Topic: Life Cycle of a Star

Essential Question: What determines the life cycle of a star?

To put the size of stars into perspective…

• Star's Sizes video (2:34 long)

Topic: Life Cycle of a StarEssential Question: What determines the life cycle of a star?

Stellar Nebula (1st Stage)

• A ball of gas and dust that is pulled together by gravity

• Hydrogen atoms fuse into Helium atoms which creates energy

• The energy is SO powerful that it ignites

Pillars of Creation: The Eagle Nebula

Topic: Life Cycle of a StarEssential Question: What determines the life cycle of a star?

Main Sequence (2nd Stage)

• Hydrogen is fusing into helium at its core (center) which gives off a lot of heat

• An average size star can last 10 Billion years

• A massive star’s main sequence is much shorter because it burns through its Hydrogen much faster

• Massive stars burn hotter and brighter than average size stars

The Sun: An Average size star in its Main Sequence

3rd Stage of a star’s life

Red Giant

Star begins to burn all of

its hydrogen.

The outer layers will

collapse, become heated by

the core and expand out

forming a red giant.

Super Red GiantThe hydrogen has turned into helium

This star has a helium core

The core is surrounded by gas that is cooling off and expanding

Red Giant in comparison to the Sun

Topic: Life Cycle of a StarEssential Question: What determines the life cycle of a star?

4th Stage of a star’s life

Average Size Star Massive Star

Planetary NebulaCore of the star contracts and the leftover helium atoms fuse into carbon

Energy is released and the outer layers of the star begin to drift into outer space

Star loses most of its mass

Supernova

Gravity causes the core of

the star to collapse at a very

high speed

This creates an explosion;

the brightest, most powerful

explosion that exists

Planetary Nebula Supernova

5th Stage of a Star’s life

Average Size StarWhite Dwarf

The leftover center of a planetary nebula

Made of highly compressed carbon

Can shine for billions of years

White Dwarfs

5th Stage of a Massive Star’s life

Black HoleNeutron Star

The core that is left over after a supernova

Made of neutrons

Gravity is so powerful that the core spins at a very fast speed

Only happens if the star is less than 3 solar masses

Happens if the star is

more than 3 solar masses

Core leftover from a supernova will collapse and form a black hole

Gravity is SO powerful, that not even light can escape it

Now take some time…

• Take 2 minutes to go over your notes and highlight or underline the main ideas that answer the essential question, you should nothighlight everything:

• Essential Question: What determines the life cycle of a star?

Time to use the left hand column

• You will now write your own questions using the verbs provided.
