Card machine for club dives

After a long time trying, we finally have a card machine to take club payments. From now on, if you want to

book onto a club trip, you don’t need to come to the Dive Centre with lots of cash on you. We can now take

the payments over the phone to make things easier.

Finance packages

Bolton Area Divers are very pleased to announce we can now

offer divers the opportunity to make their purchases on

finance, making their repayments on a monthly basis.

This is done through a finance company with a typical rate of

7.5%.

The finance can be used to pay for:

• Dive equipment

• Dive Courses

• Dive trips and holidays

Terms and conditions apply. Please contact the Dive Centre team for further details.

a panicking diver underwater you will learn how to

react and deal with Diving emergencies swiftly

and effectively.

wreck diving, with the wreck diver course. During the course

wrecks as a whole, so that you don’t just get more from your

wreck dives but you explore them safely whilst enjoying their

unique window into Maritime History.

Seal Team / Master Seal Team

Saturday 16th July and every other Saturday

following this date

and in a fun series of AquaMissions.

DSMB

Theory Tuesday 14th July; Practical Sunday 17th July

Surface marker buoys (SMBs) allow scuba divers to mark boundaries for

mapping or search and recovery, alert boat traffic, or provide a line as a visual

reference for ascending divers. During two dives, learn the proper techniques

and protocols for using surface marker buoys and delayed surface marker

buoys (DSMBs) in the local area. A must for anyone planning to dive around

the coastal waters of Great Britain or further afield.

DSMB

Theory Tuesday 14th July; Practical Sunday 30th July

Surface marker buoys (SMBs) allow scuba divers to mark boundaries for

mapping or search and recovery, alert boat traffic, or provide a line as a

visual reference for ascending divers. During two dives, learn the proper

techniques and protocols for using surface marker buoys and delayed

surface marker buoys (DSMBs) in the local area. A must for anyone planning

to dive around the coastal waters of Great Britain or further afield.

Peak Performance Buoyancy

Theory Tuesday 14th July; Practical 30th July

Become one with the Fishes! Good buoyancy is the back bone

to all scuba diving. Being neutrally buoyant streamlined and

gliding effortlessly through the water should be the goal of every

diver. The Peak Performance Buoyancy course will help you

achieve this.

Focusing on breath control, trim, equipment streaming and

efficient fining, this is the course that will make a world of

difference to your diving.

Deep Diver (NDAC)

Theory Tuesday 126th July, Practical Sunday 31st July

The lure of the deep. There’s something exciting and mysterious about exploring deeper dive sites while scuba diving. Sometimes it’s a wreck that attracts you below 18 metres/60 feet, and on wall dives it may be a giant fan or sponge.

Whatever it is, to scuba dive with confidence at depths down to 40 metres/130 feet, you should take the PADI Deep Diver Specialty course.

Enriched Air Nitrox

Tuesday 2nd and Thursday 4th August

The PADI Enriched Air Diver course is PADI’s most

popular specialty scuba course. Why? Because

scuba diving with enriched air nitrox gives you more

no decompression time, especially on repetitive

scuba dives. If staying down longer and getting back

in the water sooner sounds appealing, then don’t

hesitate to become an enriched air diver.

Sidemount (Recreational)

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th August

Having scuba tanks on your back isn’t a requirement

for exploring the underwater world. Many scuba divers

have discovered the joy of mounting cylinders on their

sides. Sidemount diving gives you flexibility and

streamlining options. Plus, you don’t have to walk with

heavy cylinders on your back – just enter the water, clip

them on and go. Sound interesting? Sign up for the

PADI Sidemount Diver Specialty course .

Advanced Open Water Diver (Lochaline, Scotland)

Theory Thursday 4th August, Practical 7th, 13th & 14th August

Have your Open Water Qualification but would like to do

more? The Advanced Open Water course is the next step for

you. Over a series of 5 adventure dives, you will further your

diving experience. There is a lot to be gained by doing these

in the sea, which is why we do the advanced course in Oban,

Scotland.

