RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE G-d “And you shall have them for totafot between your eyes, and a sign upon your arm…” Shemot 13:17 We know well by now, that this selection from the Torah is the scriptural basis for the mitzvah of Teffilin. While it seems clear as to what was to rest on the arm, the word “totafot” is interpreted as being “frontlets”. However, one of the foundations that may have helped our ancestors unwind this unusual mitzvah, is found in the wording itself. The word ‘Totafot’ is plural, therefore it has been read as “frontlets”. But the Teffilin that we place on our arm is mentioned in the singular. For this reason when you study a pair of Teffilin you will notice that the one worn on the head has four carved out sections, or divisions to the box. But the one for the arm is a solid, single “bayit”, or box. Therefore, the head Teffilin has four parchments within, and the arm just one. RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE

G-d “And you shall have them for totafot between your eyes, and a sign upon your arm…” Shemot 13:17

We know well by now, that this selection from the Torah is the scriptural basis for the mitzvah of Teffilin.
