Hi Readers,There is much to recommend in this special issue on lifestyle, arts and fashion, coming out just after the 2013 New Years Holiday. It can reasonably be said that the arts industry should be booming by now with the new Ministry of Creative Arts Industry in music, visual arts, and performing arts. But that’s not YET the case. Who better to oversee a magazine on the subject than one who is passionate about the arts? Touché, I am the editor of the most read arts & lifestyle magazine on island. This Is 6.

The team: Jamie our writer with precisely the sort of high-watts we need, Daniel was a terrific collaborator for high quality professional photography, Dale, Sales Manager brimming with suggestions and infectious energy co-edit-ing with me, Runway-style Models that can excite you to want to know more about fashion. We needed to highlight the importance of icons such as Ronald Boo Hinkson and Louise Victor in this issue. We worked tirelessly, through all manner of hassles and setbacks, including VAT, which put a damper on Business Owners spending power. We always have our loyal sponsors who stick with us through thick and thin: Ed and Kim, Brand Managers for Bryden and Partners, Ed proclaimed our last issue as the HD issue. Wissam of Baywalk Shopping Mall who is passion-ate about supporting the arts in St. Lucia, Sean at Sean’s Wrecker, Mr. James of National Farmers and General Workers Co-operative Credit Union and so many more I may run out of space. We are ready to serve you at the Gable Woods Shopping Mall #15, Sunny Acres, Castries. Look forward to Touché TV Show hitting TV land and our Arts Daily News online. We are growing and our magazine is serving its purpose both here and abroad. I have been told many times by our readers that they really love the magazine, it’s informative and well put together. One man in particular thanked me so much because he really used the relationship tips in our last issue and how he looks forward to reading some more. So I know you’re eager to flip through the pages, do enjoy our features and tips. This issue belongs to you our readers.

Readers InformationIf you desire a change, head to www.touchemagazine.com. We’re got advice to help you find great fashion, and add style in all aspects of your life, even what to cook for dinner tonight from our favorite Chefs on island.

FEEL GOOD

Turmeric is a powerful weapon against cancer cells. Studies show that this super spice can actually prevent cancer tumors from growing and in those who already have cancer, turmeric slows the growth and spread of cancer. In a research study done with mice injected with cancer cells, the curcumin in turmeric was proven to be more than twice as effective as the cancer drug paclitaxel (Taxol). The curcumin in turmeric is also highly effective when combined with the anti-oxidant quercetin (found in red onions, apples and cherries) against pre-cancer-ous polyps in the colon. Studies show that polyps were reduced by 60% and the average size of existing polyps were reduced by 50%.

One of the most exciting new studies has shown turmeric’s value against Alzheimer’s. Stud-ies of the Indian population who have a high intake of turmeric in their curry dishes show a very low incidence of Alzheimer’s and dementia in the elderly.Alzheimer’s victims have a buildup of a certain type of plaque in the brain and turmeric is highly effective at breaking down this plaque and protecting brain health.

Turmeric helps to digest fats by stimulating the flow of bile in the gall bladder and therefore is very effective as a digestive aid and fat-burning compound. Studies also show it is highly effective at reducing the inflammation from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease.

For the heart, it contains strong anti-platelet substances which help prevent the blood from clotting too easily, and so is very effec-tive against heart attacks and strokes. In addition, homocysteine, a chemical component in the body, which is one of the primary predictors of heart attacks, is significantly lowered in the presence of curcumin.

The curcumin in turmeric also has been shown to lower and reduce the oxidation of plaque on the artery walls. As an anti-inflammatory it has been used effectively for a treatment for all types of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and for joint pain.

Try to get creative and test using turmeric and/or curry on various foods so you can benefit as much as possible from this potent super-spice.Turmeric is very yellow and can stain so be careful when using it. This spice doesn’t have to be used just for curries. It is delicious on sautéed apples, or steamed cauliflower, green beans and onions, or any of your favorite veggies.Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it’s fun to find new ways to use it in healthy recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a healthy dose of it to egg salad. It adds a great flavor, and gives the egg salad a delicious rich yellow hue.

WAYS TO USE IT!

A digestion aid and fat-burning compound

Provide the RIGHT fuel for daily life / activitiesYou won't stay on the program for long if your diet leaves you barely functional, unable to make it through your day.

The main thing you must take into account when dieting hard is that your diet has to provide sufficient fuel for your daily activities with-out slowing down your fat loss results. When it comes to fuel, your body uses two main sources: carbohydrates and fat.

The problem with carbs is that they increase your body’s insulin response.

When you eat carbs, your body converts them to glucose. As your blood glucose levels climb, your pancreas secretes insulin to mop up the excess and deliver it to your cells. Insulin reacts with fat cells to ensure that no fatty acids are released into the blood stream. That means your fat is locked in!