Why not pop in and discuss which adventure dives you would

like to do.

The Theory will take place at Bolton Area Divers. The first Saturday will be in Capernwray and the final two days

will be in Oban, Scotland.

Places on this course are limited, so please let us know sooner rather than later if you would like to join us.

Underwater Navigator Course

Theory Thurs 8th; Practical Saturday 10th

September

Fed up of following fins and want to be the person everyone wants

to follow? The PADI Underwater Navigator course fine-tunes your

observation skills and teaches you to more accurately use your

compass underwater. If you like challenges with big rewards, take

this course and have fun finding your way.

Search and Recovery

Theory Tuesday 6th September; Practical Sunday 11th

September

It happens: People accidentally drop things from docks, off boats or even while

scuba diving. If you’ve ever lost something in the water and wanted to go find

it, then the PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty course is for you. There

are effective ways to search for objects underwater that increase your chances

of success. And there are good and better methods to bring up small, large or

just awkward items. Search and recovery can be challenging, but a whole lot of

fun.

Emergency First Response (First Aid)

Saturday 10th September

Save a life! Learn or refresh vital life-saving primary and secondary care techniques. This

informative but fun one day course could be the difference between life and death.

Emergency First Response Instructor(First Aid)

Saturday 10th & 11th September

During the Emergency First Response Instructor course, you will build on

your skill as an Emergency Responder and focus on developing your

instructional abilities to teach these skills to others.

The Instructor course provides you with the additional training necessary

to teach the Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR), Secondary

Care (First Aid), Care for Children, CPR & AED courses.

Through a multi-media approach of independent study, classroom

sessions and practical teaching assignments, you learn how to teach

Emergency First Response courses.

This could be the start of a new career for you!

Rescue Diver

Sat 15th, Sat 22nd, Sun 23rd October

Probably the most fun and rewarding course you can do!

During this course you will begin to look at the what ifs in

diving and learn how to respond to them in a fast and

effective manner. From spotting the early signs of an

uncomfortable diver before anything has gone wrong to

responding to a panicking diver underwater you will learn

how to react and deal with Diving emergencies swiftly and

effectively.

Night Diver

Theory Tuesday 18th October; Practical Wednesday 19th October & Wednesday

26th October

Who turned out the lights? Diving at night must be dark

and scary right? Most people who take part in night

dives find that they are some of the most serine and

peaceful dives that they do and night diving fast

becomes a favourite type of dive for them. The sun

going down is often the signal for many species to

become active and reefs and wrecks a like take on a

whole new feel and atmosphere as the night shift takes

over. Over a series of dives on this course you will learn

how to dive safely at night, how to communicate with

your buddy in the dark and what kit you should use as a

minimum whilst diving at night.

Divemaster Course

Enquire for Dates

Love scuba diving? Want to share it with others

on a whole new level? Take the PADI Divemaster

course and do what you love to do as a career.

Scuba divers look up to divemasters because they

are leaders who mentor and motivate others. As a

divemaster, you not only get to dive a lot, but also

experience the joy of seeing others have as much

fun diving as you do.

Assistant Instructor Courses

Enquire for Dates

The PADI Assistant Instructor course is the next level up

full PADI Instructor, this is the next exciting step for you.

We have demand for this course already and it will be

running soon. We are hoping to confirm exact dates around

your availability. If you would like to learn more and to book

on, pop into the Dive Centre or give us a call on 01204

394441.

Handicapped Scuba Association - Buddy Course Get Involved, Spread the Excitement. Do you know someone, a friend or family member with disabilities you would like to involve in scuba diving? Do you welcome the challenge of learning about disabilities, accessibility issues and how to dive with people who have disabilities? The HSA "Dive Buddy Program" offers Open Water Scuba Divers this opportunity to expand their underwater world by sharing it with divers with disabilities.

