The “slow, steady” evolution ofworkplace practices such asmaternity-leave top-ups, share-

purchase programs, flexible workspaceand tuition subsidies have created acompetitivemarketplace that bothattracts skilled employees and retainstheir talent, says Richard Yerema,founder andmanaging editor of Canada’sTop 100 Employers.And it’s a trend that’s being seen both

regionally and nationally.“Trends forme aremeasured over a

long window.We see a continuing evolu-tion in employees offeringmaternity-leave top-ups— the very best will top upto a full year.When your competition isdoing it, youmust recognize themarket-place has evolved. When you’re as diverse as TransLink,Metro Vancouver’s transportationauthority, it can be a challenge keepingmore than 6,700 employees engagedwhen they’re spread across the largesttransit-service area in Canada.TransLink’s mentorship program is

just one avenue the company uses tofoster cross-enterprise understandingwithin the organization.“I’ve been at TransLink for three years,

and was previously a student with themdoing mymaster’s,” says Sabrina LauTexier, project manager with engineer-ing and project services, who joined thementorship program as a “mentee.”Her early work with TransLink includ-

ed concept designs for passenger facili-ties such as bus exchanges and SkyTrainstations, including Burquitlam Station onthe new Evergreen Extension.She says she signed up for the mentor-

ship program because, “I like to soakup as many opportunities as possible. Ididn’t know the person I was paired withor what his department did, so I was ableto learnmore about him and his businessmodel.”Lau Texier’s partner was Dan Savitsky,

director of fleet technical support forCoast Mountain Bus Co. (CMBC), theTransLink operating company thatruns the hundreds of buses thatcrisscross its 1,800-square-kilometreservice area, plus the SeaBus.“I’ve hadmentors in the past in other

industries and found it to be a valuableexperience,” says Savitsky. “It’s an oppor-tunity frommy side to get to know other

parts of the organization — it’s importantto understand what’s going on in otherareas and it’s interesting when you’relistening to people talk about their issuesand concerns.“One of the things that came through to

me is that some challenges and problemsare universal. Everybody is experiencingthe same kinds of issues.”For Lau Texier, it was a chance to “get

out of the comfort zone,” and it’s helpedher become better at her own job.“I like to foster and develop relation-

ships with everyone I work with.”She’s gone on to become amentor

herself at the School of Community andRegional Planning at the University ofBritish Columbia.Savitsky says one of the things that

makes the TransLink enterprise atop employer is the people.“This is the seventh different industry

I’ve been in. I come from a heavy indus-try background,” he says. “For me, it’san opportunity to do a bit of give-back— contributing to what’s going on here,both socially and environmentally in thetransit system.”Thementorship program is just one
