Touareg RNS850 CAR‐NET services by Wifi v1.0 3/16
English
The guide is strongly derived from a great job of hsd92 based on AUDI MMI 3G+ from the forum
audipassion.com. Original discussion is at this link:
http://forums.audipassion.com/topic/176913‐tuto‐online‐services‐audi‐connect‐google‐earth‐trafic‐
online‐en‐wifi/
Touareg RNS 850 personalization has been possible due to its similarity with the MMI 3G+ system and
thanks to the support of the following people:
‐ congo (developed the DataPST.db modification script and debugging)
‐ frankiegom (supported the RNS 850 debugging)
‐ Windstar (supported the RNS 850 debugging)
‐ miazza (supported the RNS 850 debugging)
Disclaim:
Even if this tutorial has been verified on some RNS850, I do not take any responsibility of what you are
doing; everything you will do , it will be at your own risk.
1. Prerequisites
In order to activate the VW CAR‐NET functionalities, the following tutorial has been validated on:
‐ VW Touareg (year 2010) – RNS 850 without SIM – FW version K0821
‐ TP‐Link MR3020 wireless routers
‐ Huawei E156G HSDA USB 3G Stick (E3131 3G, E8278 and E3276 4G should work either)
(If you have in house any USB dongle it is worth to try it before to buy one of the above).
2. Script installation via SD cad In order to install the CAR‐NET services, some modification shall be performed in the RNS‐850 Firmware.
These modification have been all collected in the below reported installation scripts included in this zip:
a) WiFi Install MMI‐3GP‐GE‐WIFI or RNS850‐GE‐WIFI (they are identical script with different name)
b) GE and Online POI Activation GE_ENABLE (RNS850 specific)
c) Diagnostic MMI‐3GP‐Diag‐v2.01 or RNS850‐Diag‐v2.01 with modified IP ping address
d) Uninstall MMI‐3GP‐GE‐WIFI‐uninstall or RNS850‐GE‐WIFI‐uninstall ?
Notes:
Scripts a) and b) are mandatory to be installed and are better to be installed in the order as they are
listed.
The Install script a) shall be run only once. In case of need for a new fresh install, the uninstall script
shall be run first; in this case look at the below warning.
The Diagnostic script is not mandatory but it is very useful in order to verify correct connection of
the RNS 850 system to internet.
GE and Online POI activation script modify the DataPSt.db by adding the necessary records; it also
saves a back‐up of your original DataPST.db in the SD card. I suggest to copy it in a safe place on
your PC for any possible future need. The modified DataPST.db is also saved in the SD as installed in
the RNS850.
WARNING: The install and uninstall script are interacting with the KELDO map activation. So after script
install, it might be necessary to reactivate the MAP with KELDO script.

In order to install the scripts, the relevant archive content (one archive at the time) shall be copied on the
root of the SD (run.sh shall be on the root) and the install process is the same for all of them:
Turn on the engine and wait two minutes to allow RNS850 to start‐up; verify that system is fully
booted by pressing all the buttons and verify nominal behaviour of all functions. After this, wait
another 30 seconds.
Insert SD card in the left card slot (SD 1) of the RNS850 Multimedia BOX and wait for the following
screen:
Tap on screen or press any key or turn the rotary knob one notch to start the script
Wait and do not touch anything until the following screen is displayed:
Again, tap on screen or press any key or turn the rotary knob to complete the script installation.
Remove the SD card and reboot the RNS 850 by pressing [NAV] + [PHONE] + [Central Knob] at the
same time.

7. Diagnostic and Trouble shooting In case the internet connection is not established, the Diagnostic script is quite useful in order to
understand the situation. Once installed, the Diagnostic script shall be executed from the Green Menu:
Green Menu Config Show IP Config
If installation is correct, the following should be your situation:
MMI IP: 192.168.1.1
Gatway: 192.168.2.1
All PING: OK
The first PING is configured to RNS850 Gatway 192.168.2.1; if this is OK and the other are KO, this
means that most likely your config is correct but no data is available from your SIM.
Check if you can access internet from a laptop when connected to the Ethernet cable of the router.
PING sites can be edited in the Diagnostic script by editing the getStatus.sh file (this of course requires a
reinstall of the diagnostic script).
8. Points to be further elaborated For systems that have built‐in SIM, the procedure should be almost the same (at least this has been
tested by Windstar). Of course the part related to router configuration is not applicable.
The only difference is that from Green Menu it is necessary to uninstall the Fairmode or, if preferred,
disable the Install Fairmode inside the install script.
Street View is not working on all systems. Especially for those car older than 2011 this feature is not
available.
In order to support the reverse engineering on this subject, it would be useful to share DataDSP.db for
systems that have a working Street View. DataDSP.db is saved on the root of the SD after the
execution of the GE and Online POI Activation script.
Traffic Online is not working. It seems that the license activation is an issue to be further elaborated.
