The Legend of Vlad Drăculea

It was a land of peace and tranquility over which the voivode Vlad Drăculea ruled.

One day, the voivode’s brother lost a bag with 10 thousand golden coins, so he decided to let

the whole kingdom know that whoever found and returned it, would receive one thousand golden

coins as a reward.

Soon afterwards, a peasant, a common church-goer with the fear of God, found the bag and

gave it to Vlad’s brother. When Vlad’s brother counted the money, he saw that the honest peasant

gave it all to him, thus succeeding in gaining his trust.

He took the peasant to the palace and offered him ten coins a day for the rest of his life, but

he warned him: ‘’ If you have the audacity to trick and fool me I’ll ask my brother to kill your wife

and your children!’’

When he heard these words, the peasant promised that he would be faithful. After working

for months for the voivode’s brother, one late night somebody robbed him. Of course, the peasant

was the blamed one for this, but unfortunately he couldn’t prove his innocence.

The poor man tried to explain that he was not guilty of such a dishonest deed, but the

voivode’s brother didn’t believe him, so he was sentenced to death. Vlad’s brother threw him in

prison, until he was to be hanged. Also, the man had been promised that his wife and his three

children would be killed.

A day before the five people were to be killed, Vlad’s wife had a dream in which justice was

on the peasant and his family’s side. Listening to his wife, Vlad realized that he didn’t want to kill

people if they proved to be innocent, so he decided to seek the truth.

In those times it was told that there was a river of which water caused anyone drinking it tell

the truth. The voivode sent a lot of brave subjects to fetch him that magic water, but none of them

succeeded to get past the dragon named Drăculea. Seeing that, Vlad decided that he would

Page 4: Top 5 historical figures activity book kopya

bring the magic water himself. He set off for that magical place. He travelled over lands and seas

until he reached a faraway place hidden behind a tall, majestic mountain.

The dragon Drăculea, however, was guarding the magic water. The place he had reac hed was

so silent, that you could hear the moon rays touching the ground. In the distance, you could see silent

flashes of lightning piercing the sky from time to time.

…………………………………………………………………………………………

The rain stopped pouring heavy drops. Slowly, from the dark blue sky, a ray of

sunshine came to life, piercing the darkness and with it a deep sorrow grabbed hold of the voivode’s

soul.

Vlad sat on the sad ground. He was getting tired. His thoughts started running

chaotically between dreams and memories, reality and fantasy, forever prisoner between ‘yes’ and

‘no’. ‘’Yes’’, he had to go on because justice will prevail. ‘’No’’, he had to stop because even

breathing was leaving him exhausted. He wanted to reach God, the sensitive painter of the Universe,

to ask for his help.

Vlad reached the Dragon. With a deep roar, the dragon managed to make Vlad

stagger. For one moment, he stood still then he gathered all his strength and threw a sharp spear right

into the Dragon’s heart.

The monster died while watching with moist eyes the ray of sunshine, leaving for a

distant and unknown land like an abandoned child. Thus, the voivode managed to get hold of the

magic water.

Getting back to his kingdom, he gave the man the magic water. The poor peasant had

told the truth: ‘’I didn’t steal anything! I am innocent! Please believe me and spare my wife and

children’’. It was then that the voivode was convinced the man’s innocence. Ever since, Vlad Ţepes

was also known as Vlad Drăculea because he managed to kill the Dragon Drăculea and to make

justice for the honest peasant.

We can report people’s words by using direct speech or reported speech.

Direct speech is the exact words someone used. We use quotation marks (ʻ )̓ in direct speech. e.g. “ Itʼs nice to be home, ˮ Tom said .

Reported speech is the exact meaning of what someone said, but now the exact

words. We do not use quotation marks in reported speech. We can either use the word that after the introductory verb ( say, tell, etc.), or we can omit it.

e.g. Tom said (that) it was nice to be home.

We usually report someone’s words a long time after they were said. In this case the introductory verb is in the past simple and the tenses change as follows :

Direct speech

Present simple: I want to go to bed early, he said. Present continuous: She’s feeding the baby, he said. Present perfect: I’ve bought a new dress, she said.

Past simple: I finished work early, Alex said. Past continuous: I was planning to call you later, she said. Future (will): I’l l talk to you tomorrow, she said.

Narrator: Once the powerful horde of Old Great Bulgaria was on the edge of disappearance

under the strikes of Khazarian Khaganate. While the founder of Old Great Bulgaria - Khan

Kubrat was a smart diplomat and fearless warrior, the times were changing. The great

migration was the reason for his country to appear and it seems it would be the reason for

disappearing.

