During the month of June, our Predictive Maintenance (PdM) Department together with our partner, RDI Technologies, intro-duced the Motion Amplification Technolo-gy to the market and by extension, our customers, via a seminar held at our facili-ties.

RDI’s patented technology measures de-flection, displacement, movement and vibration not visible to the human eye. Motion amplification is a video-processing product and software package which de-

tects subtle motion and amplifies that motion to a level visible with the naked eye. It provides the visualization of motion without adding costly sensors or spending days modelling the asset.

The benefits of Motion Amplification are:

Throughout my life, sports has played an integral part in the person I am today. Growing up I could always be seen throwing, kicking or catching anything that was a ball or looked like it. In my secondary school days, there was never any sport I did not partake in; ranging from football and cricket to badminton and table tennis. I loved being competitive together with being the best at what I did, which translated into every aspect of my sporting life. However, my body had another idea as inju-ries took away most of my chances of excelling in the area I was so passionate about. Up until now.

Most sports allow one to have an off day since, for some reason, a person or his/her team can still push through and get the job done. But there’s one sport that doesn’t allow for mediocrity. One sport that one must be ready, willing, able and focussed no matter what; that is Dragon Boating.

Dragon boating tests one’s mental, physical and emotional capa-bilities in ways that one would never expect. It pushes the mind and body past limits that one would never thought were attaina-ble. I got started in dragon boating because injuries to both my knees meant that football was no longer an option, but my desire to keep fit was always there. Regular workouts at the gym was not enough and I had to find something through which to chan-nel my energy. With my mind wanting to, but my body unable to follow through, I became overweight and frustrated, wondering to myself what’s next. I was introduced to the sport by a good

friend who faced the same challenges. Being in the gym at the time, I felt as though I had some level of fitness to mas-ter this sport, but I was completely wrong. My first few weeks of paddling nearly made me quit, as my arms and lungs gave up every time I tried. It was then I was told that dragon boating is not won during the race, but in the preparation leading up to it. This became my motto for life, which changed me in so many ways as I began training and eating not only to be strong, but to be fit.

My life has changed so much thanks to dragon boating, but honestly it’s not the health and fitness aspect (that one might think has been the motivator). It’s the lesson learnt by participating in the sport and a les-son we all can apply to our life. Dragon boating consists of individuals who have come together to be a well oiled machine. No one is allowed to be weaker than the other and all must pull his/her own weight. When a person is not as synchronized as the others it creates a drag, the boat is harder to maneuverer and does not move as fluid as it should. The helm, who has control of the boat, must use all of his/her skill and strength to get things back on course. There is no individual plaudit here, as only the entire team’s success or failure is considered. One is trained to be just as strong as the next and giving up is not an option until the goal is realized. I’ve used these disciplines to help push me through my everyday life, especially at work, because it’s all the same.

At TOSL, we must support each other and look at the company from a holistic view point. If this is accomplished, the

helms would have an easier race to guide us through thus enabling a stronger finish and a successful team. Hence,

teamwork is the essence of success. Page 2

In this Horizon issue, we will be having a one-on-one discussion with another of our long service employees, Rafeal Partap, Lead Inspector.

1.) How many years have you worked at TOSL?

I have been employed at TOSL for approximately thirteen (13) years.

2.) Based on your experience with us, what do you think it takes to succeed at this company?

I think it takes a lot of personal ambition and hard work to succeed at TOSL.

3.) What suggestions for improvements do you have to make our workplace better?

The company needs to be more homogenous, i.e. readily sharing of information and divisional / departmental support while operating with unity.

4.) What is most satisfying/enjoyable about your job and working with TOSL?

I would say the facilities provided by management to make us the employees comfortable within the workplace and management’s ability to understand and be flexible in order to meet the needs of its clients and employees.

5.) What has been your most memorable experience thus far with TOSL?

When we had team builders, when our division was a united unit was the most memorable for me.

6.) What in your mind is the most significant change at TOSL when you compare the present to the days when you had just started?

The most significant change I have noticed at TOSL would be the addition of multiple work sites and the offer of an array of new services to our clients.

7.) How well do you think your training and development needs were assessed and met?

I think my development at TOSL could have been better enhanced; however, my personal ambition led me to make the start in the right direction ,after such ,TOSL soon followed to the contribution of my development.

8.) If you were retiring tomorrow, what is one thing would you like to be remembered for and feel most proud of accomplishing for TOSL?

I would like to be remembered for my hard work and integrity.

9.) What is the first word that comes to mind when you think of TOSL?

The first word that comes to mind when I think of TOSL is “Quality”.

10.) Why have you chosen to stay with TOSL and not move to other jobs, as most people do these days?

The reason I have stayed at TOSL has been to express my sense of loyalty and gratitude to the company that has nurtured my self-development and also because of my belief that TOSL has the potential to become the best Engineering Solutions Company in the region.

