Detail may not add to totals due to rounding.

1/ For purposes of this report, employment data was modified as follows. a. Year ago data was grouped under the current industry/location/ownership for each firm, shifting year ago employment between industries for reclassified firms. b. New Multiple Worksite Reporters in 2005 were prorated for 2004. c. Predecessor/Successors were treated as continuing accounts. d. Corrections were made to the data since the last processing for these quarters.Consequently, employment levels are valid only within the context of this report and are not comparable to other publications.

2/ Number of jobs replaced or created for every job lost or destroyed. A rate of less than 1 indicates a decrease in employment.

3/ Confidential data and industries with fewer than 500 employees are excluded from these tables.

Methodology Used for Creating the Job Creation and Job Destruction Tables When reviewing the annual publication Employment and Wages and the quarterly publication Labor Market Bulletin, comparisons made are based on net changes and do not reflect actual economic activity taking place between the comparison periods. If you were to look at Employment and Wages and saw an employment increase of 4,000, this would mean that when compared to a previous point in time there was an increase of 4,000 jobs. It does not tell you what caused the changes. Job Creation and Job Destruction is much more detailed and gives you the opportunity to see the behind the scenes activities that caused the net increase of 4,000 jobs. You now will be able to tell how many establishments were new, went out of business, or had job increases/decreases. In this publication, net change equals (expansions + openings) minus (contractions + closings). In order to track real changes in employment and wages it is necessary to use comparable quarters so data are minimally affected by seasonal activities. Vermont does not seasonally adjust data for this publication. The information used to construct the gross job gains and gross job losses statistics are from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program. These data include all establishments subject to State unemployment insurance (UI) laws and Federal agencies subject to the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees program. To create continuity and give an accurate account of activities between counties and industries, any employer with NAICS (North America Industry Classification System) codes or location codes that were changed in the current quarter were also changed in the year ago quarter. If a multiple worksite reporter was collapsed to a single in the current quarter, this was also done in the year ago quarter. If an employer reported as a new multiple worksite reporter, then the year ago quarter was also adjusted and the locations prorated based on current quarter activity. On the rare occasion that there is a change in ownership, the comparable year ago quarter would also be changed. Predecessor/successor activities are treated as ongoing establishments. Because of the many modifications made, the data from this publication are valid only within the context of this report and are not comparable to other publications. The finished tables can be found on our website www.vtLmi.info. DOL (Deparrtment of Labor) has also released data called Business Employment Dynamics(BED). Information regarding this can be found on their website www.bls.gov. The methodology used by them is somewhat different than ours and their data are seasonally adjusted. If you have any questions about the methodology used for creating these tables, please contact Andy Condon at 802-828-4153 or Craig Colvin at 802-828-4320.