If you’re living in an insulin resistant state, even small amounts of the wrong foods can spike your insulin and lock in fat—and that’s true even if you’re NOT overeating. Your goal is to focus on fats for fuel. When you shift your body to using fat for fuel, you actually enjoy changes at a cellular level that make it EASIER to burn fat on an ongo-ing basis.

Safe and Effective Rapid Fat LossTIP

This is a powerful product. Within 20 minutes of taking it, I am ready to go the extra couple of miles when I run or crank out extra reps when I lift weights. It also helps when my energy levels begin dropping in the middle of the day. Things to note:1) Take with plenty of water (you don't want these babies dissolving in your throat).2) Do not take with other caffeinated products.3) Have extra water on hand while it's in your system, you will get thirsty.

“I’m very happy with this herbal tea, it worked really well for me, and has a nice flavor. I began drinking it and was pleasantly surprised at its effectiveness as a detoxifier. Clarity and even tone on my facial skin increased dramatically in a few days, and overall my skin looks and feels much better now. Even my ‘regularity’ has improved tremendously with far less effort. I have been drinking it as iced tea, consuming about 4 tea bags a day with some green tea for a better taste. Highly recommended!

HEALTH REVIEWS

4) If you want to take this twice a day (as is recommended on the label) move into it gradually. I suggest starting with 1 capsule 2x per day and see how you feel.5) Take a break from it - I don't take it on non-work out days

Positives: Response within 20 minutes; sustained energy for about 3.5 hours; Knocks the appetite way back; increases bloodflow - you will feel the thermogenic properties.Negatives: Crash! It does drop you when it is wearing off; almost too powerful if you aren’t using it for working out - just my opinion. All in all, great product. Twinlab has been around for a long time, they know their intended audience.

During the next year is the time to take advantage of the various government incentivesand work towards home ownership. The banks have organised, first year lower interest rates,

for new purchasers and there are NO VAT incentives on a lot of building materials. A visit to your bank should be the first step. If you have some money saved as a deposit this will make the purchase easier. But you will need to discuss your salary and outgoings with your loan offi cer and they will assess the amount of mortgage you can afford.

There are really three options you should consider. Buying a ready to move into home; Buying a house which needs some finishing or renovation work. Buying a piece of land to build a home. There are also well priced property options, which have the advantage of one or two apartments. They may sometimes need a little extra work, but rental income will certainly offset some of the mortgage costs.

Buying Land To BuildIf you decide buying a piece of land is going to be your first step then finding the right location for you and your family is important.

Write yourself out a list of requirement: 1) Part of a community 2) Away for everyone 3) Near a bus route....Etc you get the drift!

To build a home, which later you may want to extend 5000 - 15,000 sq ft would be good sizePrices of land per square foot vary, dependingmainly on location. The more remote locations you can still find land at $9-$10 a square foot. More ac-cessible tend to be $12 to $18 ECD a sq ft. The high price areas such as Rodney Bay, Cap Estate prices per square foot can be between $25 and $35ecd per square ft. But remember if you can afford to buy a land in these areas, your house will be a greater value when you have built is because of location. You will need a lawyer to ensure the sale is fully organised and your purchase is registered at the land registry (only at that point does the land become yours).

But, once the land is purchased you have your first foothold in owning your own home. Whether you grow vegetables on it for the next couple of years, or put a small wooden home on it until you can afford to build the house you really want, remember you then own that piece of land and can develop it later in the way you really want to.

Glad Taylor, St. Lucia Homes

Buying a HomeIf the idea of building a home is something which you find difficult then still make your “wish list” and check your mortgage potential at the bank and look at ready built houses. Sellers are often ready to negotiate at the moment, or perhaps you can find a bargain that needs some renovation work, which you can do gradually over the next couple of years. Set your goals on becoming a home owner in the next few years and gradually work towards this. Look on line at real estate websites, check St Lucia Homes fa-cebook, ask around , look in the local papers but plan your ideas and be ready to move quickly once you find that “bargain” which meets most of your “wish list” if you are ready to buy , pick up the phone to St. Lucia Homes ( offices next to Pizza Pizza , Rodney Bay.. and at Blink Rodney Bay Marina) an agent will take you to view a selection of homes, until you find the home you like the best.

any other topic? Why is that the case? In Mathew 6:24 we are cau-tioned that we cannot serve God and money, (NIV version)? If you carefully think about it, the plagues of life: killing, lying, stealing, cheat-ing, drug abuse, among others, are either directly or indirectly related to money or something of materialistic value. My purpose for writing is not to make you hate or despite wealth, but to advise you that life is more than gathering riches! You were created by God who formed this world and if, in all His wisdom, He fashioned this vast and splendid universe, don’t you think He has sufficient knowledge on how to take care of you? God himself said it best in Jeremiah 29:11, “For the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, are not to harm you but to give you hope and a future”. I implore you to seek this plan that God has in store for you. Only then you will discover the true pleasures of life!

