1. JAR OF HEARTS – CHRISTINA PERRI

The music video Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri is also a pop music video which shows a range of things which makes it easier for the

audience to identify what type of genre is expected. For example, from certain codes and conventions; the audience is easily able to identify

that the genre is pop. Now since it is a pop music video, there is bound to be a tragic story or even a sweet storyline with a happy ending. In

this case, the music video has a tragic storyline since the reason behind the song is that the singer had a heartbroken at the age of 15.

AUDIENCE FOR JAR OF HEARTS – CHRISTINA PERRIWhen it comes to the audience that this specific music video appeals to, I personally believe that it appeals to teenagers since the storyline is mainly relatable to them. For example, since the lyrics as well as the storyline show that the singer

had been heartbroken, teenagers usually go through the same things for e.g. Friendship, love, heartbreak and so much

more.

REPRESENTATION IN JAR OF HEARTS – CHRISTINA PERRI

The representation in this music video is rather stereotypical. This is because, music videos like these always show the boy breaking the girl’s heart, its hardly ever the other way around. This shows boys as negative people compared to girls, that they’re always the ones doing something wrong; hardly ever the girls.

The technical elements also emphasise the point of the song. For example, for camera work many close ups were used on Christina's face in order to show her facial expressions and also to show the audience that she is going through pain and heartbreak. When it came to editing, CGI was also used to show an actual jar with hearts inside in order to emphasise the title of the song. For sound, non-diegetic sound was used during the entire music video since the storyline shows Christina singing her heart out and expressing her feelings to the boy who broke her heart. When it comes to mise en scene, the costumes of both the characters specifically stand out. For example, Christina is wearing a white dress which symbolises innocence. While the man is wearing black, which connotes danger. The different costumes between the two characters emphasises their personality

THEORY APPLYING TO JAR OF HEARTS – CHRISTINA PERRI.The media theory which can be most relevant to this particular content is Walter Lippman’s theory-Stereotypes. This is because, the storyline shows a stereotype of men breaking hearts which therefore shows a representation of men being bad people in society which is not always the case.

PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND EXHIBITION IN JAR OF HEARTS – CHRISTINA PERRI.

When it came to production, distribution and exhibition; the music video was produced by Atlantic Records which is known for producing various types of music videos for famous singers such as Bruno Mars, Cody Simpson and Ed Sheeran. Now since famous singers have their music videos produced by popular music record labels, the audience easily knows that either successful or unsuccessful music videos are expected. For distribution, the music video was distributed through social networking sites by the singer herself. For example, on Youtube, Tumblr, Facebook and other social networking sites. This eventually lead to the news of the music video being released, spreading through word of mouth; thus resulting in many views on Youtube. When it came to exhibition, the music video was released through several formats. For example, on CDs, on iTunes, on Youtube, on Vevo, along with other different formats.

2. BLACK MAGIC – LITTLE MIX The music video Black Magic by Little Mix is a pop music video which shows a

range of things which makes it easier for the audience to identify what type of genre is expected. For example, from the codes and conventions in this specific music video, the audience is easily able to identify that the genre is pop. Also, since it is a pop music video there are stereotypes which are expected to be seen. For example, the music video shows intertextuality between teen films since it is set in a school. There is a popular but evil girl of the school, and finally there is one handsome boy at the school that all the girls wish to have.

Page 9: Top 5 music video

AUDIENCE FOR BLACK MAGIC – LITTLE MIX

•Now since the genre is pop, I personally believe that the video appeals to teenagers in

particular. This is because it shows people in that particular age range attending school. This

makes it rather more relatable to teenagers. Also, the storyline can somewhat relate to

teenagers too

Page 10: Top 5 music video

REPRESENTATION OF BLACK MAGIC – LITTLE MIX

• The representation shown is negative too. For example, it shows that teenage girls don’t always have value in society; the only time they are noticed is when they are pretty or wearing revealing clothes. An example of this is shown in the music video, when the handsome boy notices all four girls once they change their appearances.

Page 11: Top 5 music video

MECS IN BLACK MAGIC – LITTLE MIX When it comes to technical elements, a range of mid shots have been used to signify

the superiority between all the characters in the music video. For example, when the evil but popular girl pushes all the four girls out of the way, this connotes that they have no value; they will only matter if they are pretty like the popular girls. When it comes to editing, CGI was used throughout some scenes of the video; this is because of the title of the song and also because of the storyline. For example, the girls did Black Magic to become popular at the school and get the attention of not only the handsome boy but also others at the school. For sound, diegetic sound was used at the beginning of the music video when the bells rings. This signifies that school is starting and so is the music video. On the other hand, non-diegetic sound was used throughout the entire music video because of the song. When it comes to mise en scene, the four protagonists which are Little Mix of the video are shown wearing messy but smart clothes which relates to their characters in many ways as they are shown as nerds. But by the end of the music video, they are all shown wearing casual but revealing clothing which relates to their new appearances and makes them look rather confident compared to before.

