TOTAL COMFORT NEWS news
What a year this past year has been! In early May we celebrated Jim’s retirement
with a surprise party...and boy was he surprised! With his retirement “official”
comes a new set of challenges and responsibilities. For those of you who have
known Jim over the years, I can tell you that he is certainly enjoying his retirement
and keeping himself very busy. In addition to his own retirement, his wife, my
mother, which many of you have also known over the years, celebrated her retire-
ment in June. I want to congratulate them both and wish them much happiness
in the next “leg” of their life.
Summer started with a bang, warmer weather early on but it didn’t last very long.
May brought some unseasonably cool temperatures and June started a trend of
never ending rain! It certainly made scheduling those air conditioner mainte-
nances a challenge this year so I appreciate all of your patience!
I can only hope that with all of the rain we saw this summer, that we don’t see the
equivalent in snow this winter! Just to be safe, make sure you that your snow
blower is tuned up early and your shovels are ready to go. We have learned in
Wisconsin that anything can happen.
Please enjoy this season’s newsletter. There are some great recipes and energy
savings tips. As always, have a safe and happy winter season.

There’s no such thing as a
furnace that never dies.
According to David Ken-
yon of Sears Home Ser-
vices, the typical furnace
lasts about 15 or 20 years.
Unfortunately, in evaluat-
ing any given furnace,
there is no way to know its
expiration date in advance.
All you can do is exercise
caution as the furnace en-
ters the final stages of its
life by properly maintain-
ing it.
As winter gets underway,
be sure to scrutinize your
monthly energy bills.

COMEBACK IS

SETBACK!

Are You Ignoring the Signs That You Need A New Furnace Continued….
Are You Thinking “Efficiency” ?
If you’re paying much more than
last year and the rates haven’t risen,
the explanation may be that your
furnace needs attention.
Feeling cold indoors even though
the heat is on provides perhaps the
most obvious motivation to taking a
close look at your furnace. Do not
push your heating system into over-
drive. The hallmark of old, single
speed blower furnaces is uneven
heating. Feeling cold indoors may
be the inevitable result of an in-
creasingly outdated technology.
A furnace cycles on and off during
the course of its normal operation.
When your home dips below the
temperature set on the thermostat,
the furnace kicks on to bring the
temperature back up. Once the ther-
mostat reaches the target tempera-
ture, the furnace turns off, and the
cycle continues from there. If the
performance of your furnace gives
you any reason to think it may be on
its way out, track its pattern of oper-
ation. Does the furnace cycle on and
off frequently or does it see to run
all the time? If the answer is yes to
either question,. It may be a sign the
furnace isn’t working as designed.
During heating season, there’s never
a convenient time for the furnace to
give out, especially considering the
discomfort and the genuine hazards
of a home without heat. Making
matters worse, it seems that our
heating equipment always has a ten-
dency to die on “one the coldest
days of the year”.
Rather than court disaster by de-
pending on a troubled appliance, we
recommend taking a proactive ap-
proach. Call Professional Heating
and Air Conditioning today for a
quote on a new energy efficient fur-
nace for your home!
When you think about heating or
cooling your home, do your
thoughts turn to money and energy
efficiency? Like any other appliance,
the more efficient your heating and
cooling systems are the less money
the cost to run.
More than half of the energy used
for a typical home goes towards
heating and cooling it according to
the U.S. Department of Energy. By
choosing the most energy-efficient
equipment that meets your needs,
you may be able to spend less mon-
ey to heat and cool your home. It’s
also good for the environment by
reducing air pollution and conserv-
ing energy.
Before investing in a new furnace or
air conditioner look at the Ener-
gyGuide label. The FTC forces man-
ufacturers to let you know how
much energy a product uses as well
as how it compares to similar mod-
els by providing an EnergyGuide
label. If you don’t see the infor-
mation on the product itself before
a purchase, look for the information
on a website, fact sheet or brochure.
If you are not in the market to up-
grade your heating and cooling sys-
tem, there are still things you can do
to your existing system to help make
it more efficient as the small savings
can add up.
• Seal air leaks around windows,
doors and areas where pipes or
wires come through walls.
• Check your ducts for holes and
gaps where sections may have
been separated and air is leaking.
You can seal some leaks by pur-
chasing a special foil tape for
ductwork at the hardware store.
• Check your furnace filter to see
if they need to be cleaned or re-
placed. Dirty filters will cause
the system to work harder.
• Check to see that fireplace
dampers are closed when you
don’t have a fire going.
There’s plenty to consider when you
look at the new heating and cooling
systems such as the latest options,
the cost to buy them, how much
energy they use, and the cost to op-
erate them. Be skeptical of gadgets
that promise drastic reductions in
home heating and cooling costs or
extreme energy savings.

