Publisher’s ViewWell as you can see in this issue quite a few things are coming up and much has been happening.First we had the stellar recording of trumpeter, Mike Field entitled RUSH MODE, not to forget his tastyaccompanying musicians. I have always found Mike full of enthusiasm for his playing, he is very creative. All tracks on this new CD. were composed and arranged by him, and his artistic imagination certainly comethrough. Full marks for originality, with a variety of tempos that you can appreciate without getting lost. Then we had yet another top-notch recording by the acclaimed Latin band Manteca , their 11th CD. thisone named MONDAY NIGHT AT THE MENSA DISCO. For all you Latin jazz fans you won’t be disappointed. This band was originally formed in 1979 by percussionist , Matt Zimbel and bassist, Henry Heillig. Sincethose early days they have performed across the U.S.A , Canada, and Europe . Look for Manteca at The MonarchTavern , November 10th. While on the subject of first-class bands the University of Toronto Jazz Orchestra havejust released their new CD. REFLECTIONS featuring veteran saxophonist, Mike Murley and Gordon Foote ,Director. This recording has a variety of fine original arrangements , delightful ballads and up-tempo numbers.Something to please everyone, with the tunes being played by 21 practiced musicians, plus of course their tutors, Mike Murley andGordon Foote. Next up a new recording 57 MINUTES by captivating vocalist, Laura Marks to be released on November 12th at TheJazz Bistro. Laura has been on the jazz scene for numerous years performing in Toronto’s major clubs, she never fails to get a decentreview. Mark this one on your calendar . Finally a live recording to be made at Hugh’s Room on November 25th this is by a band namedThe Octokats led by saxophonist, Sarang Kulkarni. They will be playing West Coast style of Jazz , very smooth , my kind of jazz. Justlook at some of the renowned musicians in this band ( in advertisement) one night not to miss.
As you will also notice in their advert the beautiful Rose Theatre in Brampton have superb line-up coming in, worth the trip outof town. On the subject of advertisers , once more I would like to express my gratitude to those fine musicians, establishments, theatres
and clubs who support this free non-profit publication withtheir adverts. They maybe few but are very special. I canassure you by the emails and calls I get, you have been noticed, thanks again. As this is the last issue for this year I wouldlike to express thanks to photographer, Barry Thomson.Barry is always on the run in and out of the city, also to theU.S.A he is a true professional. By the way check out Barry’sRenowned Artists page on www.torontojazz.ca recently up-dated with more exceptional photos. Also thanks to the goodpeople at E-impressions who do my lay-out and printing, never let me down, and always punctual; first- classestablishment. To editor , Rick Nixon always there when youneed him and to Gert Wieland of Just Core Business whokeeps our website running smoothly.
As always a special thanks to Stephen McGrath,Media Relations Manager . Roy Thomson & Massey Hall, and, Barbora Kršek Concert Publicity Manager andPublications Editor , Koerner Hall. Both, Barry Thomsonand myself wish to recognize them for their proficientattention to our media requests. It is important, because weboth have busy schedules, so it’s always appreciated when weget a prompt response.

ILUSIÓNThis group of musicians perform regularly at Hotel & Villas DonLino in Rafael Freyre, about an hour from the city of Holguin.Mostly singing traditional Cuban songs, including all the tourist’sfavorites, including “Guantamaro”… Like most Cubans they singfrom the heart, and you know they are expressing exactly what theyfeel. Always a pleasure to hear when I visit this hotel
Holguin – CubaPhotos by Dave Milbourne
Frank & Luis Gonzalez Artista De La Plastic Pintors
Frank (on left) and Luis have been artists for over 35 years in thecity of Holguin. They paint in many styles, abstract, traditional, contemporary, and impressionist. If requested the brothers will oftenaccept commissions, with sufficient notice of course. On your nexttrip to Holguin why not pay them a visit, close to the city centre atCalle Miró , No: 121 Esq. Aguilera. Their prices are veryreasonable and they are pleased to practice both their English andFrench with tourists from Canada.