The course combines classroom instruction followed by confined water and open water exercises, designed to simulate disabilities. In "acting out" the disabilities, Dive Buddies actually experience what it is like to be a mobility or sight-impaired diver, and the special considerations needed when planning and diving with them. A sensitizing and often surprising revelation for even the most experienced diver!

During 8 hours of interactive lectures you will be:

• Introduced to several disability types and acquired specialized knowledge usually found only in medical environments

• Accessibility issues and travelling for people with disabilities

• Special considerations for diving with a disability

During 5 hours of Confined Water training you will simulate paraplegia, quadriplegia, amputee and blind divers, performing skills that are technically problematic for these disability types. (Don't worry, we do give breaks!!!) Through these training scenarios you will learn to dive and solve problems differently, developing new skills that are needed to safely Scuba dive with divers with disabilities.

During 4 hours of Open Water training you will be in a team of three, role playing as a Primary Dive Buddy with two buddies, one paraplegic and the other blind. You will rotate through all three roles. This training will provide you with specialized knowledge necessary for safely planning and diving with divers with disabilities.

As a Dive Buddy Candidate you will receive Dive Buddy Course materials that are a subset of the Instructor Training Course materials. What this means for you is, as an HSA certified Dive Buddy you will receive nearly as much information and skill training as an instructor, except the training focuses on recreation, not instruction!

We will be starting this course very soon. If you are interested, please pop into the Dive Centre or give us a call if you are interested in taking part. We be arranging dates to suit everyone on the course.

ase contact Shereen at the Dive Centre if you are interested in any of these courses.

UPCOMING TRIPS – You Can’t Afford to Miss! For the full list of all trips, look at the club website at www.boltonareadivers.co.uk/bad_club/events.php

If you’re interested in joining us on any of the club trips or want more information give either contact the trip organiser or give Shereen a call on 01204 394441 or email [email protected], or just come down to the club meeting. (See front page for date of next meeting).

We have a lot of Club dives planned for 2016

and we haven’t finished yet!

With all the dives, we try to make clear the level

of experience required for each one. This

enables you to select the dives that are right for

you, developing your experience at a pace that

is right for you.

Some things to look out for:

SDP – Scapa Development Programme

Experience: These are dives for Divers with UK Sea Diving experience.

Qualifications: Divers on these dives should hold the PADI Deep Diver qualification, Enriched Air Nitrox qualification, have and are able to use a DSMB and Reel. These experience dives are designed to run alongside the PADI Tec 40 programme.

Equipment: As many of the dives will be deeper to prepare you for Scapa, your standard dive kit should include: a good torch and a backup, a computer and a backup, a DSMB and reel and a backup, an independent air source that you are comfortable using (twinset, sidemount or single and a stage).

DDP – Diver Development Programme

Experience: These dives are for Divers that are Open Water qualified or above. You do not need to have any UK Sea diving experience. You will get this experience by coming on these dives. The aim of these dives is to allow you to increase your diving experiences in a friendly group.

Qualifications: Divers will need to be Open Water Diver qualified or above. Where dive sites may be more challenging, there may be a requirement for divers to be Advanced Open Water qualified and have and be able to use a DSMB and Reel. This will be made clear at the time of booking the dives.

Equipment: You will need to have standard UK Open Water Diver kit. This can be your own kit or be hired from Bolton Area Divers (current cost for cub members is £20 per day for full kit). You will need to have your own Dive Computer and Torch for all dives. This is not included in the standard kit hire. Please ask at the Dive Centre for more details.

PADI Women’s Dive Day – Capernwray and Anglesey

Saturday 16th July & Sunday 17th July

(Men also allowed ☺)

(Trip Organiser: Shereen Roberts, 01204 394441, email: [email protected])

You may be aware that PADI run an International Women’s Diving Day. This only started last year and was a great success in raising the profile of women in what is still a male-dominated activity. This year, Bolton Area Divers are looking to get involved by making a weekend of it. More details can be found here http://www.padi.com/women-dive/ I would definitely like to be involved.

