GENERAL HANDLING PRECAUTIONS

Do not submerge the instrum ent into water. The instrument ca r not be sub-merged underwater. The instrument is designed based on the International Standard (IP Code) IPX 6, therefore it is protected ; rom the normal shower or rainfall.

Setting the instrum ent on a tripodWhen mounting the instrument on a tripod, use a wooden tripod when possible. The vibrations that may occur when using a metallic tri pod can effect the measuring precision.

Installing the tribrachIf the tr brac.h is installed incorrectly , the measuring precision could be effected Occasionally check the adjusting screws on the tribrach. Make sure the base fixing lever is locked and the base fixing screws are tightened.

Guarding the instrum ent against shocksWhen transporting the instrument, provide some protection to m inim ize risk of shocks. Heavy shocks may cause the measurement to be faulty.

Carrying the instrum entAlw ays carry the instrument by ts handgrip.

Exposing the instrum ent to extrem e heat.Do not leave the instrument in extreme heat for longer than necessary. It cou d adversely affect its performance.

Sudden changes of temperatureAny sudden change of temperature to the instrum ent or prism may result in a red jction of measuring distance range, i.e when taking the instrument out from a heated vehicle. Let instrument acclimate itself to ambient temperature.

Battery level checkConfirm battery leve remaining before operating

PREPARATION FOR MEASUREMENT

2.1 Setting Instrum ent Up For MeasurementMount the instrument to the tripod. Level and center the instrument precisely to insure the best performance. Use tripods w ith a tripoa screw of 5/8 in. diameter and * 1 threads per inch, such as the Type E TOPCON wide- frame wooden tripod.

Reference: Leveling and Centering the Instrument

1. Setting up the TripodFirst, extend the exiension legs to su itab le leng ths and t ig h te n the sc rew s on th e ir midsections.

2. A ttach ing the Instrum ent on the Tripod Head

Place the instrument care fu lly on the triood head and slide the instrument by loosening the tripod screw. If the plumb bob is positioned right over the center of the point, s lig h tly tighten the tripod screw.

3. Roughly Leveling the Instrum ent by Using the Circular Level

Repeat the procedures 0 and <2 for each 90“ (10Og) rotation of the instrument and check w h e th er the bubble is co rrectly centered for all four points.

5. Centering by Using the Optical Plum m et Telescope

Adjust the eyepiece o f the optical plummet telescope to your eyesight.Slide the instrument by loosening the tripod screw, place the point on the center mark, and then tighten Ibe tripod screw. Sliding the instrument carefully not to rotate that allows you to get the least dislocation of the bubble.

The batte ry opera ting tim e w ill vary depending on the environm ental conditions such as ambient temperature, charging time, the number of t mes of charging and discharging etc. It is recommended for safety to charge the battery beforehand or to prepare spare full charged batteries. For general usage of the battery, see chapter 14" Power source and charging". The battery power remaining display shows the power level regarding to the measurement mode now operating. The safety cond tion indicated by the batl.ery power remaining display in the angle measurement mode does not necessarily assjre the battery’s ab ility to be used in the distance measurement mode.It may happen that the mode change from the angle mode to the distance mode w ill stop the operation because of insufficient battery power for the distance mode which consumes more power than angle mode.Note that '.he EDM unit is working w hen "V-OSET" and the battery power remaining display shown at the power ON, which shows as an easy battery check before use.

2.4 Vertical and Horizontal Angle T ilt Correction(GTS-212/213 have vertical angle correction only)

When the tilt sensors are activated, automatic correction of vertical and horizontal angle for m islevelment is displa/ed.

To ensure a precise angle measurement tilt sensors must be turned on. The display can also be used to fine level the instrument. If the (TILT OVER) display appears the instrument is out of automatic compensation range and must be leveled manually

Notes 1 : Recharging should take olace in a room w ith an ambient temperature range of 10°C to 401C (50SF to 104°F).

2 : Exceeding the specified charging tim e may shorten the life of the batteryand should be avoided if possible.

3 : The battery source w ill discharge w hen stored and should be checkedbefore using w ith instrum ent.

4 : Be sure to charge a stored battery every 3 or 4 months and Store in a place at3Q’C or below when it w ill not used for a long period. If you allow the ba-.tery to be completely discharged, it w ill have an effect on the overall performance for proper charging in the future.Keep batteries charged at all times.