Page 12: Top 5 music video

THEORY OF BLACK MAGIC - LITTLE MIX

• For this particular music video, I personally believe that Laura Mulvey’s theory-The Male Gaze is relevant because by the end

of the video all the girls are represented as sex symbols through the various types of camera shots used. It shows a

stereotype of all women in society today

Page 13: Top 5 music video

PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND EXHIBITION IN BLACK MAGIC- LITTLE MIX For production, distribution and exhibition; the music video has been produced by Synco Limited. It had been distributed by all the girls themselves through social networking sites, which was

beneficial as it lead to the song becoming number one in the UK. When it came to exhibition, the music video was released

through several formats. For example, CDs, on iTunes, Vevo, and Youtube along with so many more formats. Due to their success on X Factor, it brought even more popularity to all of their songs,

since they came out as winners on the show.

3. THE HEART WANTS WHAT IT WANTS – SELENA GOMEZ

This specific music video also shows a pop genre. As I have mentioned before, the audience are easily able to identify that

the song is a pop song as the storylines tend to be tragic or even sweet. The storyline of this music video is rather tragic, not only

because of the way it is formed but also because of the title itself. The audience are easily able to tell what is coming their

way.

Page 15: Top 5 music video

AUDIENCE FOR HEART WANTS WHAT IT WANTS – SELENA GOMEZ

• When it comes to the audience, this specific music video appeals to teenagers. This again is because teenagers go

through these types of things which makes it easily relatable to them and in some cases even get attached to the singer

knowing that she has been through the same thing they have.

Page 16: Top 5 music video

REPRESENTATION IN THE HEART WANTS WHAT IT WANTS – SELENA GOMEZ

The representation is rather stereotypical since it shows Selena Gomez crying over the boy Justin Bieber who has broken her heart. Now this shows, a stereotypical representation of all girls since many girls react negatively when going through heartbreak. It not only shows a stereotype but it also shows a negative representation since the music video emphasises that girls are unable to function after heartbreak; they are practically seen as weak people in society.

Page 17: Top 5 music video

MECS IN THE HEART WANTS WHAT IT WANTS – SELENA GOMEZ

When it comes to technical elements, for camera a variety of close ups and mid shots were used in order to show Selena’s facial expressions and emphasise more of her feelings. For editing, slow paced editing was used when Selena is shown crying and upset. On the other hand, fast paced editing was used when her and her boyfriend’s wonderful memories are shown to symbolise the fun and energetic times they shared together. When it comes to sound, diegetic sound was used at the beginning of the music video when she talks about her heartbreak and how she is feeling. The diegetic sound was used in order to emphasise more of the song, and the reason behind it. Non-diegetic sound was used throughout the entire music video due to the title of the song ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’.For mise en scene, even though Selena is the main character of the music video; her clothes somehow relate to the song. For example, her outfit is black which symbolises moody and bad, exactly like her mood as well as the song since it is a sad song.

Page 18: Top 5 music video

THEORY OF THE HEART WANTS WHAT IT WANTS – SELENA GOMEZ.

When it comes to media theories, I personally believe that there were two media theories which are relevant to this specific content. For example, Walter Lippman’s theory-Stereotypes, since it shows a stereotype of girls feeling weak and heart broken after being hurt by the person they love. It also applies to Laura Mulvey’s theory-The Male Gaze, since the music video shows certain camera angles of Selena when she is shown wearing revealing clothing.

Page 19: Top 5 music video

PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND EXHIBITION OF THE HEART WANTS WHAT

IT WANTS – SELENA GOMEZ When it comes to production, distribution and exhibition of this music video, the music video was produced by Hollywood Records which is rather famous and very well known for producing music videos for popular artists; one of them being Selena herself. Distribution occurred from Selena when she had promoted her song through social networking sites. For example, on her Youtube channel, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. When it came to exhibition, the music video was released in a variety of formats. For example, on iTunes, through CDs, on Youtube and Vevo.

4. NATALIE LA ROSE - SOMEBODYWhen it comes to the genre of this particular music video, it is RnB. Now

RnB is a genre which many people from different age ranges tend to listen to; therefore there are various types of codes and conventions which show that specific genre. For example, most RnB music videos do not

have a storyline. This is because it is usually a outgoing party song and with this specific song it is the case. This song mainly appeals to

teenagers or young adults as those are the people who are usually outgoing and always partying. This is one of the reasons why certain lyrics are used since it appeals to a mass audience of a specific age range as it

cannot be aimed at younger children.

Page 21: Top 5 music video

REPRESENTATION OF SOMEBODY – NATALIE LA ROSE The representation shown is rather stereotypical since in various types of RnB music videos, the women are shown as sex symbols or the main person who the entire music video is revolved around. Now since

Natalie is the main singer, the music video is definitely going to revolved around her, but along with that it

shows that she is rather attractive which draws a lot of attention towards not only the song but also on her as a singer. Also, not only is she shown as a sex symbol

but her back up dancers are too since they are wearing revealing clothes to relate more to the title song as well

as the genre.

