INNOVATION is the cornerstone oeconomic growth and success, or both thecompanies that innovate and the countries thatembrace them.

For the past several years, talk about innovationhas permeated news stories, corporate boardrooms and government orums. No wonder theterm innovation has become a buzz word o the21st century, especially as companies and nationsgrapple with a shiting global economy, nancialcrises o unprecedented proportions and a desire

to create the next era o opportunity or uturegenerations.

These actors, in conjunction with the awarenessat Thomson Reuters o the powerul insights thatcan be gleaned rom studying patent inormation, prompted us to seize the moment and developa program that measures innovation rom anunbiased and scientic perspective.

Patent activity has always been an indicator oinnovation. However, innovation comprises much

more than mere patent ling volume. As such, wedeveloped a range o metrics based on variousacets o innovation that relate to patenting andscience. The Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 100Global InnovatorsSM are companies that invent ona signicant scale; are working on developmentswhich are acknowledged as innovative by patentoces across the world, and by their peers; and, whose inventions are so important that they seekglobal protection or them.

This award acknowledges innovation in its purestorm. Being recognized as a Top 100 Global

Innovator is a prestigious distinction. It conrmsan organizations commitment to progressinginnovation globally, to the protection o ideas andto the commercialization o inventions.

Thomson Reuters Top 100 Global Innovators arethe world leaders in innovation.

The methodology used to determine the 2011Top 100 Global Innovators was developed byThomson Reuters and approved by severalIP-savvy, external organizations. While the nalmethodology is proprietary, we recognize theneed or a deeper explanation o how the list wascompiled.

The ollowing is a closer look at the data used and

how it was calculated and analyzed. ThomsonReuters Derwent World Patents Index (DWPISM),Derwent Patents Citation Index, QuadrilateralPatent Index, and Thomson Innovation, theIP intelligence and collaboration platorm, wereutilized in our research and analysis. Comparativeanalysis was done using the Thomson ReutersEikon platorm, the single source or nancialproessionals to turn inormation into action.

The criteria or the Top 100 Global Innovatoraward are:

1: SUCCESSPatenting an invention through one or morepatent oces is expensive. Not all patentapplications pass through the examinationprocess and are granted. The success metricmeasures the ratio o published applications(those patents which are led and publiclypublished by the patent oce but not yetgranted) to granted patents over the most recentthree years.

2: GLOBALProtecting an invention in major world markets isan indication o the signicant value a companyplaces on its intellectual property. The numbero innovative patents that have quadrilateralpatents in their patent amilies, according to theThomson Reuters Quadrilateral Patent Index, was calculated to create a ratio that shows whichcompanies place a high value on their portolios

in major world markets. The quadrilateral patentauthorities is comprised o the Chinese PatentOce, the European Patent Oce, the JapanesePatent Oce and the United States Patent andTrademark Oce.

3: INFLUENCEThe impact o an invention down the linecan be determined by looking at how oten itis subsequently cited by other companies intheir inventions. Through the Thomson ReutersDerwent Patents Citation Index database, wecounted citations to each organizations patents

over the most recent ve years, excludingsel-citations, and put a weighted value on thismeasurement o 50%.

4: VOLUMEThis award ocuses on companies that areresponsible or generating a sizeable amounto innovation. All organizations with 100 ormore innovative patents rom the most recentthree years were included in our analysis. An innovative patent is dened as the rstpublication in a patent document o a new

technology, drug, business process, etc. In DWPI,these are called basic patents. DWPI providesa record o patents published by nearly 50patent issuing authorities worldwide to enablea comprehensive picture o the innovationlandscape. Subsequent lings or the sameinvention are recorded as equivalents in DWPIand collated in patent amilies and, or thisanalysis, were not included.

New ideas lie at the heart o innovation, but

ideas alone are not enough. Innovation requires

    translating ideas into value-adding products

and services. . . . Bridging the gap between anidea and its benefcial result is the crucial step in

    innovation. . . . Success will demand a greater

ability to quickly close the gap.

10 THOMSON REUTERS 2011 TOP 100 GLOBAL INNOVATORS

    GEOGRAPHIC BREAKOUT

Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 100 GlobalInnovator companies span the globe. Thelargest percentage is rom North America: 40%.Asia accounts or 31% o the most innovativecompanies in the world and Europe or 29%. Abreakout o the Top 100 companies by country isin Figure 1.

In Asia, Japan dominates with 27% o therepresentation. As a testament to Japans solidinnovation oundation, it has representativecompanies in 12 o the 16 industries. The onlyother Asian nation present is South Korea, with4% o the companies. The lack o companies romChina is noteworthy and underscores the act thatalthough China is leading the world in patentvolume, quantity does not equate to infuenceand quality.

There is much broader representation acrossEurope, with six European nations having oneor more companies in the Top 100 Innovatorslist. France is the innovation leader in Europe, with 11 organizations spread across a numbero industries. Interestingly, all o the ScienticResearch entities in the list are rom France: IFPEnergies Nouvelles; CNRS, the French NationalCenter or Scientic Research; and Commissariat lnergie Atomique. Given the geographicootprint o France, its representation in the Top100 Global Innovator list is impressive.

Another European surprise is the Principality oLiechtenstein. This country o approximately 62square miles (just over 160 square kilometers)and approximately 35,000 people is also hometo one o the most innovative companies in theworld: privately owned machine manuacturerHilti Corporation.
