TORCH----- SEPTEMBER 2013 -----
What does success mean to you?
Success is something that takes on a number of forms and presents itself as everything from a great month of production to bringing in quality recruits to climbing the Company ladder. One of the great things about a career with Liberty National is that success not only occurs with our own, personal accomplishments, but also when our work has a profound impact on the people we serve every day.
I know it might be easy to lose sight of the importance of what we do when we get caught up in the day to day operations of recruiting, getting leads, and closing the sale. But as Life Insurance Awareness Month is here to remind us, this profession is one that has significant effects on individuals and families who experience life’s tragedies.
Back when Agents delivered claim checks, if you had that remarkable opportunity to deliver a check to a grieving widow or a family reeling from the loss of a loved one, you know exactly what I mean when I say this profession matters. If you haven’t had that experience yet, talk to someone who has or look online at our Agent testimonials so you can better understand the importance and necessity of what we do. Know that the coverage you offer could one day make the difference in a family keeping their home or their kids going to college. Know that it is our endeavor to make it easier for people during their darkest hours, and it is because of our Agents and our products that so many have avoided financial devastation.
According to LIMRA, 30 percent of U.S. households have no life insurance at all, and 50 percent say they need more life insurance*. When you consider the fact that virtually everyone needs life insurance, these statistics are pretty alarming! But they’re also good news for us. We have a huge opportunity to begin shrinking these numbers and meeting the needs of individuals and families around the country. In fact, I’d say we have an obligation to help people prepare for the unexpected tragedies that happen every day.
So remember this simple but profound fact: what you do matters. Life insurance fills a very real need in our society, one too often overlooked and neglected. It certainly doesn’t make up for the loss of loved ones (nothing does), but it can give those left behind a much needed financial gift to help them carry on with their lives.
We’ve all heard the saying that nothing is certain but death and taxes, and with millions of households unprepared for death’s financial burden, I’d say you have your work cut out for you. And knowing
you have a huge market to conquer with countless families to help, I hope you’re ready to put your heart into this important vocation.
This career and its Opportunity of a Lifetime can allow you to achieve all your professional dreams and more, and make a better life for you and your family. Your success with LNL can come by increasing production numbers, by taking on a new position with new responsibilities, or by building your team and promoting training and vision. But the part about this career that perhaps carries the most weight is knowing you’re making a difference in people’s lives. An ordinary day of work for you could be life-changing for one of your customers … and that, to me, is the ultimate success.
You’ve chosen a great place to be, so make it count, and always remember there’s a valuable reason why we do what we do.

Why I Do What I Do
Chris GrahamAgency OwnerHouston, TXlibertynational-graham.com
At Liberty National, if you’ve had the life-changing experience of seeing a new widow receive a check, or you’ve been thanked by a policyholder’s child who can still receive higher education after the loss of a parent, you never forget the experience. At the end of the day, we do what we do to provide coverage to countless individuals and families because we care and can offer consumers some of the financial protection they need.
Our products help protect Middle America’s financial future. I’ve seen our products help save a family’s home after the loss of the breadwinner, help cancer patients afford to travel across the country for treatment, and help household bills get paid when our customers miss work due to illness or an accident. We have the opportunity to help people in the darkest moments of their lives.
Think about it. Do you remember the salesman who you bought your last car from? Do you remember who you bought your mattress from? Most likely, no, you don’t. But would you remember the face of a Liberty National Agent who sold you a policy that later helped pay for your loved one’s final expenses, your child’s education, and your daily living expenses?
The reward and fulfillment that comes with offering a glimmer of hope to families after a loss is unlike anything else. As an Agency Owner, I get to provide others with the same opportunity that was shared with me. I get to help others build a career in this industry so they can enjoy a nice living, while truly helping financially protect Americans with life insurance. Why do you do what you do?
Before I was part of Liberty National, my pay was topped out. I was as far as I could go in the retail industry, and I knew a career in sales would allow me to increase my income. When I saw the opportunity at Liberty National for not only a better paycheck, but the ability to build real wealth through renewals, it was an easy decision.
I urge you to advance or climb your career ladder sooner rather than later. The Company provides systems that have proven effective, and it’s our job to utilize those systems daily to enable success. One of the best parts of my career is watching the transformation of people who come into this industry knowing nothing about insurance to later become successful Agents, Supervising Agents, Agency Directors, and Agency Owners. We all get to earn the type of living we deserve at Liberty National.
Whatever effort you put into this career, you will get back tenfold. Believe in yourself and the opportunity Liberty National offers. Work hard consistently, and this Company will change your life.
This month as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the LIFE Foundation’s Life Insurance Awareness Month, remember why you do what you do, and feel proud of the impact you have on others’ lives.
I get to help others build a career in this industry so they can enjoy a nice living, while truly helping financially protect Americans with life insurance. Why do you do what you do?

