required to wear the appropriate uniform, as stated in the relevant excursion letter, and to be dressed in accordance with this policy. Failure to do so is likely to result in the cancellation of the excursion for that particular student.

16 FREE DRESS In school activities where free dress is permitted, students are to choose clothing that: • Is modest, • Is appropriate to the activity being undertaken, • Follows any guidelines included in the Information Letter for that activity, • Is sun smart, and; • Does not contain adverse slogans.

Girls are not to wear low-cut shirts, strappy singlets or clothes designed to show the midriff. Skirts and dresses should be of modest length and fit. Boys are to wear T-shirts in preference to singlets.

17 LOST PROPERTY

Parents are asked to ensure that all items of clothing are clearly named so that lost uniforms can be identified and returned to student. Lost property is stored at Primary Reception. Parents and students are encouraged to check this throughout the year. At the end of each term, unclaimed lost property will be donated to a charity.

18 PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE OUT OF UNIFORM

It is expected that all students will be correctly dressed in their school uniform every day. Students who are not wearing their uniform in accordance with the guidelines outlined in this policy should have a written note from a parent to present to their class teacher at the start of school or an email to the teacher from their parent. Students who are not wearing their uniform in accordance with the guidelines outlined in this policy, and who have not informed the school, will be spoken to by their classroom teacher about why they are not wearing their uniform correctly. Students who are wearing their uniform incorrectly will be issued an Out of Uniform Notice. This notice will be sent and/or emailed home and is to be signed by parents and returned to school. This notice is to assist in the communication between school and home, and to make parents aware that their child has been spoken to about a uniform issue. As we value sun safety, students who do not have their hat at school will be required to stay in the shade during break times. Students who forget their hat and are not repeat offenders can be issued a ‘hat pass’ for break times but are still required to play in the shade of the undercover area. Repeat offenders who consistently ‘forget’ to wear their hat to school will not be allowed to play and will sit outside the Primary Reception area in the shade. If a student chooses not to abide by the school’s Uniform Policy then their enrolment in the school is likely to be reviewed.

19 CHANGES TO THIS POLICY The school reserves the right to modify and adjust this policy as it sees the need. We are aware that we live in a society where fashions change regularly and in unexpected directions. Therefore the school will need to review this document in light of new products or fashions or the like.

22 CONDITION OF ENROLMENT

It is a condition of enrolment in Toowoomba Christian College that each student will adhere to the school’s Uniform Policy and that parents will support and uphold these standards.

The High School Uniform is a central aspect of school life and plays an important part in a student’s development. It helps to create a sense of belonging and unity and assists each student to develop a sense of pride in their own personal appearance and in the school as a whole. Our uniform identifies students with the school and therefore, students are expected not only to wear the correct items, but to also wear them in such a way that brings credit to themselves and the school. Adherence to a dress code is a requirement in many workplaces. The school seeks to help train students in this regard. It is not acceptable at Toowoomba Christian College for any student to be making a ‘fashion statement’ with the way they wear their uniform or in their appearance. The school realises that for many students the high school years can be a difficult time as values and outlooks on life are formed. Some students face an increasing pressure from peers to be accepted by what they do, how they look and what they wear. For these reasons the school wants to take the pressure off young people to feel that they must have the latest fashion design or statement or colour in their hair to be accepted by other students and hence has a strict dress code and will uphold the requirements of this policy. The school wants each High School student to know as they grow into adulthood that their Creator has fearfully and wonderfully made them and that He accepts them just as they are. The school wants the students to know that they do not have to give in to the pressure to wear the latest gear, or have a certain colour in their hair to be accepted by others. The following rules should be seen as house rules rather than moral laws. The wearing of the uniform as outlined in this document should also be seen in this light.

It is expected that when a student enters the school on any school day that they are fully dressed in the appropriate uniform, including their hat.

SECONDARY SCHOOL UNIFORM GUIDELINES (Continued) It is expected that when students leave the school in the afternoon that they are fully dressed in the appropriate uniform, including their hat. While at school it is compulsory for students to wear their hat whenever they are outside of a classroom. Students are to wear their hat to and from class and to and from school. The formal hat, sports cap and bucket hat are to be worn in an appropriate manner to provide shade to the face. Students are to wear their formal hat with their formal uniform, and not their sports cap or bucket hat. The only exception to this is students who are dressed in their formal uniform and who are playing a sport on the bottom ovals during lunch time, they are able to wear their sports cap or bucket hat instead of their formal hat. All students are to be in full school uniform to participate in any formal school function or assembly. When the uniform policy requires a tie to be worn, the top button is to be fastened and the tie is to be worn up to the top button. All formal shirts are to be worn tucked in, except for the Senior High girls’ summer blouse. Long sleeve shirts are to be worn down to the wrist and buttoned up. When students choose to wear a jumper, they are not to pull the sleeves up. If it is too hot to have the jumper down to the wrists, then the jumper should be removed. School shoes are expected to be kept clean and polished. Senior High students are to arrive at school wearing their blazer. Senior High students are to have their blazer at school every day, except Wednesday. Senior High students are to wear their blazers to Chapels and Assemblies. If students wish to wear an additional shirt or singlet underneath their formal shirt or sports shirt, this additional item is not to be visible (this includes any text or logo on the additional item of clothing).

