If you have come this far then hopefully the idea of running your own business appeals to you, but there are probably lots of questions running round in your head. Just a few of those that went through mine when I first considered this type of business were;• Is this type of business the right thing

for me? • Can I make a success of it?• Do I need childcare qualifications or

experience or a background in business?

• Which opportunity is right for me?I am sure you have many more.

Well, let me tell you a little about how I got started, and what skills and qualities I think I have made most use of to get to the point of running a successful pre-school classes business. Then you will want to know more about what Tots Play classes involve, the market for baby and toddler classes and some of the reasons that Tots Play has grown so quickly, so you can consider whether running this type of business would be the right move for you. So let’s get going...

If you answered yes to the above then becoming a Tots Play franchisee could be just the solution you are looking for. Want to know more? Read on.....

In 2004 I was a new mum who didn’t want to leave my baby to go back to work. I did, however, need an income and also a focus for me in addition to being a devoted mum!

I tried a couple of party plan companies for a while, which were ok but not really what I was looking for, then came across an advert for a pre-school music class franchise. I had never done anything like it before (my background is in retail and leisure management!) but I enjoyed taking my daughter to similar activities so I decided to give it a go. I started with a few classes locally, a couple of mornings a week around play dates, nap times and other baby related activities, and found that it was something I actually quite liked doing!

I worked hard and gradually built up the business at my own pace as my daughter grew, bringing in a good income, my own money, working a few hours a week around her. So far, so good. Then my husband got offered a good job overseas and after a great deal of consideration I sold the business and we moved to the Middle East.

Once we got settled out there I found there was very little in the way of classes for babies and toddlers and decided to start a group for a few of the mums I got to know in new country. Gradually more people got to hear about what I was doing and I had opportunity to try out different things, work with lots of different nationalities and to learn more about play and development. Then, just as I had started to build up quite a following for what I was doing, my husband’s contract came to an end and we returned to

the UK. Frustrating as this was I decided to take the opportunity to make use of all the experiences I had, take the best of what I had learned and put together a new programme, and so Tots Play was born. (Read more about what the programme involves in the What is Tots Play? section)

By now all the customers I had before had grown up and moved on, so despite having lots of ideas for my new programme I had to start all over again from scratch, in the middle of a recession, to build up my new business. A few months later I was running several sessions through the week, in between the school run, for over a hundred families and growing. Before changing my focus to spreading the Tots Play message across the country, I successfully ran classes for babies and toddlers for over 10 years, personally running sessions through the week around the school run and seeing around 150 families per week. And guess what ... you could too! My time is now devoted to sharing my experience and using what I have learned in the process of building not one, but three, businesses to help you to do the same with the Tots Play franchise.

I meet so many mums who have to leave their little ones to return to work, often full time, when they really don’t want to, and I would love for you to have the opportunity that I have had to run a rewarding, fun and profitable business that works around your family commitments. I would also love to be the one to help you on your way, to champion you and to celebrate your success!

How Tots Play began

Page 4: Tots Play Franchise Info Pack

To help you work out whether it might be right for you I have described below what I consider to be the four most important building blocks that I have used to develop my business over the years. These are also the qualities that I, and the Tots Play team, will bring to help you to establish and build your own business.

• I work at it consistently. There is no magic pill (that I’ve found!) to building a successful business. It takes time, effort and perseverance on an ongoing basis, as well as some basic organisational skills. It does get easier with time, but the saying that you get out of something what you put in to it is absolutely true.

• I am willing to learn, change and adapt. I continually seek to learn new things that will help to develop my business. This might lead to new activities to add to the programmes or an extra way to promote the classes, but keeps me moving forward. You also need to be adaptable when you are working with young children as sessions don’t always quite go according to plan!

• I focus equally on providing a great service and on growing the business. To keep people coming back to classes each week, recommend them to their friends, and return with subsequent children you have to be offering a high quality service that they enjoy and meets their needs. However you could be offering the best classes in the world but if nobody knows about them then no one can enjoy them, and that’s not good for anyone, so marketing and promoting the classes is as important as how you deliver them.

• I love what I do! Running your own

business has many ups and downs, but if you enjoy the core part of it, in this case running the weekly classes, then you can get through the rest of it! Even when following a structured programme it is important to put your personality into what you are doing, and once you are having fun everyone else will too!