From John Maxwell’s The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership
• ‘When to lead’ is just as important as ‘what to do’ and ‘where to go’
• Only the right action at the right time brings success
Timing is often the difference between success and failure. Every time a leader makes a move, there are four possible outcomes that depend on the timing:
The Wrong Action at the Wrong Time Leads to Disaster – Take the wrong action at the wrong time and both your people and your leadership suffer.
The Right Action at the Wrong Time Brings Resistance – If you take the right action at the wrong time, you may still be unsuccessful, because the people you lead can become resistant.
The Wrong Action at the Right Time is a Mistake – the greatest mistake an entrepreneur makes is knowing when to cut his losses or when to increase his investment to maximize gains, but taking the wrong action to accomplish them.
The Right Action at the Right Time Results in Success – When the right leader and the right timing come together an organization achieves its goals and reaps incredible rewards.
THE LAW OF TIMING #19
Good leadership timing requires:
• Understanding – Leaders must have a firm grasp on the situation.
• Maturity – If leaders’ motives aren’t right, their timing will be off.
• Confidence – People follow leaders who know what must be done.
• Decisiveness – Wishy-washy leaders create wishy-washy followers.
• Experience – If leaders don’t possess experience, they need to gain wisdom from others who do possess it.
• Intuition – Timing often depends on intangibles, such as momentum and morale.
• Preparation – If current conditions aren’t right, leaders must create favorable conditions.

Reading the situation right and knowing what to do are not enough to make you succeed in leadership. If you want your Agency to move forward, you must pay attention to timing. Only the right action at the right time brings success … and no leader can escape the Law of Timing.

Know the Facts!*• Among households likely to buy life insurance in the next
year, 35 percent report they haven’t bought it because no one has approached them about it.
• Of consumers who believe they need life insurance, 86 percent haven’t purchased it because they think it’s too expensive.
• 41 percent of shoppers say life events such as marriage, having children, buying a home, etc., are the motivating factors to buy life insurance.
• Fifty percent of U.S. households (58 million) say they need more life insurance.
• 30 percent of U.S. households have no life insurance, and only 44 percent have individual life insurance.
Why should Agents sell life insurance? Because everyone needs it!
Agents help consumers recognize how valuable a life insurance policy is. It’s your job to get consumers talking about life insurance today, in case the unexpected happens tomorrow.
With Liberty National life insurance plans, consumers have confidence if they die unexpectedly their families will have financial help with a child’s college education, the ability to pay monthly bills, and can continue living in their family home. Life insurance buys loved ones time to grieve a loss. It helps pay off debts or loans and allows surviving family members the chance to move on with their lives.
Life can change in an instant, and Liberty National Agents can be the light during a dark time for families experiencing loss.