The plan is:

Saturday 16th July – meet at Capernwray for a 9am start. We will do one dive as a group first thing. Anyone not on the Rescue Diver course, then has the rest of the day free to get in one or two more dives. Those ladies on the Rescue Diver course, we will be putting your new-found Rescue skills to the test in a series of scenarios in the afternoon.

Sunday 17th July – shallow shore diving from Porth Dafarch, Anglesey.

This is great way to get into UK Sea Diving and will be suitable for all levels of experience.

We will meet at Porth Dafarch at 11am. High water is at 12.30, so we will aim to get a nice couple of dives in around this time.

We will have a BBQ on the beach after all the diving is done.

Please let me know if you would like to join us [email protected] or give me a call on 01204 394441 for more details.

Due to the feedback we have received in relation to this, Men are also welcome to attend the dives. It will be nice to have some valet Diving for us ladies …………. ☺

We run these dives every month and they are open to all BAD Club members.

This club dive is suitable for all levels of experience. If you are newly qualified or more experienced, come along and join in the fun!

Basking Shark Trip, Coll – August 10th – August 14th

(Trip Organiser: Yo Han Cha, 01204 394441, email: [email protected])

There is just one last space available on this trip. It promises to be a very exciting one ☺

We are working with Basking Shark Scotland to give us the best opportunities to spend time with these beautiful creatures. As they are plankton-eaters, they pose no risk to us at all.

The general plan is to drive to Oban in time to catch the 07:15 ferry to Coll on Thursday morning. (Suggest drive up Wednesday and stay in Oban overnight).

Spend Thursday on the island, with an option of a night dive, which looks very impressive (see their website)

Early morning start on the Friday and Saturday mornings, for full days looking for / snorkelling / with the Basking Sharks.

We will arrive back in time to join in day 2 of the BIG BAD Diving weekend, shore diving on the Sunday. The cost of the bunk house accommodation on Coll and the boat and the two full days is £375pp.

This also includes an evening / night dive on Coll under the flood-lit Pier. This looks amazing.

If you would like more details on this trip, please contact Shereen on 01204 394441.

Return back to Oban arriving around 11pm Saturday to join the rest of the group headed up for the BIG BAD Diving weekend in Oban.

BIG BAD Diving Weekend, Oban - 13th – 14th August Diver Development Programme

(Trip Organiser: Shereen Roberts, 01204 394441, email: [email protected])

Every year, we run the Big BAD Diving weekend. Usually, we run this in Wales. This year, we thought we would try something a bit different and run it in Scotland.

It is a weekend for all the family, so please bring everyone along with you for a cracking weekend!

For non-divers, there are lots of things to see and do around Oban. Have a look at the local tourism site for ideas:

http://www.oban.org.uk/activities/

http://www.explore-oban.com/what-to-do/

The evenings will be very social with a restaurant booked for everyone (depending on numbers). Details

will be confirmed nearer the time.

We also usually run it over the bank holiday weekend in August but that often does not work for people who already have plans. So, we are bringing it forward a bit and having it on the second weekend in August instead.

There will be opportunities for shore diving and boat diving, depending on what you prefer to do.

The Shore diving will be quite shallow with loads of life. This will be suitable for those who are Open Water Diver qualified and above.

Shore Diving will be available on Saturday and Sunday. There may also be an option for an evening shore dive on the Friday night too.

The Boat diving will be on the Sunday and will be heading out to dive some wrecks and / or reefs (exact details to be confirmed nearer the time).

Spaces on the boat dives are limited and the boat is nearly full already. If you would like to boat dive on the Sunday, please contact Shereen at the Dive Centre asap.

If you would like more details and to put your name on the list, please let us know on 01204 394441.

Accommodation will either be Caravans if you have your own or Guest House . The approximate cost of this is £40 pppn.

Camping may also be available if you prefer.