Manuel de Jesús Reyva Berra Faustino Oramas“Ko Ko” “El Guayabero”
Sadly both of these legendary Holguin based musicianshave passed on. I was proud to have known both of them, they were two unique individuals. Whenever I visited, they made me feel most welcome, treated me as if I was abrother. No doubt about it they will never be forgotten.

KOERNER HALL - Celebrating Dinah & SarahPhotos by Barry Thomson
ARLENE DUNCANRANEE LEE JACKIE RICHARDSON
MARK MCLEAN PAUL NOVOTNY, JOE SEALY, KELLY JEFFERSON, DON THOMPSONREG SCHWAGER
We often hear the expression “he’s played with everyone” and that certainly applies tothis outstanding bebop player. Many will remember him for his stellar performancesat the Café des Copains and Montreal Bistro, where he usually packed the places.Born in Dallas, Texas , U.S.A. Cedar was fortunate enough to have a mother who wasconcert pianist, and who was his first teacher. At an early age his early influencescame from listening to Nat King Cole, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and ArtTatum. He first attended the University of Denver studying composition andarranging, then into the music education system at a local public school. Everythingsoon started to pay off his ability play and arrange gained recognition by the greats ofthat era.(50s). Like most in the U.S.A and Britain at that time he was drafted into theU.S. Army and sent to Germany. While there he jammed with, Leo Wright, DonEllis, and Eddie Harris , after 2 years military time he was discharged oncompletion of service.
From that moment on he never looked back, going on to play as a sidemanwith, Kenny Dorham, J.J. Johnson, and Gigi Gryce. Then from 1958-1961 joined aJazztet led by Benny Golson and Art Farmer, and in 1959 recorded with JohnColtrane, no solos for Cedar on this recording. Next up, early 60s he joined ArtBlakey’s Jazz Messengers as both pianist and arranger. This group also consisted ofWayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard, wow! what a combination. Just over 3 yearswith Art Blakey then Cedar moved on to perform with Sonny Cris, Pat Martino,Eric Kloss, Charles McPherson, Abbey Lincoln, and Lee Morgan. Then tosurprise many during the 70s he led a funk group by the name of Mobias. As leader Cedar had over 40 recordings to his name,as sideman over 25. In January 2010 , he was inducted as a member of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters.Cedar Walton certainly lived up to his description “ American Hard Bop Jazz Pianist”. Gone but not forgotten.
Margaret Marian McPartland O.B.E.March 20. 1918.—August 20. 2013.
Photo by Barry ThomsonOne might of thought of Marian as the jazz version of another famous British artist, vocalist, Vera Lynn. They both entertained the troops during the second world war andboth been commended for their service to Britain. Although Marian moved to the U.S.Ain 1944,shortly after her marriage to American cornetist, Jimmy Mcpartland. Vera Lynncontinued to sing all through the war with the bombs falling and remained in England.Of interest, Vera is 96 and as far as I know still alive, she is now Dame Vera Lynn.
Now back to the remarkable career of Marian McPartland who first beganplaying the piano when she was just a child at 3 or 4 years old. Her early classical studiesalso included the violin. She continued her musical education at the highly recognizedGuildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England. Over 70 years this fine ladyhad gained recognition as a pianist, radio host, writer, and composer. Marian had beenrecording since 1951, received numerous honorary degrees and awards including aGrammy in 2004..
Her style as a pianist was uncomplicated, you could always relate to what shewas doing. Listening to her was a delight, whether it was nice standard or one of her ownsuperb compositions, it was perfection. Not surprising she was in constant demand eitheras a soloist or trio format, where Marian seemed most happy. Not only did Marianunderstand the piano as an instrument, with all its complexities, she also understood
exactly what other pianists were doing, and could explain it. Marian was a true technician in more ways than one.I remember one occasion at the Montreal Bistro, where she loved playing, and owner Lothar Lang was elated to have
her there. Anyhow. I had met Marian previously and she said to me “Hi Dave. I wonder how many other Brit’s” are here to-night”. Then she sat down at the piano, picked up the microphone and said “how many Brit’s are here to-night?” The responsewas a loud cheer, which she really got a kick out of. Marian had never forgot her British background and we will never forgether and what she had brought to the world of jazz..