Don’t Leave Money on the Table!Kick your Reinstatement Bonus efforts into high gear, because your Agency will follow your lead on this program. There’s no better lead than someone who knows Liberty National, has a need for insurance, can qualify for it, and could afford it at one point. It must be important to you if it’s going to be important to your team!
Once the official Liberty National Facebook page reaches
3,000 ‘Likes’, we’ll award one lucky winner a FREE laptop!
Who is the mystery gal or guy who will win? It could
be you! If you haven’t already added Liberty National
to your ‘Likes’, do it now! You could be sporting a new
laptop in a few weeks … along with the coveted title of
MR., MS., or MRS. 3000.
Here are a few tips to help you make the most of the Reinstatement Bonus Program:
1. Print the list and distribute it one page at a time at Monday’s call session. Have Agents turn in each sheet showing scheduled appointments before giving them more leads.
2. Sort the spreadsheet by ZIP codes or cities in which Agency Directors have Agents working. Print and distribute to Agency Directors so they strongly encourage team members to reinstate business each month. A good starting point? Absolutely!
3. Have a contest within your team or Agency to see who can earn the biggest reinstatement bonus check for the month or who can reinstate the most policies. Provide the winner with a plaque engraved with his/her name and ‘[Month] Reinstatement Champ’.
Reinstating business is beneficial for everyone. Boost your commissions and renewals each month, while providing customers with needed financial protection. A simple phone call can make the winning difference for you, your customer, and your team!

26 - torch September 2013 why we do what we do
The Best of Life When you were a kid dreaming about what you wanted to be when you grew up, I bet very few of you dreamed about selling life insurance. I know I didn’t. But looking back at where my life has taken me and what I have accomplished, I know now I couldn’t have had a better dream or ultimately made a better decision than joining the insurance industry.
You are all blessed to have come to Liberty National. There are so many other careers you could have chosen, but didn’t ... and I’m glad. I believe selling life insurance is a truly noble profession. Think about it for a minute. When someone dies, who is there to help? Family members, funeral home staff, members of the clergy, mental health professionals, etc, can all provide support to help a family with the sadness and emotional healing process. And they do it well. But what about the more practical side of life and death? How will survivors pay the mortgage, utility bills, car payments, daycare expenses, college tuition, buy gas for the car, put food on the table? And the list goes on. Do you know of any professional person who can provide a family with both financial compensation and emotional support in time of tragedy? I can’t think of a single one other than a life insurance Agent.
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM). It’s coordinated by the nonprofit Life Foundation, whose mission statement reads, ‘LIFE’s mission is to inspire the public to take personal financial responsibility through the ownership of life insurance and related products’. Every September, a celebrity spokesperson serves as a national spokesperson for the awareness campaign. This year’s spokesperson is Boomer Esiason, MVP quarterback and radio and TV broadcaster, whose mother died of cancer, and without life insurance, when he was only 7. Her passing left only his father to care for him and his two sisters … while still continuing to work fulltime to support the family. Says Boomer, “Life insurance is about protecting the future and the people you love,” and he has made sure he’s done that for his own family. Watch for Boomer in TV and radio spots this month as he shares his story, and go to www.lifehappens.org to learn more about Life Insurance Awareness Month.
Providing financial compensation to a family during the most difficult time of their lives is tremendously important. If that family doesn’t have to worry about paying bills and surviving financially through the coming weeks, months, and years, it has the luxury of
mourning its loved one and learning how to adjust to life’s changes. Having strong emotional support is critical for a family dealing with a loved one’s passing, but strong financial support is just as important.
If you’re like me, you probably still remember the first time a grieving widow or widower received a life insurance check. If you had any doubt before, you had no doubt after, that you had made the right decision to become an Agent with Liberty National. We talk a lot about the things we need to do to grow our Agencies, increase production, and increase our wealth … recruiting, training, prospecting, etc. But we must never forget that selling life insurance is just as much about helping people … helping people financially protect the ones they love during the worst of times.
There are a lot of reasons we do what we do. Yes, we can make a wonderful living. We can form lifelong friendships with other Agents and our customers. We can have flexible schedules so we have more time to spend with our families. We can ‘have’ a lot by being an Agent of Liberty National. But we can also give a lot … to our families, friends, customers, prospects … and our Company.
The fourth and final quarter of the year starts next month. Resolve today to make the last quarter of 2013 one you, your Agency, and the Company can be proud of. IT’S TIME … TO BE ALL YOU CAN BE!