Please let us know your accommodation choices asap as they get booked up fast and then the prices go right up.

BIG HOLIDAY – Red Sea, 20th August 2016 **Limited Availability**

£1250 Full Board (Trip Organiser: Matt McMinn, 01204 394441, email: [email protected])

Our next Red Sea Trip is now booked for the 20th to 27th August 2016.

The trip will be on the 35m steel hulled Luxury Red Sea Livaboard the MV Mistral.

Following recent posts on Facebook the Itinerary chosen is the Wrecks and Reefs itinerary out of Hurghada. (Due to problems in Sharm, flights and boats have been diverted to Hurghada until issues are resolved).

Trip Duration

All of our Wrecks & Reefs trips run for 7 nights with 7 nights spent on board your liveaboard.

There are normally 4 dives a day (3 day dives + 1 night dive) apart from on your first and last day. There are around 21 dives on an average week but this can vary depending on local weather conditions.

Arrival

Once you have been picked up from the airport you will be taken to the port to board your liveaboard. If you are making your own way to the harbour we ask that you not board before 18:00. There will be a full welcome briefing on arrival and you can set your kit up. If you have prepaid any rental equipment this will be given to you on arrival. There is then your first dinner and you can settle in for the evening. The boat will not leave harbour on this first night.

After the boat permissions are sorted, the boat will depart the next morning and the check dive will be made.

A normal Wrecks & Reefs itinerary will dive at the following areas but the exact dive sites and order will vary week by week depending on what people enjoy, where the best sightings have been and reflect diver experience levels.

Abu Nuhas

This is one of the best concentrations of wreck diving in the Red Sea with the newest and oldest wrecks you will visit on this itinerary. The Giannis D is always a popular dive with a brilliant (and easy!) engine room penetration. You can swim easily through the corridors and into the rooms as they have been cleared without entanglement risk. Head to the Carnatic for the oldest wreck - the iron ribs are iconic and the wreck is smothered in marine life. You may also dive the Chrisoula K.

Gubal

Gubal island lies to the north of Abu Nuhas and has some excellent sites to explore. The barge is a wonderful afternoon and night dive with it's resident humongous resident moray, scorpion fish and stone fish. Bluff Point is a relaxing drift dive - and always chances to see dolphin. On a flat day you can dive the Ulysses, a smaller but similar aged vessel to the Carnatic. On the west of Gubal is the Rosalie Moller. Due to the depth of this wreck it is not always offered but if you do dive it, cut through the swathes of glass fish to find a fantastic 2nd World War wreck.

Around the Thistlegorm

Around Shaab Mahmoud you find 3 classic dive sites. The Thistlegorm needs little introduction to UK divers - sunk during the 2nd World War, she was laden with munitions and with several dives (including a night dive) to explore the holds, decks and environs, you will discover just why this ranks as one of Egypt's top dives. At Shag Rock you can enjoy both an incredible hard coral reef dive (often with turtles) and the small but adorable wreck of the Kingston. Another top reef dive is Small Crack - here a spilt in the reef allows divers to

dive between the outer reef and inner lagoon. The crack is packed with marine life and it can be a good place to see zebra sharks.

Ras Mohammed

If you visit the Northern Red Sea you have to dive Ras Mohammed! There are too many outstanding sites to mention but the best include Shark & Yolanda, Anemone City, Ras Gozlani and the wreck of the Dunraven - after you finish on the wreck head onto the reef to look for stone fish. The drop off in Ras Mohammed will take your breath away and you always have a good chance to see sharks or eagle rays cruising along the walls.

Tiran

Jackson, Thomas, Woodhouse and Gordon are the 4 reefs that make up the Tiran system and each has it's own individual charm. The coral gardens at Jackson are some of the most lavish you will find in Egypt and the wall stunning. Thomas is famous for the deep canyon but there are also some large sea fans to admire. Woodhouse is always a lovely drift dive, with plenty of nooks and crannies along the wall where you can find macro life. Gordon is distinctive for the tar barrels that are slowly becoming part of the reef - a vast school of banner fish live on the drop off. This is a perfect afternoon or night dive.