But, it’s not going to be for everyone

4

www.totsplay.co.uk

Page 5: Tots Play Franchise Info Pack

If you think that you could bring some of these qualities, coupled with your own unique skills, abilities and experiences into running a business, then you are well over half way there!

Notice that in the points listed above there is no mention of specific qualifications, experience or background in either childcare or business, nor singing or acting lessons. That is not to say that those things would not be beneficial, but in my opinion the personal qualities that you bring to a business are the

most important factor in how well it will work for you.

Could it be for you? If you think that this type of business could be what you are looking for, then next you need to consider which opportunity would best meet your needs.

In the next section you can find out more about Tots Play, what the programme is about, why it is going from strength to strength and what opportunities it presents for you.

Tots Play is a programme of movement and sensory based play classes suitable for babies from birth to around 3 years to attend with a parent or carer. The programme is split into different classes for different age groups, but all having the aim of providing valuable, developmental play activities for children and adults to enjoy together.

One of the reasons our customers love Tots Play is that it offers a little bit of (almost!) everything.

The programme allows them to spend focused, quality time with their child, while learning a whole range of ways to play, interact and communicate with their baby or toddler that provide not just one, but many benefits for their development.

Instead of having to choose between a music class, a yoga class, a movement class, a signing class a sensory class etc.... for their little one they can give their child all these

experiences in one programme. It is also designed so that the classes are as fun for mum or dad as they are for their baby or toddler.

Tots Play is also one of the few programmes that offers classes for very young babies, and, for new mums especially, who are ready to get out and meet new people, wanting to make the most of their (often short) maternity leave from work, while doing something fun with their baby, this is invaluable. They are then able to continue through the different stages of the programme as their baby grows, meaning parents often stay with you for many months or years –and then bring their next child along.

Parents are also encouraged to continue to play with their child at home using the ideas and resources that Tots Play provides, and the sale of these resources offers an additional stream of revenue for your business.

What is Tots Play?

6

www.totsplay.co.uk

Page 7: Tots Play Franchise Info Pack

There are over 720,000 babies born in the UK each year, and the birth rate has been increasing since the early 2000’s, with this trend set to continue.

Throughout economic challenges parents tend to prioritise spending on their children. They will invest, in particular, in high quality products and activities which they believe will be of benefit to the development or education of their child, and so demand for these remain strong in spite of what else may be happening in the economy.

As a wider range of classes and programmes have become available for babies and young children over the past decade, so awareness of the benefits of structured activity programmes such as Tots Play has grown. In response, the demand for these classes has also increased and continues to do so.

It is usually during maternity leave that parents, especially mothers, are particularly keen to take part in activities with their babies, and for many this leave may only be a few months. Many of the classes in

the market place, however, do not accept babies until 6 months of age or beyond, by which time parents are starting to think about a return to work, rather than looking for new activities. By having courses available that are suitable from birth Tots Play is perfectly positioned to accommodate the demand for classes for babies at the time that parents are looking for them, and also the time when word of mouth for great baby activities spreads fast!

The fact that Tots Play classes represent excellent value for money, by offering a range of activities in one programme, and are targeted at parents to start while on maternity leave when demand for babies activity sessions is at its highest, makes Tots Play an attractive choice in the market place, and a great business opportunity for you.

But that’s not all. With a programme that continues to provide classes to suit those babies as they grow from newborns, to crawlers and into toddlers, once parents have found Tots Play they are likely to stay – and bring their next child too!

Baby Development CourseThis is a 6 week course for babies from birth to 6 months, and sets the foundation for the Tots Play programme.New parents tell us that they are often unsure “how” to play with their baby, they worry that baby will get bored with the same few activities or that they are not doing the “right things” to stimulate their child’s development.

Tot’s Play’s Baby Development course aims to address these concerns and to build parent’s confidence by introducing them to a wide range of play and activity ideas, that are easy to do and suitable for even very young babies. There is a workbook and CD to accompany the course which encourages those attending to practice what they learn while at home.

The course covers the following topics;• Baby massage• Baby yoga movements• Basic sign language• Tummy time activities• Sensory play• Songs and rhymes

As class sizes are kept small Baby Development is a great place for parents to meet others with babies of a similar age, and many of those who meet on the courses continue to meet up long after it has ended.

