K4 English and Maths Activites Topic 2: The Very Hungry Caterpillar Activity Scheme Aim: The aim this week is to use the story of The Very hungry Caterpillar to practice both English and Maths skills. Each day’s session will have one English activity and one Maths activity. The resources needed for each session are on the pages following each sessions plan. If you do not have access to a printer then the work can be completed on paper. At the end of these plans are some more art/craft-based activities if your child would like to do some. Session 1: Length of session: 40minutes Aim of session: To introduce the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In the first next then boxes they could draw a picture of some of the things the caterpillar ate on each day 3) Maths: Ask your child to complete the Hungry Caterpillar Addition sheets. They have to look at the fruits the hungry caterpillar ate and add them together. There are 3 sheets, they can complete one, two or all three depending on their ability. Topic 2: The Very Hungry Caterpillar Activity Scheme

Aim: The aim this week is to use the story of The Very hungry Caterpillar to practice both English and

Maths skills. Each day’s session will have one English activity and one Maths activity. The resources needed

for each session are on the pages following each sessions plan. If you do not have access to a printer then

the work can be completed on paper. At the end of these plans are some more art/craft-based activities if

your child would like to do some.

Session 1: Length of session: 40minutes

Aim of session: To introduce the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Activity: 1) If possible, follow the link below to watch a short animated film of The Very

(If you can’t access the story online, I have included a version in the pages following this plan)

2) English: Ask your child to complete the Book review worksheet. In the first next then boxes they could draw a picture of some of the things the caterpillar ate on each day

3) Maths: Ask your child to complete the Hungry Caterpillar Addition sheets. They have to look at the fruits the hungry caterpillar ate and add them together. There are 3 sheets,

they can complete one, two or all three depending on their ability.

Feedback: Completed worksheets or photos of your child completing the work.

Session 2: Length of session: 40minutes

Aim of session: English: Handwriting and recognising words that match a picture. Maths: Subtraction up to 10

Activity:

1) English: Talk to your child about all the foods the hungry caterpillar ate, how many can they remember? On the ‘Foods the very hungry caterpillar ate’ sheet ask your child to write down the names of the food next to the picture.

(If your child struggles with spelling, I have included a word mat that they can use to copy the correct spelling)

1) Maths: Subtraction. Ask your child to complete the Fruit themed Subtraction worksheets (There are 3 different levels depending on your child’s ability.) If your child struggles with subtraction you could use some objects you have in the house to help them. For example, if you have 6 pieces of fruit and you take away 2 ask them to count how many pieces of fruit are left- this can be done with any items in your house it does not need to be fruit)

Session 3 Length of session: 40minutes

Aim of session: English: To Describe your favourite 3 foods Maths: To add two then three digits together

Activity:

1) English: The Very Hungry caterpillar liked to eat lots of different foods, ask your child to draw a picture of their 3 favourite things to eat and write a sentence underneath to explain why they like it. (I have included some sentence starters and a word bank of words they could use to describe why they like it)

2) Maths: Ask your child to complete the Roll add and colour game. They can either play this on their own or you can play with them. It asks them to add two numbers together on the first version and three on the second.

If you do not have dice at home, you could write the numbers 1-6 on pieces of paper and lay them face down on the table they could then turn them over and add them together.

Feedback: Completed worksheets or send us a photo of your child eating their favourite food!!

Talk to other family members and ask them what their favourite food is? Why do they like it?

If your favourite food isn’t the healthiest of choices, why do you think it is important to eat a wide variety of different foods?

Session 4 Length of session: 40minutes

Aim of session: English: To identify the correct word to create a sentence that makes sense Maths: Addition to 20

Activity:

1) English: Ask your child to complete the Sentence game worksheet. They will need to pick the correct word from the 3 options below the sentence. Once they have filled in the gap ask them to read the sentence back to you. To practice their handwriting skills, they could copy out the completed sentences onto paper or on the back of the worksheet if you have access to a printer.

2) Maths: Addition to 20 colour by number worksheet. Ask your child to add up the numbers in the different sections of the picture and colour them the correct colour using the key. Once they have finished it will reveal a beautiful butterfly picture!!!

Discussion points with someone in your household:

Sequencing: Ask your child to tell you the days of the week in order. Then ask them what day is after….? What day is before..? e.g. What day comes after Tuesday. Talk

about the months of the year, can they put them in the right order?

Session 5 Length of session: 40minutes

Aim of session: English: Creating sentences using a picture as a prompt Maths: Measuring and ordering length

Activity:

1) English: Read through the story with your child again and using the pictures and sentence starters on The Very Hungry Caterpillar prompt picture worksheet as a guide ask them to write a sentence about what happened in the story.

2) Maths: Your child will need a ruler for this activity. Ask them to use the ruler to measure the length of the different caterpillars. Explain they should measure the caterpillar from the end of its body to the front of its face as below

If you do not have access to a printer find some objects in the house for your child to measure.

3) Maths: Ordering length: Ask your child to cut out the

caterpillars and place them on the leaves from shortest to longest. If you do not have access to a printer are there some long objects in your house your child could place in order from longest to shortest such as: A belt A roll of tinfoil A toilet roll A necklace A bracelet