Disembarkation

You will normally leave the boat after breakfast on your last day and be transferred to a hotel for the day. Your final transfer will take you to the airport for your return flight home..

The trip is limited to 20 people and the boat can fill quickly.

Let us know if you want to join us on this incredible trip.

Cost (full board) for the whole week is £1250.

There will be more details for this nearer the time.

Farnes Trip (1) – 10th and 11th September ** TRIP FULL **

£120 Boat and Accommodation (Trip Organiser: Phil Wyatt, 01204

394441, email:

[email protected])

Dive trips to the Farne Islands are always very popular due to the Seal interaction. You need to get in quick!

There will be 2 dives each day. The aim is usually one wreck dive and one dive with the Seals each day. The Skipper is Billy Shields from Sovereign Diving.

Accommodation will be bunkhouse style with breakfast included on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Farnes Trip (2) – 24th and 25th September ** 2 Places Available ** Diver Development Programme

(Trip Organiser: Shereen Roberts, 01204 394441, email: [email protected])

Again opportunities for wreck diving and hopefully some great Seal interaction too.

Same plan for 2 dives per pay from the boat.

To do these dives you will need to be Advanced Open Water qualified, have some UK Sea diving experience and have and be able to use your own DSMB and reel. You will also need your own good torch and dive computer.

Accommodation is B and B a few miles from the harbour.

St. Abbs – 1st and 2nd October ** 4 Places Available **

£150 for 4 boat dives and 2 nights Accommodation (Trip Organiser: Jan Moore, 01204 394441, email: [email protected])

This will be 2 boat dives each day (Saturday and Sunday).

Diving in St. Abbs is in the centre of a marine park – so it is a no-take zone . The aquatic life exquisite. Wolf fish are probably the main ‘stars’ that people try to find.....also very cute small pink pipe fish. St Abbs is also home to one of UK’s signature dives – Cathedral Rock. This sites offer a lot of variety and include swim throughs, deep gullies and stunning anemones.

Maximum depth will be around 25m, so ideal for Advanced Open Water Divers. As it is a sea dive, you will need your own DSMB and Reel and be comfortable using it. You will also need your own decent torch and dive computer.

The boat is a very stable catamaran with a head and plenty of kitting up space. Equipment can be left on between dives. There is a hoist to facilitate loading and unloading all handled by the Skipper.

Accommodation is bunk house style. There are good drying facilities for any damp or wet clothing and the water is always hot for showers. Bedding is provided but you need to take towels

A filled breakfast bap is available at an extra charge of around £3. There are limited self-catering facilities – e.g. kettle, toaster and fridge but no oven!

PREVIOUSLY RUN CLUB TRIPS – THE WRITE UPS

A whole lot of diving has been going on since the last Rubber Review!

Shark Dive – Blue Planet Aquarium Sunday 27th March

(Trip Organiser: Gareth Thompson)

A couple of years ago Simon Grimshaw gave a talk at a club meeting on the topic of shark diving. Not the being fastened inside a cage and bait dropped to attract them near, but proper diving in their natural environment, where your behaviour in the water is what keeps you safe. I was in awe of his stories but I still doubted that I would ever have the nerve to do it myself. I genuinely had no idea how I would react when faced with a real shark.

So when I got to lead the recent club dive to the Blue Planet Aquarium, and the chance to dive with sharks, I jumped at it. The majority of my diving has been in UK waters so I’ve never dived near a shark. I can clearly remember as a child being in a small fishing boat off the west coast of Scotland, surrounded by basking shark fins. With Jaws fresh in the memory, and several fins circling us, I can clearly remember being convinced that I was soon to be a snack!