When wearing the summer uniform, male students are to wear their socks pulled up. The heels on girls’ shoes are to be no higher than 3 cm. ‘Baby Doll’ Shoes with a single strap across the top of the foot are not appropriate. Girls’ summer uniforms are to touch the floor when a student kneels. Girls’ winter skirts are to be worn no shorter than half-way between the knees and ankles as they are designed to keep female students warm during winter. Girls should not modify the length of the skirt or the position of it through temporary means (i.e. folding at the top to shorten a skirt). Students are reminded that it is not appropriate to make a ‘fashion statement’ with their appearance while in school uniform.

27 SPORTS UNIFORM Due to High School sport being held on Wednesdays, students may wear their sports uniform to and from school. If students have practical lessons in the Woodwork Room, Science Lab or Function Centre on their allocated sport day, students must bring their leather school shoes to wear during the lesson.

SECONDARY SCHOOL UNIFORM GUIDELINES (Continued) Teachers of students who are participating in the subjects of Physical Education or Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation will tell students which lessons they need their sports uniform for. On these days, students are to wear their formal uniform to school and use the change rooms in the Indoor Sports Centre to change into their sports uniform at the start of their lesson or, if instructed by their teacher, during a break time. At the end of their Physical Education or Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation class, students are to get changed back into their formal uniform and report to their teacher in their correct uniform, before being allowed to go to their next class. The only exception to this is when the Physical Education or Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation practical class is during period 7. In this case, students are permitted to travel home in their sports uniform. Students competing in interschool sport must wear the correct sports uniform, or forfeit their place in the team. Students attending interschool athletics carnivals or sports carnivals are to be dressed in their tracksuit including their sports hat. Students are not to wear visible leggings or the like with their sports uniform.

Parents are asked to purchase sports shoes for their students which provide adequate protection, support and stability for students’ feet and ankles during sporting activities. These shoes must be lace-up shoes with adequate grip. These shoes (and shoelaces) are able to be a bright colour, if so desired. Please note that the following types of shoes are not appropriate for sport: - Basketball boots - Skate shoes - Slip-on shoes - Shoes covered in pictures or text

The College reserves the right to make the final decision on whether a student’s sports shoes are appropriate for school or not. If in doubt, parents and students are encouraged to take a photograph of the pair of shoes and discuss with the Enrolment Officer before purchasing. Students may wear their school jumper with their sports uniform. Students are to wear their sports hat with their sports uniform, and not their formal hat. Year Twelve students are permitted to wear their optional Year Twelve Jersey with their sports uniform. Sport House Polo Shirts Students participating in Physical Education classes or social sporting activities onsite at the College will have the option of wearing either the Sport House polo shirt or the TCC Sports shirt. Students representing the College in an interschool sporting competition must wear the TCC Sports shirt (for example: participating in interschool netball or competing at a Range Zone carnival). If they wear their Sport House polo shirt they will not be allowed to participate at interschool sport or the sporting competition. While students participating in House Competitions and Carnivals are welcome to accessorise using their house colour, they are required to wear their Sport House polo shirt with their school sports shorts or school tracksuit pants.

28 WINTER WEATHER If students need additional layers of clothing during the winter months, only the regulation uniform is to be visible. A plain navy blue or black scarf may be worn, provided that it is worn with a jumper.

29 COLD SNAPS

When there is a cold snap, students in Years 7 – 10 may wear their sports tracksuit jacket with their formal uniform, including their school jumper. The sports tracksuit jacket, however, is not to be worn with the formal uniform in place of the school jumper. Students may also wear black or navy gloves on these days. However, beanies and blankets are not permitted.

