Thurs

11.01.11

I will practice identifying the Carbon Compounds & learn what Enzymes are.

MT 09 Compounds MT 09 Compounds of Life!of Life!

1. Look on p.76 in your ISN for help

2. Which of the following are Proteins OR Carbohydrates?

1. Sucrose2. Lactose3. Cellulose4. Fructose5. Lipase6. Endonuclease7. Protease8. Endopeptidase

Enzymes act as Enzymes act as Catalysts!Catalysts!a) A PROTEIN

b) ACTs as a CATALYST… which starts & speeds up reactions

BUT not used up in reaction Enzymes are used over & over again in your body

1. What are ENZYMES?

1. TPX Catalyst Bat – makes the ball come off bat faster!

2. All That Remains – Become the Catalyst

3. Linkin park – The Catalyst - about being a part of speeding up a revolution

Enzymes are Vital to Enzymes are Vital to Life!Life!

2. What is the imp. of enzymes?

a) MAKE LIFE POSSIBLEW/o enzymes, no activity or chemical reactions would take place…Vitamins, minerals, or hormones could do any work w/o enzymes.

b) MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS Because enzymes control METABOLISM = EVERY chemical reaction in body)

c)c) LOWER Activation Energy of chem. reac. LOWER Activation Energy of chem. reac.

• Think of it this way: Enzymes are the "labor force" that builds your body just like construction workers are the labor force that builds your house. You may have all the necessary building materials & lumber, but to build a house you need workers or the house will not get built!

• In the same way, you may have all the nutrients -- vitamins, proteins, minerals, etc., for your body -- but you still need the enzymes -- a vital element -- to keep the body alive and well.

Activation EnergyActivation Energy

3. What is activation energy?

4. Does Activation Energy Raise OR Lower in presence of enzyme?

• Activate means to START

• Activation Energy (OR Energy of Activation) = AMOUNT OF ENERGY IT TAKES TO START A REACTION

• Lowers

For example…For example… Which guy LOWERS the Activation Energy Which guy LOWERS the Activation Energy

Which guy would take less “Energy to Activate” Which guy would take less “Energy to Activate” the moving of the rock? the moving of the rock?

The guy who obviously “includes ENZYMES” in his diet?Or the guy who obviously “does NOT include enzymes” in his diet?

Catalysed VS Uncatalysed Reactions

Reaction Progress Over Time

Takes MORE Energy

1. Which line takes LESS energy?

2. Which line ‘finished 1st’?

3. So, if an enzyme acts as a catalyst, that speeds up chemical reactions, which line shows a catalyzed reaction?

4. Which line is the one you want in your body, so to speak???

WITH WITH ENZYMEENZYME!!

W/OUT W/OUT ENZYMEENZYME!!

Takes LESS Energy CatalyzedCatalyzed

UNcatalyzeUNcatalyzedd

A. What are ENZYMES?

B. What is the SUBSTRATE?

C. Where is the ACTIVE SITE?

D.What is the ENZYME- SUBSTRATE COMPLEX?

E.What are the PRODUCTS?

F. What are INHIBITORS?

Thing doing the reacting

Thing that is being acted onPlace where substrate fits into enzyme

Things that get in the way: they change the shape of the active site drugs, alcohol, genetic disorder, temp., pH

Things that are made

How Enzymes Work:How Enzymes Work:

•‘Complex’ = made of many connected parts •i.e. the enzyme + the substrate

Did we reach our Did we reach our goal?goal?

Our goal today was for you to understand the Enzyme-Substrate Complex…

1. Did you reach that goal? How do you know that you reached the goal?

2. What are you going to do if you did not reach that goal??

1.Read Chapter 2.4 & 2.5

2.MiniSummatie #2 on Monday – Enzymes & Activation Energy
