l progetto “Tòpoi dell’epoca
medioevale” della classe terza E si
propone di passare in rassegna seppur
sinteticamente, i “luoghi letterari”, le
parole-chiave che hanno
caratterizzato almeno in
parte, la visione del
mondo nel Medioevo.
The project "Medieval age Keywords" elaborated
by the students of the class 3E, aims to review,
although briefly, “the literary sites” and the key-
words that have characterized, at least in part, the
worldview in the Middle Ages.
In this project work we have tried to combine our
language and presentation skills, with abilities acquired
through the textual analysis.
Our language skills in fact are not an end in themselves
nor remain enclosed within the parameters of the Italian
language, but they are reflected in the international
language, English, and in a correspondence with digital
languages.
Le informazioni presenti sono
state da noi analizzate secondo
un’ottica universale che ci ha
permesso di rendere tale lavoro
attuale e di dare vita alle parole
racchiuse in un libro scolastico.
Attraverso la corrispondenza
attuale abbiamo dimostrato nel
contempo il lungo e graduale
percorso di un particolare periodo
storico che ha contribuito a
formare la nostra realtà
soggettiva ed oggettiva.
The information contained in the
processed texts result from
extensive analysis parameters,
which enabled us to make this job
a current one, and give new life to
the words contained in a
schoolbook.
Through the correspondence also
identified in terms of past cultural
heritage and its revival, we showed
at the same time the long and
gradual process of a particular
historical period that contributed to
shape our subjective and objective
reality.
l Medioevo abbraccia un arco di tempo
lunghissimo che convenzionalmente va dal
476 d.C., anno della caduta dell’Impero
Romano d’Occidente, al 1492.
The Middle Ages cover an arc of long time which
conventionally goes from the 476 AD, year of the fall of the
Roman Empire of the West, to the 1492.
barbarici, l’espansione
dell’Islam, la fondazione del
Sacro Romano Impero da parte
di Carlo Magno, l’istituzione del
sistema feudale, la fondazione
del Sacro Romano Impero
germanico ad opera di Ottone I
che riprese il progetto della
renovatio imperii e la nascita
dello Stato della Chiesa.
The Early Middle Ages ( the
Dark Ages), which last from
the 5th to the 11th centuries,
are characterized by a lot of
historical events: the birth of
the Barbarian Kingdoms, the
expansion of the Islamism, the
foundation of Charlemagne‘s
empire, the institution of the
feudal system, the foundation
of the Holy Roman empire of
Germany by Ottone I, who
took again the project of
renovation imperii and the
birth of the Church State.
Dopo l’anno Mille,
invece, si registra una
ripresa economica e
demografica, e sul
piano politico
quest’epoca è
caratterizzata dalla
lotta tra Impero e
Chiesa, dal fenomeno
delle crociate, dalla
nascita dei comuni,
ma soprattutto dalle
monarchie feudali.
After the 11th century,
there is an economic
and demographic
recovery while by the
political point of view,
this age is
characterized by the
war between the
Pope and the king,
the Crusades, the
birth of the
municipalities but
especially by the
feudal monarchies.
a Bibbia, che è il
centro della
rielaborazione del
pensiero antico, viene
trasmessa dalla
cultura medievale
nella traduzione in
latino nel IV sec. d.C.
di San Gerolamo, la
Vulgata. Diventa così
il testo fondamentale
del sapere medievale.
LA CENTRALITA’ DELLA BIBBIA
THE CENTRALITY OF THE BIBLE
The Bible, which is the
center of the reworking
of the ancient thought,
is transmitted by the
medieval culture in the
fourth century A.D, in
the translation into Latin
by St. Jerome, the
Vulgate, and becomes
the fundamental text of
the medieval learning.
The philosophical concept on which the whole medieval culture is
based, is related to neo-Platonism; the physical world is a reflection
of a transcendental reality, and in it we read the divine. Only those
who have faith and know the Bible can find it.
The Bible also contains divine truths, and anticipations of what
will be said in the New Testament. The culture and the history of
man are, therefore, part the divine plan: the Bible becomes the
fundamental text.
La cultura medievale è il risultato
di un processo di
selezione/assimilazione della
paideia classica che la
precedeva.
Decisivo, infatti, è il processo di
assimilazione del patrimonio
greco-romano, ad opera delle
istituzioni monastiche e con il
contributo dei Padri della Chiesa.
CONTRASTO TRA CULTURA MEDIEVALE E
CULTURA CLASSICA
The medieval culture is the
result of a
selection/assimilation of
classical paideia process that
preceded it.