Matt and Shereen both found it hilarious that I was nervous about diving with sharks. After I promised to try and not punch a shark I was nominated as dive leader! Fortunately for me Tracy Richmond Bailey was even more nervous about the dive so she ended up being the one everybody chose to wind up! Thanks Tracy!

We arrived at Blue Planet around lunch time, and had a bite to eat in the café. From our table we were able to watch all the sharks and fish. Lucy enjoyed “talking” to the staff divers who were in the tank feeding, using her newly learnt hand signals. We then really enjoyed our tour around the aquarium which took us a couple of hours. There was plenty to see, including reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, sea horses and I would definitely recommend it as a great day out. The underwater tunnel was spectacular, it was the next best thing to actually being in the tank with them.

Sound of Mull – Wreck Diving – 16th and 17th April (Trip Organiser: Dave Burrows)

This was a great weekend of many parts. There were the ‘hard core’ wreck divers, diving the main wrecks in the Sound of Mull. There was the Advanced Open Water course and also the Underwater Archaeology Course divers too.

It was a fantastic weekend and we were very luck with the weather.

We arrived on the Friday afternoon following quite a journey. The length of the journey was a small price to pay for the beauty of the views. Once we crossed on the ferry, the views were simply stunning.

Based out of Loch Aline, we had a great weekend. On the Friday afternoon shore / check dive, the viability was fantastic. It was like diving abroad!

There were a few options for this dive. The pleasure divers dived a wall to around 30m, teaming with life. Everyone was buzzing.

Having everything so close together made the weekend really easy logistically. The accommodation and Dive Centre are all together.

The accommodation is self-catering. Both evenings, our nominated Chef, Dave Burrows made some lovely food for everyone. He has since been nominated to do this on all future trips. A victim of your own success there Dave

There was also a very interesting presentation on the Saturday night by Annabel. It was really interesting to learn more about the archaeology and historical significance of some of the local wrecks.

On both Saturday and Sunday, we were all out nice and early for a full day diving.

The Divers on the Advanced Open Water course dived The John Preston, Duart Point, SS Rondo and some really nice reefs with lots of life. We were really lucky to be able to dive the protect sites with the Archaeology students. It’s not every dive you descend down to 8 meters and find a Cannon straight away! Great dives.

The Wreck divers dived The Shuna, The Hispania, SS Rondo and The Thesis. The smiles on everyone’s faces showed what a great time they all had.

The Archaeology students put their new found skills to the test and founds lots of interesting things on their dives.

NDAC - 24th April Scapa Development Programme, Diver Development Programme

(Trip Organiser: Shereen Roberts)

NDAC – The National Diving and Activity Centre, is based in Chepstow, about 3 ½ hour drive from Bolton.

Malta 2-9th May (pleasure and training) Scapa Development Programme, Diver Development Programme

(Trip Organiser: Matt McMinn)

Well, where to start with this one! Malta is one of those Dive destinations that just has so much to offer.

Following a ridiculously early start on the Monday morning, all 28 of us met in the bar at the Airport (where else!) and started off our Dive Holiday as we meant to go on.

Our lovely Dale ran a bit late for the plane (they even unloaded his bags and had to replace them again!), Anna (his better half) was not amused!

Once there and sorted with Jeeps, Accommodation and dive kit sorted, we were off for a check dive. Well, some of us were anyway!

The rest of the week consisted of lots of diving. The weather was not the best we have had there at this time of the year but every day was divable. Towards the end of the week, we got in some great dives of the Um El Faroud, Cirkewwa, P31 and some ventured over to Gozo to dive the Blue Hole.

A couple of adventurous non-divers in the group enjoyed the Horse riding in Malta. They had a great time.

In the evenings there was quite a bit of ‘sociable drinking’ going on.

The company was fantastic, the diving was great and the whole holiday was great fun.

We go to Malta at least once a year and are aiming to start going more often.

There is a possibility of a November trip this year. If you fancy it, please let us know and we can start getting more details together.