I don’t know about you but
with fall comes the craving for
hot soups and hearty casseroles.
The Tater Tot
Casserole is easy to
make and on those
cold fall days, just
seems to hit the
spot. Your family
will think that
you have slaved
over a hot stove
all day when in
reality you can
prepare this
dish from start
of finish on
about one
hour.
During win-
ter my favor-
ite thing to do is to curl up with
a blanket, a good book and a
bowl of hot soup. I usually
leave the soups to my husband
but this is a family favorite.
The Baked Potato
Soup can go with
any meal or can
serve as the meal
itself. This is an easy
“Set it and forget it”
recipe for those hectic
days that we all experi-
ence during the holi-
days.
I hope you enjoy making
these recipes as well as
eating them.

Proud pet owners have to put up with a lot in
order to keep their furry friends around. Pet
hair on the furniture and dander floating in
the air are among the most irritating down-
sides of sharing your home with a dog, or cat.
But if those hairs and particles are being scat-
tered around your home, you can bet they’re
ending up in your furnace filter and that’s just
one way owning a pet can affect your home heating and cooling
system.
These are special considerations for pet owners when it comes to
maintaining your heating and cooling system and controlling energy
use:
Replace your furnace filter.
If you have one or more shedding pets in the home, you should
check your furnace filter regularly. It’s not uncommon for it to be
matted with hair, skin cells and other particles your pet produces
that may prematurely clog your filter. If your filters are plugging up
quickly, it might be wise to switch to a reusable filter that can be
cleaned with a garden hose.
Clean your home regularly.
One of the keys to avoiding plugged filters is to prevent the hair
and dander from reaching the filter. A lightweight cordless vacuum
can make it fairly easy to suck up pet hair around the home every
other day.
Bathe and brush you pet.
The other key to controlling hair and dander is to harvest it right
off your pet’s body before he/she can scatter it around the home.
Brushes designed specifically for pet hair removal makes this job
much easier, or you can just take your pet to the groomer every few
weeks.
Get your ducts cleaned.
Small particles will Inevitably circulate throughout your entire sys-
tem, including your ducts and with a pet in the home, there will be
more of them. Every few years, have Professional Heating and Sir
Conditioning inspect your ductwork to determine if duct cleaning is
warranted. Removing accumulated pet dander is an important part

Rule of thumb...You must
be able to see through it.
Turn your humidifier on
and open the damper.
Make sure your venting is
clear and free from obstruc-
tion.
Call Professional Heating
and Air Conditioning to
schedule your Preventative
Maintenance Check..
Important Tip: If your equip-
ment fails do not reset power at
the furnace, thermostat or cir-
cuit breaker. With the newer
technology valuable infor-
mation is stored within the cir-
cuitry and it may be lost when
the unit is turned off.
YOU’LL NEVER
FAIL UNTIL
YOU STOP
TRYING.
Remember to always check the
following items before the cold
weather hits…
Turn your thermostat to the
heat position.
Change your batteries in
your thermostat and smoke
detectors.
Look at your furnace filter
and change if necessary.

might like to keep your thermostat set at 72 degrees year-round, but your pets can remain
safe and comfortable with a much wider temperature range. You could save energy and
money by setting your temperature as low as 65 degrees in the winter and as high as 80
degrees in the summer when only pets are home.
Making these tips a part of your routine will help you save energy, extend the life of you
heating and cooling system and keep your pets safe and sound.

Although winter comes as no sur-
prise, many of us are not ready for
it’s arrival. If you are prepared for
the hazards of winter, you will be
more likely to stay safe and healthy
when the temperatures start to fall.
Many people prefer to remain in-
doors in the winter, but staying
inside is no guarantee of safety.
Take these steps to keep your
home safe and warm during the
winter months. First, winterize
your home by installing weather
stripping, insulation, and storm
windows, insulate any water lines
that run along the exterior walls
and clean out gutters and repair
roof leaks.
Make sure to check your heating
system. Have your heating system
serviced by Professional Heating
and Air Conditioning to make sure
that it is clean, working properly,
and ventilated to the outside. In-
spect and clean fireplaces and
chimneys.
Finally look at your smoke detec-
tors, test batteries monthly and
replace them twice a year. Install
Carbon Monoxide detectors to
alert you of the presence of the
deadly, odorless, colorless gas.
Check the batteries when you
change your clocks in the fall and
spring. No one can stop the onset
of winter. However, if you follow
these suggestions, you will be
ready for it when it comes.
