Who is Toroa Radio?Toroa Radio is Dunedin's Community Access radio station. Community Access radio is, in a nutshell, radio by, for and about the local community. Rather than employ DJs, Toroa Radio trains people from the community and community groups to make their own radio shows.Toroa Radio is a station for the whole community. Our youngest programme maker was 7½ , while our oldest is in his 80s. We have programmes from groups as diverse as Dunedin Public Libraries, SF Otago, the Asthma Society, the Dunedin Church of Christ and the NZ Buddhist Youth Association. We also make programmes with many of Dunedin's high schools, intermediates and primary schools. All of the programmes we make represent voices that cannot be heard anywhere else.

Why sponsorship?Toroa Radio is funded for 60% of our operating costs by NZ On Air. We source the remainder through various means, but primarily through charging our programme makers for airtime. We strive to keep airtime costs as low as we can. However, we still find from time to time that we have deserving programme makers who cannot afford the cost of broadcasting with us. In this situation, we seek commercial sponsorship to cover the cost of the programme.

What does it cost? The cost of sponsoring a show depends on how long and how often the show you sponsor is. Airtime on Toroa Radio costs $30+GST per hour, and programmes currently range in length from 30 minutes to 2 hours. As a rough indication, the cost of a fortnightly hour would be $67.50 a month GST inclusive.

Benefits of sponsorship

Naming rights and promotionSponsors get their name attached to the 30 second “promo” we record for each of our shows. These promos are played by our on-air automation system during times when no-one is on air. Promos are also played by volunteer announcers in the day or so leading up to the next episode of the show.We also promote sponsors on our website www.toroaradio.co.nz, and in our monthly newsletter Hearsay.

AdvertisingThe programme maker whose show is sponsored plays ads for the sponsor over the course of the programme. Generally, one ad is played per 15 minutes sponsored – so a 30 minute shot contains 2 ads, an hour contains 4 and 2 hours would contain 8.

PhilanthropicBy sponsoring a radio show on Toroa Radio, you allow a unique local voice to be heard. None of our programme makers would be given the time and support necessary to make their shows on commercial radio. As commercial stations are increasingly centralised and networked, Community Access stations like Toroa Radio are the last remaining truly local stations. Supporting programmes on this station is supporting local culture, and helping to make sure that local issues are raised and discussed.Sponsorship is also a great way of building relationships with community groups which can be very valuable in the long term.