A key factor, in fact, is the
process of assimilation of the
greek-Roman heritage, by the
monastic institutions and with
the contribution of the Fathers
of the Church.
The main problem of the medieval culture derives from comparison
with the tradition, pagan in some features, that we find in Greek and
Latin texts.
Medieval intellectuals, in fact, cannot rely on any spiritual derogation,
and at the same time they perceive that they cannot ignore the
precious classical cultural heritage.
In this perspective a "canon" is defined to select the authors to be
studied, and to catalog the ancient knowledge in texts of an
encyclopaedic type.
Ad incoraggiare i cristiani
ad accogliere i testi
classici, nonostante la
presunta infondatezza di
tante dottrine pagane, è il
filosofo Aurelio Agostino,
nella sua opera
Il valore dei classici.
To encourage Christians to
welcome the classics,
despite alleged
groundlessness of many
pagan doctrines, is the
philosopher Aurelius
Augustine, in his book
The value of the classics.
clero a controllarli.
THE EDUCATION IN THE MIDDLE AGES
Education in the Middle Ages involves the reading of
classical texts, preparatory for the study of sacred texts,
fundamental to the Christian culture.
Between the sixth and seventh centuries Episcopal and
parochial schools were born, they could also be attended
by lay people, but it was the clergy that controlled them.
Le discipline oggetto di studio,
dopo l’istruzione elementare,
sono le arti liberali del trivio e
del quadrivio. La parola e la
memoria sono alla base dello
studio. L’obiettivo della scuola
è quello di formare un
virtuoso adulto differenziando
l’istruzione a seconda del ceto
di appartenenza: al clero e ai
ceti alti spettavano le arti
liberali; al popolo le arti
meccaniche, la theatrica e la
medicina.
The school subjects studied
after primary education were
the liberal arts, the trivium and
the quadrivium.
Speech and memory were the
basis of the study.
The goal of the school was to
train a virtuous adult, by varying
instruction according to the
social class people belonged
to: the clergy and the upper
classes were entitled the liberal
arts; the people the mechanical
arts, theatrica and medicine.
In seguito, sorgono centri di
studio laici e non del tutto
soggetti al controllo del
clero.
In questa fase nel
curriculum studiorum si
registra l’inserimento di
materie specialistiche
cittadine come il diritto.
Later, lay study centers
arose and they were not
fully subjected to the control
of the clergy.
At this stage, in the
curriculum of studies
specialized subjects,
such as law, were
included.
LA SOCIETA’ CORTESE
’ideale di “cortesia” rappresenta uno dei capisaldi
dell’intera letteratura romanza. Si definisce
“cortesia” l’insieme di comportamenti e virtù civili
che concorrono a costituire l’immagine del
cavaliere o della dama:
lealtà, coraggio,
magnanimità.
The ideal of “courtesy” represents one of the cornerstones
of the entire romance literature.
THE COURTLY SOCIETY
«Courtesy» is the set of
behaviors and civic
virtues, like loyalty,
courage, magnanimity,
liberality that concur to
establish the image of
the knight or the lady.
Il cavaliere feudale deve
essere devoto, onesto,
altruista, obbediente e
gentile con le donne.
L’ideale della cortesia
influenza anche il mondo
delle emozioni e dei
sentimenti, in primis
l’amore. Quest’ultimo si
definisce come tensione
verso una passione
autentica, ma sublimata
mediante il vigile controllo
degli istinti naturali.
The feudal knight was
supposed to be devoted,
honest, caring, obedient
and kind to women and
followed a chivalric code,
that is a complex of rituals
and rules. The ideal of
courtesy also affects the
world of emotions and
feelings, first of all love.
Love is striving for a
genuine passion, but
sublimated by the effective
control of natural instincts.
Nell’amore cortese
acquista centralità la
figura femminile che
diventa oggetto
dell’amore assoluto da
parte dell’amante,
ricalcando lo schema
del rapporto feudale
tra vassallo e signore.
In the courtly love the
female figure becomes
central and the object of
an absolute love from
the lover, following the
same pattern of the
feudal relationship
between lord and
vassal.
Medioevo.
LA CERIMONIA DELL’OMAGGIO
The subordination of one individual to another
was the fundamental principle that governed
the bonds and human relationships in the
Middle Ages.
“Essere l’uomo di un
altro” è un’espressione
comune nel vocabolario
feudale, perché esprime
la dipendenza personale
in se stessa: sancita da
un rituale, essa è una
vera e propria cerimonia
che stabilisce vincoli di
tale subalternità.