“Environmentalism is an ideology that evokes the necessity and responsibility of humans to respect, protect, and pre-serve the natural world from its anthropogenic (caused by humans) afflictions”.

It’s safe to say that most of us understand how important it is to be conscious of the environment in our day-to-day routines. But sometimes when we’re at work, these important principles are sometimes forgotten. This could be for many reasons such as:

• Workplace stress, conflict and pressures distracting us.

• Budget restrictions preventing changes from being made.

• A lack of awareness of the environmental problems unique to the workplace.

What To Do & Why It’s Beneficial Make changes in your workplace that benefits the environment:

• Conserve energy by monitoring usage.

• Implement measures to limit consumption where possible.

• Examine your organization’s production process, and identify any adaptations that make it more environmentally

friendly.

• Offset your organization’s impact on the environment by creating a greener workplace, as well as getting involved

in environmental projects. In addition to the environmental and money-saving benefits, your organization will also:

• Become increasingly eligible for certifications and accreditation.

• Enjoy further success in meeting client & supplier requirements.

• Benefit from an improved brand image.

• Appeal to a wider pool of possible recruitment candidates.

• Potentially attract more investment opportunities.

People talk about employee empowerment in many different ways, but the basic theme remains; give your employees the means for making important decisions and making those decisions the right ones.

The results, when this process is done right, are heightened productivity and a better quality of work life.

Employee empowerment means different things in different organizations, based on culture and work design. Howev-er, empowerment is based on the concepts of job enlargement and job enrichment. (Con’t on Pg. 5)

In today’s world, customer service is a critical part of EVERYONE’s job as customers are vital to our success and

existence. The ten (10) commandments of great customer service are as follows: 1

1.) Be a good listener: Listen to what he/she wants and then take the time to ask questions to understand what the custom-er is really saying. Listen to their words, tone of voice, body language and how they feel. Don’t make assumptions think-ing you know what the customer wants.

2.) Identify and Anticipate Needs: Customers don’t buy products and services. They buy solutions to problems. The more you know your customers, the better you become at anticipating their needs. Hence, communicate regularly.

3.) Make customers feel important and appreciated: Always use their name and be sincere as it creates trust. Think about ways to generate good feelings about doing business with you. Thank them every time you get a chance. 4.) Body Language is key: Ensure your body language conveys sincerity. Your words and action should match. 5.) Understanding is important: Help customers understand our systems. We may have the best systems for getting

things done, but if customers don’t understand them, they can get confused, impatient and angry. Take the time to ex-plain how our systems work.

6.) Appreciate the Power of “Yes”: Always look for ways to help our customers. When they have a request (as long at it is reasonable) tell them you can do it. Figure out how after. However, always do what you say you are going to do.

7.) Know how to apologize: When something goes wrong, apologize. It’s easy and custom-ers like it. The customer may not always be right, but they must always win. Deal with problems immediately and let customers know what you have done. As much as we dis-like it, value complaints as it gives us an opportunity to improve.

8.) Give more than expected: Since our future lies in keeping customers happy, think of ways to go above the competition. Consider the following :

• What can you give customers that they cannot get elsewhere?

• What can you do to follow-up and thank people even when they don’t buy?

• What can you give customers that is totally unexpected? 9.) Get regular feedback: Encourage and welcome suggestions about how you could improve. 10.) Treat employees well: Employees are your internal customers and need a regular dose of appreciation. Thank them, treat them with respect and chances are they will have a higher regard for customers. Appreciation starts from the top.

• Job enlargement: Changing the scope of the job to include a greater portion of the horizontal process. Example: A bank teller not only handles deposits and disbursement, but also distributes traveller’s checks and sells certificates of deposit.

• Job enrichment: Increasing the depth of the job to include responsibilities that have traditionally been carried out at high-er levels of the organization. Example: The teller also has the authority to help a client fill out a loan application and to determine whether the loan will be approved.

As these examples show, employee empowerment requires:

• Training in the skills necessary to carry out the additional responsibilities.

• Access to information on which decisions can be made.

• Initiative and confidence on the part of the employee to take on greater responsibility.

• The establishment of a learning organization by management.

Employee empowerment also means giving up some of the power traditionally held by management, which means manag-ers also must take on new roles, knowledge and responsibilities. Employee empowerment is the key for the organization to grow and prosper.

It does not mean that management relinquishes all authority, totally delegates decision-making and allows operations to run without accountability. It requires a significant investment of time and effort to develop mutual trust, assess and add to indi-viduals’ capabilities and develop clear agreements about roles, responsibilities, risk taking and boundaries.

What does an empowered organizational structure look like?

Employee empowerment often also calls for restructuring the organization to reduce levels of the hierarchy or to provide a more customer – and process-focused organization. Employee empowerment is often viewed as an inverted triangle of organizational power. In the traditional view, manage-ment is at the top while customers are on the bottom; in an empowered environment, customers are at the top while man-agement is in a support role at the bottom.