Discovery Tots

Discovery Tots is a weekly play programme for babies from 8 weeks to active crawling or early walking and is the place for parents to enjoy special play time with their baby each week singing, stretching, bouncing, exploring and playing together. No two classes are the same and there are so many new things for their baby to experience each week that mums often tell us that their baby sleeps very well after their Discovery Tots session!

Classes start with warm up stretches and yoga based movements where both bodies and voices get a workout with lots of fun songs along the way. Then we practice some simple sign language before moving to the sensory area where there are a wide variety of objects to stimulate and delight all baby’s senses.

No Tots Play class would be complete without bubbles, so we finish the session by filling the room with them and, if you’re like me, you will love watching the excitement on the baby’s faces (often accompanied by jiggling arms and legs!) as they watch them float by and pop!

Discovery Tots complements and builds on the activities included in the Baby Development course, and is a great way for parents to continue to enjoy their baby’s favourite activities, but they do not need to have attended Baby Development to enjoy Discovery Tots.

As a Tots Play franchisee you will be able to offer the following classes and services;

Social TotsSocial Tots sessions involve a variety of movement and play activities designed especially for older babies and younger toddlers, from around 8 months to 3 years, for whom everything is an adventure and the whole world is waiting to be discovered.

It can be tricky to keep these explorers still for long, so activities are kept short and interactive meaning there is never time to get bored or fidgety!

Those moving up from Discovery Tots will recognise many of their favourite songs and sensory toys, but movements are now adapted for growing bodies and the sensory area expanded for wider exploration. Social Tots also love playing instruments and parachute games and have the chance to build on their vocabulary of sign language, but the highlight still has to be the excitement of the bubbles that finish each class!

Tots Play PartiesTots Play parties bring all the fun of Tots Play classes to a special celebration such as a birthday or christening.

Each session is planned to cater for the specific requirements of the party organiser, with songs, instruments, play time with our colourful equipment, parachute and bubble popping firm favourites!

Tots Play ResourcesTots Play is about not just about attending a weekly play class, it aims to inspire parent and child to enjoy and make the most of their play times all week long! To help with this we sell a range of Activity Guides, CD’s and Play Resources to build on class activities and encourage play, exploration and learning at home too. As a Tots Play franchisee you will be able to offer these resources to your customers as an additional income stream.

As a Tots Play franchisee you will be able to offer the following classes and services;

Page 10: Tots Play Franchise Info Pack

Tots Play classes also provide a much needed service for your local community. Here are just a few of the comments we have received from parents who have attended Tots Play classes;

“Tots Play provides a great mix of activities, so we didn’t have to choose to a whole course of just one thing - baby massage / baby sign / singing etc. We love the variety, it keeps all of the babies (and mums!) really interested throughout the class. We started our first course when Jake was just 8 weeks old, it was really lovely to learn some massage techniques which we have continued as part of our bath time routine. Since then the follow on course has continued to develop with the babies - Jake now particularly enjoys the sensory play and the very active songs!”Rebecca and Jacob (Baby Development and Discovery Tots)

“My favourite thing about the classes is Joshua’s face when he sees the other babies ... he was completely mesmerised the first time we attended!! His social skills are certainly benefiting from these classes. He gets a chance to interact with the other babies if he wants to, or he can just sit back and watch everyone else if he wanted to. He loves exploring with different things and the sensory sessions completely let him do this to his heart’s content. We bought the activity book that complements the classes and I have found this very helpful to use at home, and it gives a chance for my partner to join in with the fun!”Kate and Joshua (Discovery Tots)

“I was a little worried at first how she would respond to the activities being such a young baby as she started on the baby development course at 6 weeks. I was amazed how engaging she found it. She was so relaxed during the baby massage, smiled happily at the other babies in her class and loved watching the bubbles at the end of every session. Now at four and half months she smiles and laughs at me when I sing her the songs at home on the CD and her body movements and co-ordination is developing incredibly well. I see something new in her every week.”Julie and Jennifer (Baby Development and Discovery Tots)

“I’ve been to both discovery and social tots with my 14 month old. We’ve both thoroughly enjoyed the classes, and feel that the classes have a great deal to offer to even the youngest pre-schooler. They appeal to the children with short, well resourced, snappy parts to each session, keeping them interested and involved all the way through. I would recommend the classes to any mum, baby and toddler.”Louise and Maia (Discovery and Social Tots)

The franchise programme allows you to set up and run Tots Play classes in your local area, at times that you choose, on a self employed basis.