“Being a man of another
man”, that is “to belong to
another man”, was a
common expression in the
feudal vocabulary, because it
expressed the personal
subordination. Such
subordination was ratified by
a ritual, a real ceremony
which established the bonds
of it.
amicizia.
.
During the ceremony the
subordinate shook hands with
who held the power, a clear
symbol of submission, because
the subordinate offering hands at
the same instant pronounced
some words with which
acknowledged that he was "man"
of the man who stood before him.
Then later the boss and the
subordinate kiss on the mouth as
a symbol of agreement and
friendship.
e rielaborati eventi storici intrecciati a leggende. Intorno
THE EPIC POEM
The epic poems collect stories in verse that tell about historical
events linked to legends.
Around the second half of the eleventh century in northern France,
the chansons de geste were composed. They were written in “Langue
d'Oil”and composed in ten-syllable lines grouped in assonanced
stanzas, called laisses.
epico.
In that period the knights became very cruel because they
wanted to be the leading class and the Church, not being
able to oppose them, used them to fight the Muslims, as
reported in the epic poem.
In ogni ciclo vi è un eroe-
protagonista, una figura
leggendaria con spiccate
caratteristiche simboliche,
In any epic cycle there is a
hero, a legendary character
who has strong symbolic
features and fights, often
dying, against one or more
enemies.
The most important one was the Carolingian epic
cycle, focused on Charlemagne's enterprises.
The Song of Roland is an example of this cycle.
Anticamente essa era
indicata come
stagione della
rinascita della natura
e della creazione del
mondo. Durante il
periodo medievale
entra
nell’immaginario
In ancient times it was
referred to as the
season of the rebirth of
nature and the creation
of the world.
During the medieval period it comes in the literary
imagination as the time that generates in man a longing
to love and cultivate the pleasures.
It is with spring elements that the topical images of the
locus amoenus and that of plazer are built.
stagione in quanto associata agli ambienti campestri.
The various authors then interpret the theme in different ways:
Leopardi, for example, interprets it with a negative connotation;
Petrarch, instead, makes a parallel between the seasons of the year
and the age of the man's life; Pascoli, finally, describes the spring as
related to country activities.
Many English authors wrote about it. A very famous medieval
narrative poem is the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. It starts
with a General Prologue in which the effects that spring produces on
human and nature are described.
IL TEMA DEL CUORE MANGIATO
’invito a mangiare il
cuore del morto per
riceverne le più alte
virtù presuppone
un’interpretazione
simbolica, derivata
da una lunga
tradizione folklorica,
che poneva nel
cuore la sede
dell’energia vitale.
THE THEME OF THE HEART EATEN
Eating the heart of the dead
man to make his own the
virtues of the dead, derived
from a folk tradition, which
placed the life energy
headquarters in the heart.
morto. Questo topos ha origini molto
antiche, rituali e magico-
sacrali e acquista nel tempo
grande rilievo antropologico.
Accanto alle funzioni magico-
rituali e simboliche, il tema,
infine, assume, soprattutto
nella letteratura cavalleresca
e novellistica, un significato
sinistro di odio e di vendetta.
The theme of the heart eaten derives from a superstitious
cannibalism and, the idea of being able to transfer to a living
being the physical and moral qualities of the dead is at the origin
of the cannibalism practiced by some primitive peoples.
The reason for eating the
heart has ancient, ritual and
magical-sacral origins, and
therefore it has a great
anthropological relevance.
Alongside the magic-ritual
and symbolic functions, this
theme takes on a sinister
meaning, of hatred and
revenge, especially in
chivalric romances and
novellas.
THE BALLADS
The popular ballads developed between the XIII and XIV
century: they were usually anonymous, and they were
composed for dancing and singing.
Il linguaggio utilizzato è
semplice e descrive
situazioni e personaggi
convenzionali.
La recitazione, spesso
affidata ad un giullare,
avveniva oralmente e
accompagnata da
musica. La ballata non si
propone scopi morali,
racconta una storia
drammatica nei suoi
risvolti emotivi e sentimentali.
.
The language used was
simple and described
conventional situations
and characters.
They were transmitted
orally often by jesters and
they were accompanied by
music.
The ballad didn’t have a
moral aim, it told a
dramatic story emphasizing
emotions and feelings.
It was composed of four- line rhyming stanzas. The refrain
was a repeated verse or a group of repeated verses.
The medieval ballad presented real characters, but also
supernatural creatures.