Khan Kubrat loved watching the night sky. The stars told him the fate of people and

nations. On one such night, staring at the sky, he saw that his star was going out. He called

his five sons - Bayan, Kotrag, Asparuh,Kuber and Altsek - and told them,

Kubrat: My sons, my days on earth are coming to an end!

Narrator: Altsek, the youngest son, cried:

Altsek: No, Father! What are we going to do without you?

Kubrat: I will tell you. Bayan, take that bundle of sticks.

Narrator: Bayan went and took the bundle of sticks that lay by the hearth where the sacred

eternal fire flickered.

Kubrat: Now try to break them all together.

Narrator: Bayan was the oldest, the strongest son of Kubrat, so they called him Batbayan.

He hit the bundle onto his knee – it did not break. He hit a second time –it did not break.

The third time he hit with all his strength but he still could not break it.

Bayan: I can’t do it, Father.

Kubrat: Let the others try, too.

Narrator: The four other sons of Kubrat tried but no one could break the bundle of sticks in

two.

Kubrat: Now, give it to me.

Narrator: They gave him the bundle, he started taking the sticks out f the bundle and easily

breaking them one by one with his weak hands. His sons shouted in one voice:

Sons: Everyone can break them one by one, it is easy!

Kubrat: That's right. And you, if you don’t stay together after my death, everyone will break

you one by one. If you are together like this bundle of sticks, no one can beat you. Do you

understand?

Sons (in one voice): Yes, we understand, Father!

Page 19: Top 5 historical figures activity book kopya

Kubrat: And what did you understand?

Sons: Unity makes strength.

Narrator: Hearing these beautiful words, the great khan Kubrat smiled happily and died.

the sons understood their father’s message: their strength depended on their unity. Kubrat

wanted his sons to be together so they never become other people’s slaves.Unfortunately

Kubrat’s sons did not listen to his words. After he died, they quarreled who should sit on the

throne.

Bayan: I am the oldest and I have to be on the throne.

Kotrag, Asparuh, Kuber, Altsek: You are not going to command us!

Narrator: The next day his father was buried in a Christian way, as he had wished. They

buried him with his sword and scepter, because they could not share them as well. The

brothers divided the people of Great Bulgaria into five equal parts and each stood at the

head of his horde.

Bayan: I'm staying here, on my father's land.

Kotrag: I am going North.

Asparuh: I am going South.

Kuber: Then I go to the West.

Altsek(to Kuber): I am coming with you, brother.

Narrator: And they went off in the four directions of the world. The brothers separated and

ruled independently.Bat Bayan stayed in the capital Fanagoria. Not long after this

Khazarian Hordes came into his lands. The young Khan experienced his first and last

defeat. Kotrag and his people went North where he found Volga Bulgaria.Kuber went to

Panonia and accepted Avariankhagan as his overlord. However several years later he tried

to make coup and to make Bulgarians the reigning faction, but he failed and was forced to

escape in Byzantine Empire in modern day Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). He didn't

found any state, but became Byzantianf ederati. Altzek and his people went to Frankish

kingdom where they were granted lands. However one night the cruel king Dagobert I

ordered the executions of his Bulgarian guests. Only 900 people manage to escape with their

Khan and they found safe heaven in Benevento, Italy, where they mixed with the local

population.

In the summer of 681 AD the small horde of Khan Asparuh crossed the Danube river at its

delta and went to the region called Onglus. It was the beginning of the foundation of

Bulgaria.

Just don’t take too long, we are in a hurry. Ropoša: I will show you the way to Veržej with great pleasure. You can get there whatever your

heart desires. Follow me swiftly, beyond the forest there lies Veržej. Follow me through the

forest. It is not far, just along the path. They ride together when Ropoša whistles. Kurutz 1 (amazed): What does the whistling mean? Ropoša: Nothing, nothing, I whistled just for fun. I often whistle when I am in a company.

Narrator: people of Veržej hear whistling. Then Ropoša whistles for the s econd time and then for the third time. This time even louder. At that moment armed local peasants rush out of the forest. Huge battle emerges. Cunning Ropoša didn’t take Kurutz into Veržej, but into the forest,

where peasants beat them and from then on they didn’t return to our land. Ropoša proved

once again that he is a great mayor/leader/protector of Veržej.

Kid: But, the minaret is sloping.

The assistants of Sinan and all state officials get angry the words of the kid and object to him by saying:

The assistants of Sinan and all state officials: You will know better than Great Sinan. Disappear kid!!!

Great Sinan is calm, signals his assistants not to talk and they start to pull away the minaret by binding a