30 HAIR Hair is to be kept neat and tidy in a style appropriate to the standards of the school. The Principal will be the final arbiter of these standards. Students are not to use any product to alter the natural colour of their hair. Tinted, bleached, streaked or foiled hair is not acceptable. This includes the use of products advertised as lasting only 6 washes, as these usually take to porous hair and are difficult to rinse out. Students who enrol in school with coloured hair are not to unilaterally decide to re-colour their hair as it grows out. If they are concerned about their regrowth, they are to come to High School Student Reception, where they will be directed to a staff member who can work with them and their parents or carers to determine the best course of action to take. Any unilateral action taken by the family to solve a hair issue could be referred to the Principal and may lead to the student’s place in the school being in jeopardy. 30.1 Male Students’ Hair

Hair is to be kept trimmed, brushed and arranged neatly. Unkempt hair is not permitted. Hairstyles must be cut above the shirt collar at the back and must be shape cut around the ears. At the front, a fringe must not reach the eyebrows. If hair is touching the collar or eyebrows or covering the ears, then a haircut is required. Haircuts are not to be shorter than ‘a number 3’ on the back, sides and on top. A ‘shaved head’ look is not acceptable. All hair styles are to be appropriate for the school environment. As a result, boys’ hair must not be excessively layered, and the contrast between the shorter layer around the lower part, and the longer upper part must be kept to a minimum and blended progressively without a sudden change. Older male students are to be clean shaven. Sideburns are not to extend below the ear lobe.

30.2 Female Students’ Hair Hair is to be kept off the face. High School girls whose hair is shoulder-length or longer must have it tied back. Hairstyles need to accommodate the wearing of their hat.

Hair accessories are to be plain and navy, black, brown or white colour. Thin elasticised headbands may be worn. Students are reminded that no ‘fashion statement’ is to be made with the way they wear their hair.

31 JEWELLERY All students are permitted to wear a watch. In addition to this, female students are permitted to wear one earring in the lobe of each ear. These earrings are to be plain and small. They are to be either silver or gold studs or sleepers. Stones (clear or coloured), pearls, hoops etc are not acceptable. Students are not permitted to wear any other visible studs, stones or sleepers. Boys are not permitted to wear an earring. Rings, bracelets, necklaces and arm bands are not permitted. Inappropriate jewellery is likely to be confiscated.

32 MAKE-UP Female high school students may wear minimal foundation, tinted moisturiser, clear nail polish and clear lip gloss to school. Students wearing these products inappropriately will be asked to remove them. Other makeup products, including mascara, eyeliner, blush, coloured lip gloss, coloured fingernail polish, French polish or false fingernails are not permitted.

33 FAKE TANS Fake tans are not permitted. Students are not permitted to apply products to their skin to produce a fake tan.

34 PIERCINGS AND TATTOOS

Body piercing and tattoos are not permitted. 35 WRITING OR DRAWING ON THE BODY

Students are not to write / draw on their body or other students.

36 STUDENTS GOING OFF-SITE Students attending TAFE or University courses are to find out from the school what the dress code is to be for the particular activity.

37 FREE DRESS

In school activities where free dress is permitted, students are to choose clothing that: • Is modest, • Is appropriate to the activity being undertaken, • Follows any guidelines included in the Information Letter for that activity, • Is sun smart, and; • Does not contain adverse slogans.

Girls are not to wear low-cut shirts, strappy singlets or clothes designed to show the midriff. Skirts and dresses should be of modest length and fit. Boys are to wear T-shirts in preference to singlets. If swimwear is needed, girls are asked to wear modest one piece or two-piece swimwear. Bikinis are not appropriate.

38 PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE OUT OF UNIFORM

It is expected that all students will be correctly dressed in their school uniform every day. The Secondary Uniform Policy seeks to train students to adhere to a dress code, which is a requirement in most workplaces. Parents are expected to support the Uniform Policy as they would in their children’s workplace, and work with college staff to encourage students to adhere to this dress code. Students who are not wearing their uniform in accordance with the guidelines outlined in this policy should, in the first instance, see their Form Teacher. If any part of the uniform does not comply with the Secondary Uniform Policy parents or caregivers are asked to please either email their students’ Form Teacher or provide a written note, each day that the student is not in correct uniform. An out of uniform notice will be issued to the student and recorded. If this is an ongoing issue, parents or caregivers are asked to contact the College and discuss the matter. On the third occurrence of a student being out of uniform parents or caregivers will be contacted by their students’ Form Teacher to seek clarification on when the issue will be rectified. If a student presents out of uniform without parents or caregivers notification they will be asked to attend the lunchtime detention room that day. It will be determined by senior staff whether or not a lunch time detention will be served. Notifications will be sent home to parents or caregivers if their student does serve a detention. It is likely that repeat offenders will be placed in isolation until the issues regarding their uniform and appearance have been resolved. If a student chooses not to abide by the school’s Uniform Policy then their place in the school is likely to be reviewed.

39 LOST PROPERTY Parents are asked to ensure that all items of clothing are clearly named so that lost uniforms can be identified and returned to students. Lost property is located at High School Student Reception. Parents and students are encouraged to check this throughout the year. At the end of each term, unclaimed lost property will be donated to Charity.

40 CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

The school reserves the right to modify and adjust this policy as it sees the need. We are aware that we live in a society where fashions change regularly and in unexpected directions. Therefore the school will need to review this document in light of new products or fashions or the like.