Page 22: Top 5 music video

MECS OF SOMEBODY – NATALIE LA ROSE

When it comes to the technical elements, camera is used through a range of mid shots and close ups in order to show her character as well as her revealing clothing. For example, when she is dancing around in her revealing outfit; a bunch of close ups are shown. For example, on her stomach or her face and other parts of her body.Throughout the music video, I had identified that fast past editing was used throughout the entire music video since the song itself is rather fast paced which helps emphasise the entire song and makes it more enjoyable for the audience. For sound, non-diegetic sound was used throughout the entire music video through the title song. When it comes to mise en scene, through costume and props Natalie is shown wearing short revealing clothing which are light coloured, which tend to emphasise her character in the music video since it is a happy song. The setting used was also a place where people are easily able to party. For example, one scene shows a club setting which in reality is where this specific song is most likely to be played.

Page 23: Top 5 music video

THEORY OF SOMEBODY – NATALIE LA ROSEThe best theory which can be applied to this particular content is

Waltar Lippman’s theory-Stereotypes. This is because it shows a stereotype of women being sex symbols and wearing specific clothing in order to attract men. Another theory which can be

applied to this particular song is Laura Mulvey’s theory-The Male Gaze. For example, Natalie is dressed in a specific way in order to attract the attention of men and it makes it easier to identify this

through the various types of camera angles, shots and dance moves she does.

Page 24: Top 5 music video

PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND EXHIBITION OF SOMEBODY BY NATALIE LA ROSE

When it comes to production, distribution and exhibition; it had been produced by Republic Records which is known to produce many popular artists’ music videos. In order to distribute the song, Natalie had distributed the song through social networking sites, which lead to it being a rather popular song. For the exhibition, the music video was released in various types of formats. For example, on iTunes, CDs, Youtube and Vevo.

5. SHAGGY MOHOMBI FAYDEE COSTI – I NEED YOUR LOVE

The genre of this specific music video is pop/dancehall. Dancehall is genre which many age ranges tend to listen to

since the songs hardly ever contain any explicit content which maybe unsuitable for certain age groups. Therefore, various types of codes and conventions represent this specific genre.

For example, even though the lyrics tell a story, the video does not since this specific music video only shows the artist

partying on a boat as well as singing along and enjoying themselves.

Page 26: Top 5 music video

AUDIENCE OF I NEED YOUR LOVE - SHAGGY MOHOMBI FAYDEE COSTI

•When it comes to the audience of this specific music video, it usually appeals to a range of age ranges since it does not include explicit

content or anything which could be unsuitable for specific age groups

Page 27: Top 5 music video

REPRESENTATION OF I NEED YOUR LOVE - SHAGGY MOHOMBI FAYDEE COSTI

When it comes to the representation of this particular music video, it is presented rather positively as well as stereotypically. For example, it is represented positively through the artists since it shows the singers as happy

artists who party all the time and are bringing happiness to their fans as shown in specific scenes

throughout the music video. For the stereotypes in the music video, two girls are shown sitting with the two

main artists. This tends to be used a lot in these types of music videos in order to make the main artist look attractive and somewhat manly since it makes them

look as if they attract a lot of women and that they are attractive themselves.

Page 28: Top 5 music video

MECS OF I NEED YOUR LOVE - SHAGGY MOHOMBI FAYDEE COSTI

When it comes to the technical elements; the camera work shows various types of shots such as wide shots as well as mid shots in order to show more of what is going on in the music video. For example, wide shots were mainly used when the artist was shown performing at their own concerts, and the audience are enjoying it. On the other hand, the mid shots were shown when the two main singer were singing the song to the camera which shows their facial expressions. Their facial expressions symbolise their feelings since the lyrics express their love towards a specific person they might have written the song for. When it came to editing, fast paced editing was used throughout the entire music video in order to emphasise the song since it is a happy, fun and outgoing song. It is a song which is mainly heard at parties or at clubs. The fast paced editing makes the whole music video rather enjoyable for the audience. For sound, non-diegetic sound was used throughout the entire music video through the song itself. When it came to mise en scene, costume and props which the main artists were wearing shows the innocence since the song is a rather happy song. Also, since the setting of the music video is in Spain the clothes which everyone in the music video is wearing is rather short as well as light coloured, which matches the theme of the song. The lighting was also bright when it came to the two main artists singing as it symbolises that they are the main artist and that the music video is revolved around them since the song is sang by them.

Page 29: Top 5 music video

THEORY OF I NEED YOUR LOVE - I NEED YOUR LOVE - SHAGGY MOHOMBI FAYDEE COSTI

The media theory which applies best to this particular song is Walter Lippman’s theory-Stereotypes. This is because it shows stereotypes of women around the men as sex symbols, it is a stereotype in these types of music videos that women are used as sex symbols in order to make the men more attractive and manly. This also makes Laura Mulvey’s theory-The Male Gaze relevant to this particular content
