Agenda
August 2009
• Point – treated as individual observations. Will be shown with defined point symbol, layer, and color.
• Line – instantly makes available a String Identifier field. Points that have the same Code and String Identifier will be “strung” together as line work in real time.
• Area – same as Line. However after three points, TopSURV will automatically and constantly close the figure.
Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
Three Unique Types of Codes• When creating a descriptor code in TopSURV, you have the option of
declaring a feature type of either Point, Line, or Area.

Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
• To take full advantage of automatic line work functionality within TopSURV, it is efficient (and more common) to stop and create / standardize on a Code Library prior to going to the field.
• Two common scenarios are to:– Create a new Code Library
– Use an existing Code Library
Field Preparation
August 2009
Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
Field Preparation
• Whereas, if a company already has existing CAD Standards (most common), the goal will be to either convert to an XML format or create manually once in either TopSURV for Personal Computer, Topcon Tools, or SurveyMaster.
• In the case of creating a new Code Library from scratch, the Global Feature CodeXML file available from the Topcon Support site is great starting point.

Global Feature Code
• Save XML file of sample Code Library to your computer.
• Transfer to a Topcon Field Controller using ActiveSync or to an external SD memory card.
• Intent is to make available for TopSURV on a field controller.
August 2009

• From the TopSURV main menu, tap the Import icon and select From File to begin the process if importing a Code Library into the field job.
• Verify that the Data type is Code Library and Format is set to Topcon XML.

• Navigate to and select the XML file TopSURVCodes.
• All codes, attributes, full descriptions, layers, line types, colors, and point symbols will be brought in to the current TopSURV job.
• To check that this file import performed as expected, tap the Jobicon.

• Tap the Edit Job icon and select Codes to review all codes in the current TopSURV job.
• There you will see all Codes that were initially made in the office in preparation for expected field work.

• The Code Library is now standardized between office CAD Standards and field data collection software…a bridge of efficiency.
Standardization Between Field and Office
August 2009
Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
• To streamline routine work flows, it is common to declare that the Code Library XML file be used for all future TopSURV field jobs.
• Tap the Configure icon and select Global.
• Within the Code File field, tap the Browse button.

• Navigate to and select the XML file TopSURVCodes.
• All codes, attributes, full descriptions, layers, line types, colors, and point symbols will automatically be standardized in all future TopSURV jobs on that field controller.

• To pause and verify that this global declaration performs as expected, it is as easy as quickly making a new TopSURV and checking that all codes are automatically available for data collection.
• From the main menu, tap the Job icon and select New Job to create an empty job.
• Declare a job name and tap the Finish button.

• From the TopSURV main menu, go to Survey / Topo to begin collecting data.
• Tap the down arrow within the Code pull down menu to see a listing of all descriptor codes currently available within the TopSURV job.
Using Descriptor Codes

• TopSURV will display all descriptor codes available within that job.
• Along with the functional Code name, you will also see a Full Description.
• For example, the Code of CP is also further described as Control Point.
Using Descriptor Codes
August 2009
Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
• Notice that the icon to the left of the Code field changes graphically depending on the type of code that is selected (Point, Line, or Area).
• Once a Code of either a Line or Area type is selected, the String Identifier field is instantly made available to begin “stringing” points together as line work in real time.

• In cases where a new code is declared while in the field, TopSURV offers an immediate opportunity to fully define and add to the job’s Code Library.

• Working your way down the Code screen, you can add a Full Description, Feature Type (Point, Line, or Area), Layer, Color, and Point Symbol.
• With this new code fully defined and now added to your job’s Code Library, you have the opportunity to export from TopSURV back to the office.

• To begin generating code driven line work, simply select an existing code that is defined to be either an Area or Line feature type. For example, use the Code of EP – Edge of Pavement.
• The String Identifier field will instantly appear.

String Identifier
August 2009
Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
• For this example, the code of EP and string identifier of 1 will be used.
• TopSURV will “string” points together with line work so long as they have the same Code and String Identifier.

Code Library Usage
Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
• By starting out in the office and compiling a Code Library (once), many doors open while in the field with TopSURV.
• With little to no extra effort, all field data is now collected on the same layers, with the same point symbols and colors, and same line types as in the office.
• This now becomes effective communication between field and office teams.
August 2009
Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
• However, a mistake was made in the field. The last point collected was assigned the wrong string identifier.
• Instead of 1, the last point shot on the back of curb (number 110) mistakenly has a String Identifier of 2.
• Therefore, line work is not connected to this ending point.
Edit Existing Line Work• In this example,
sequential shots were taken along the same Back of Curb.
• Therefore, they have the common Code of BOC and all have the same String Identifier of 1.

August 2009

• Rather than taking another shot and overwriting the existing point numbered 110, you have the easier option of simply correcting the String Identifier.
• Tap the Context Menu (Topcon logo at top left) and select Edit Points.
Edit Existing Line Work
August 2009

• However it’s String Identifier is incorrectly entered as 2. It should be 1.
• To fix, select point number 110 and tap the Edit button.
Edit Existing Line Work• Notice that the point
numbered 110 has a code of BOC like the other points measured prior to it.
• It was taken along the same back of curb.

• To edit the existing line work in your TopSURV job, it is as easy as changing the incorrect String Identifier from 2 to 1 and tapping the OK button.
• The points list will now show the change that you have made.
Edit Existing Line Work
August 2009
Code Driven Line Work with TopSURV
• By tapping the Close button, you will instantly return to the Topo screen to resume data collection in the field.
• Notice that the job’s line work was automatically updated.
• The existing back of curb line work now correctly ends at point numbered 110 with a simple edit of an existing point.