Capernwray Club Dive 11th June Diver Development Programme

(Trip Organisers: Jeff Bond, Dale Foster, Zac Hawkins)

We had a very well-attended Capernwray club dive recently, with around 30 Divers. It was great to see such a

nice, supportive mix of experienced and newly qualified Divers there. It was also great experience for Sarah,

one of our Divemaster Candidates as she led some of the Dives. Nice work Sarah

Following the briefing, every split into smaller groups and enjoyed some great dives.

We run these dives every month and they

are open to all BAD Club members.

This club dive is suitable for all levels of

experience. If you are newly qualified or

more experienced, come along and join in

the fun!

For our newer divers, there will be more

experienced divers there to lend a hand as

you increase your diving experience.

Swanage – 1st – 3rd July

Diver Development Programme

(Trip Organiser: Shereen Roberts)

After reading about how great diving in Swanage is in all the Diving magazines, we decided a Dive trip was needed to check it out for ourselves.

This is the first time Bolton Area Divers Club have organised a trip to Swanage. It did not disappoint.

We arrived on the Friday and checked into our accommodation; a bunk house. Really well presented with great facilities. Right in the town centre and just a 5 minute walk to the Pier.

Swanage Pier is lovely. Really well maintained with all the facilities you need. It is very well set up for Divers. It has a Dive Centre for air fills, toilets, showers, car parking and trollies to help you move your gear to the water’s edge.

Following some food in a nice local pub, we all had an early night in anticipation of a full day diving on the Saturday.

Everyone was up early (thanks to the alarm call from the Sea Gulls). We packed the van and were off to the Pier for an early morning bimble.

The life under the Pier was incredible. Everywhere you looked, there was something. Spider Crabs, Coweries, Scallops, Velvet Swimming Crabs, Wrasse, Flat Worms, Lobster ……. And so the list continues. With a maximum depth of 5 metres, this is a dive site suitable for everyone.

After a surface interval and some air fills, we were off out on the boat to dive a wreck called the Fleur. An old wooden fishing trawler. Unfortunately, at the time, the current was running a bit fast, so we opted for a nice reef dive instead.

The votes were in ….. it was fish and chips on the beach for a late lunch. (It’s a hard life!)

On the way back to the accommodation to unpack the van, half the group got lost on the 5 minute walks back but managed to find a pub to seek shelter from the glorious sunshine

We found them a couple of hours later drinking Piddle ………

Later that night, with lots of glowing faces (should of used more sun cream) we retreated in anticipation of another early start.

23

Up again with the Sea Gulls (well, everyone apart from Sean, who doesn’t like early starts!), we loaded the van again and were off to join the que for the carpark.

The Dives on the Sunday were fantastic. The first dive of the day is the one I was most looking forward to; the Valentine Tanks. These are left over from failed attempts in practicing for the D Day Landings. They remain in their resting place in 15 msw, so ideal for Open Water Divers and above. The tanks are quite small but impressive. There are 2 tanks, about 50-60m apart. I would like to say it was our fine navigational skills that let us to the second but we actually just followed a line between the two.

The life was amazing. In just this one dive we saw Lobsters, Dogfish, Ray (pretty big one too!), Edible Crabs, Shrimp, Congas, Starfish, Bib (so many), Wrasse, etc etc …… Whether you are interested in wrecks or aquatic life, this dive cannot disappoint. I would definitely do it again. I will be putting some footage of these dive on the Bolton Area Divers Club Facebook site soon.

The last dive of the day was back on the Fleur. This time there was no current at all. A nice little dive in 13 msw. Ideal for new UK sea divers but you can do the whole wreck in around 10 minutes. Then, launching a DSMB, the plan is usually to go with the drift. However, my buddy and I decided to spend more time investigating all the nooks and crannies of the wreck, searching for squidgy stuff.

We were very lucky with the weather. Blue skies and sunshine always make for a great diving weekend.

A fab weekend with a great bunch of guys and girls.
