Foundation Pieced Blocks1. Make (80) copies of the Foundation Pattern.

2. Select the following fabrics: Fabric A: (1) 3” x 61⁄2” (7.62cm x 16.51cm) strip Fabric B: (1) 3” x 61⁄2” (7.62cm x 16.51cm) strip Fabric C: (2) 4” x 4” (10.16cm x 10.16cm) squares Fabric D: (1) 5” x 5” (12.70cm x 12.70cm) square Fabric E: (1) 3” x 9” (7.62cm x 22.86cm) strip

3. Reduce the stitch length on your machine to 2mm or a little shorter to help perforate the paper, which will make it easier to remove later without damaging the stitching.

4. Take one copy of the Foundation Pattern. Note that each section on the foundation pattern has a number.

5. Place a 5” (12.70cm) Fabric D square RIGHT SIDE UP on the unprinted side of the foundation over the area labeled Section 1 (Fig. 1). Make sure that all edges of the fabric extend at least 1⁄2” (1.27cm) beyond the solid lines of the entire section.

8. After stitching, place the foundation printed side up on your cutting mat. Fold back and crease out of the way the unpieced part of the paper along the line of stitching to reveal the two layers of fabric underneath. Use your rotary cutter and ruler to trim the seam allowances to 1⁄4” (.64cm) from the stitching line. Do not cut the paper.

9. Fold the foundation back in place to cover the trimmed seam allowances. Flip the foundation to the side with the fabric and then press Fabric B toward the trimmed seam allowances.

10. Next place a 3” x 61⁄2” (7.62cm x 16.51cm) Fabric A strip on top of Fabric D square, right sides together, with at least 1⁄2” (1.27cm) extending past the solid sewing line that separates Sections 1 and 3 (Fig. 4). Pin both pieces of fabric in place.

Square in a Square Blocks18. Select the following fabrics:

Fabric D: (4) 6” x 6” (15.24cm x 15.24cm) HST Fabric J: (2) 21⁄2” x 8” (6.35cm x 20.32cm) strips and (2) 21⁄2” x 12” (6.35cm x 30.48cm) strips Fabric K: (1) 53⁄4” x 53⁄4” (14.61cm x 14.61cm) square

19. Stitch Fabric D triangles to opposite edges of the Fabric K square, centering, and press the seams outward (Fig. 11). Stitch the remaining (2) triangles to the raw edges of the square and again press the seams outward. Square and trim the unit to 8” x 8” (20.32cm x 20.32cm).

21. Repeat Steps 18 through 20 to make a total of (5) blocks in each of the (4) fabric combinations shown in Fig. 13 on page 8.

Quilt Top Assembly22. Following the Quilt Layout on page 9 for color

placement and orientation, lay out the blocks, setting triangles, and corner triangles in (8) diagonal rows.

23. Sew the blocks together in each row and number the rows for easier assembly. Press the seams in alternate directions for adjacent rows.

24. Sew the rows together in order, matching adjacent seams. Press the seams in one direction. To complete, add remaining corner triangles. Remove all paper from the foundation paper pieced units.

Finishing25. Sew together the (8) 21⁄2” x WOF (6.35cm x WOF)

Fabric A binding strips end to end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.

26. Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed.

27. Leaving an 8” (20.32cm) tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12” (30.48cm) from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4” (.64cm) and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.

28. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.
