Did You Know?
In a survey of girls 9 and 10 years old, 40% have tried to lose
weight, according to an ongoing study funded by the National
Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
One study reports that at age thirteen, 53% of American girls are
"unhappy with their bodies." This grows to 78% by the time girls
reach seventeen. (Source: National Institute on Media and the
Family)
According to the Girl Scouts Research Institute, one-third of all girls
have a distorted idea about their weight.
7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure
up in some way including their looks, performance in school and
relationships. (Source: Real Girls, Real Pressure: A National Report
on the State of Self-Esteem )
At any given time, 5 to 10 million women and girls have eating dis-
orders that harm their health, including anorexia nervosa and bu-
limia (The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists )
Nearly three out of four girls (73%) compare how they look to girls
in the media at least sometimes, with three out of ten girls (29%)
comparing their looks either a lot or all the time. (Source: Girl Scout
Research Institute, Girl Survey Panel, N=351, April 2008 )
Among 11 - 13 year old girls, more than 50% believe they are over-
weight. (eatingdisorders411.com)
Frequent music video viewing may be a risk factor for increased
perceived importance of appearance and increased weight con-
cerns among adolescent girls (Borzekowski, Robinson, & Killen,
1999).