A one off payment, which also covers your initial training and equipment, plus a flat rate monthly franchise fee will grant you the opportunity to run classes in an area that will be exclusive to you, with the option to expand to additional areas (subject to availability) for an extra cost as and when you are ready to do so. This means that the business can be as big or small as is right for you or can grow at a pace that works for your circumstances. You will run the programme, as set out in the training and operations manuals, as your own business with the financial rewards determined by the effort you put into it. You will be required to sign an agreement setting out the terms and conditions of the programme. In order to make the opportunity as flexible and affordable as possible you will find we work hard to keep the fees associated with the business to a minimum and don’t take a percentage of your income. Instead,

after the initial investment to purchase your exclusive territory and for your training and equipment, the simple monthly fee, payable each calendar month you operate the business, makes it easy to budget and to maximise your profits. You will also be required to purchase a Tots Play workbook for each participant at the Baby Development courses that you run, and welcome packs for those attending weekly sessions. After this all profit you make is yours.

The aims of the Tots Play franchise programme are as follows:For it to be flexible – It is designed so that it can work for you whether you want to run just a couple of classes a week around your little ones or to top up the family finances, or build it into a bigger business bringing in a full time income. It can also grow and change as your family and circumstances do.

For it to reward the effort you put into it – The flat rate monthly fee means that the more you earn, the more you get to keep. We do not take a percentage of your profits.

For it to be easy to operate – I don’t believe that business needs to be complicated. We provide step by step training to help you feel confident in running Tots Play sessions and to get your business up and running. We then help you to set up simple systems to ensure your business continues to run smoothly.

For it to be fun! – Well it is in the job description to play all day!

What Our Franchisee’s SayAfter the birth of my

daughter I wanted more control over when I worked so I could fit work around my family, not the other way around and started to look at running my own business.

I felt that joining a franchise would be best

for me because I knew that I would need someone to guide and support me during my new adventure. After researching various franchises I was attracted to Tots Play because of the unique structure of the classes, they have so many different elements to help parents really enjoy being with their little one but know they are helping them with development at the same time.

I also loved the idea of offering three types of classes so each age range has lessons specifically planned to suit their development needs. Most importantly as a Mum I felt they were classes I would have enjoyed attending with my daughter.

I’ve had great support from the Tots Play team, they are always on hand to answer questions, give advice and to check I’m happy with the way things are going. The training weekend was great, everything I needed to get started and if I need a quick reminder it’s all online too! Helen has been great at helping me to learn how to work from home and use my time to good effect.

Life has changed since I’ve started running Tots Play. I love that it’s me who gets to take and collect my daughter from school every day. Before work was becoming a chore, but now I really enjoy my job, every week is different. I enjoy meeting new people and I feel really privileged that I get to watch mums and babies grow in confidence, learn new things and generally have a great time just being together.

There are many things that attracted me to

the Tots Play franchise programme. Firstly, after having lectured in Children’s Care, Learning and Development and studying in the field for a number of years, I could easily see the developmental benefits of Tots Play to

babies and toddlers and I felt it was important to believe in what I was going to offer! Secondly, after researching a number of different franchises I could see that Tots Play offered fantastic value for money. Thirdly, Helen, the Founder of Tots Play attracted me to the programme. Helen and the team are professional, efficient, passionate, and above all they genuinely want to support you, and watch you make a success of your business. They really offer a personal touch and I’m proud to be part of the Tots Play family.

The support I’ve received since starting my business has been excellent. The training Tots Play provides is fantastic and covers practical training on baby massage through to marketing and admin. I drove home at the end of my training weekend feeling excited and most importantly, prepared! On-going support since staring my business has been really useful and I’ve benefitted from Helen’s years of experience!

My life has changed significantly since starting my business, most of all because I love what I do and I feel so incredibly lucky!

The things I enjoy most about running my Tots Play business are, seeing the little ones grow and develop and sharing this special journey with their parents. I really do feel like I have the best job in the world! I also enjoy being able to run my business and my family side by side without feeling as though one is being compromised. I get job satisfaction and a sense of achievement through Tots Play and being a Mum.

If you’re thinking of taking on a Tots Play franchise and you’re not afraid of hard work then I would say go for it! I can’t recommend Tots Play highly enough.