Spiritual Connections

I was reading an article ear-lier this week which docu-mented a few responses from persons who were asked what they would like

as gifts for Christmas. I was a bit astounded that all of the answers involved money or a materialistic item. This article forced me to acknowledge the fact that many people seek pleasure in materi-alistic items. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against receiving a brand new Samsung Galaxy handset or a beats headphones or maybe a 40 inch flat screen television! I am sure you have some things written down on your wish list as well. What I am con-cerned with is this money-oriented mentally that is rapidly increas-ing among our generation. Beauty Review

It’s the Holiday Party season once again and many island women consider this time of year the time when we are at our most glamorous. This year’s beauty trends for Winter 2012 are perfect for our exotic complexions and features and is indeed the time when the fashion world has been forced to recognize the beauty that is the “Island Woman”. We have been boldly and well represented by Joan Smalls and Sessilee Lopez and the fashion world has, in a sense, finally seen the diversity that is our beauty. This season’s beauty trends are definite accents to many of the strong and often sensual attributes our strongly mixed and integrated heritages have afforded us. With that said, here are my top three “easy to apply” beauty secrets and the products available that I love for the party season to achieve that effortlessly beautiful look that Caribbean women are known for, without breaking the bank.

1. Luminous SkinI find that a lot of the time we as Caribbean women often neglect the importance of our skin. Outside of the fact that we are addicted to mois-turizing it, we tend not to pay attention to what our exact skin needs are. This season though, we are catching a major break, as the number one beauty trend is beautiful, luminescent and youthful skin. This is more easily achieved for some as they were blessed with great genetics where soap, water and cocoa butter is enough, but for the majority, we have to use some form of cleansing ritual to maintain our skin, even if it is more supple than most. The cleansing part is easy because “go wash your face” is ingrained in us from birth. It’s achieving the “dewy skinned without being greasy” look that poses more of a problem for us. This year we were blessed with an amazing product that makes achieving this incredibly easy - Thank God for BB (Blem-ish Balm/Base) Cream and Luminizers. These products are easy to use, help add moisture to the skin, even out skin tone AND help you look radiant. They are not as heavy as a foundation, but the best part is that they can be used with foundation, concealer or primer or without and you will still achieve the same flawless look. My current favorites are M.A.C. Lightful Moisture (www.maccosmetics.com), L’Oreal Paris’ Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream (www.lorealparisusa.com), Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream

Broad Spectrum SPF 35 (www.smashbox.com), Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream (www.may-belline.com) and Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream (www.garnierusa.com) . They range in price from about $7.50 (USD) to $40.00 (USD). Remember, great skin is the foundation to a great face and when you are us-ing a pea-sized amount, you definitely get bang for your buck. Also, if you apply a good all over skin bronzer or shimmering eye shadow on top, it adds to the evenness of your skin and also picks up any light in the room which helps you to glow just a little bit more radiantly.

2. Beautiful Eyes Eyes are the windows to the soul or so we are told, but really, eyes are one of the first things we notice about another person and there-fore our eyes need to be as eye-catching as possible. Lashes and strong natural looking structured eyebrows have been trends for about two seasons now and I personally think it’s amazing. I am obsessed with mascara and I al-ways groom my eyebrows so this is a no-brainer for me. Let’s talk about eyelashes first. Every woman I know wants long, full, sooty, sultry lashes and there are a few ways that this can be achieved. Firstly, I love falsies, but most days I just do not have the time to take the time to ap-ply them. They are special occasion eye acces-

yle sories only personally, unless you have supreme

confidence in your abilities on an everyday level. Other than that, a trip to your local makeup or beauty bar is recommended if false lashes are what you want. I am not there yet (New Year’s Eve probably being the exception) and really do not feel the need to be especially when there are so many amazing mascara brands out there that offer similar, if not the same effects based on your lash length. My favorites are M.A.C. False Lashes Extreme Black (www.maccosmetics.com), Sephora Collection Lash Plumper and Se-phora Collection Atomic Volume (www.sephora.com), Rimmel Volume Accelerator Mascara and Rimmel Lash Accelerator (www.sears.com). I am also hugely partial to any Dior or Maybelline mascara, as they are normally really good for whatever lash look you may like.

Grooming your eyebrows is also really im-portant. I already know that your ‘brows are plucked, threaded and waxed to perfection, but it is still important to slap some Eyebrow Gel on them. Saliva is not what we are using these days. Make Up For Ever (available at www.sephora.com) carries a few amazing eyebrow-grooming products. My favorite is the Brow Seal Transparent Eyebrow Gel.

3. Sugar Plum KissesMy favorite trend this year is the amazing wine and deep plum colored lipsticks that are being rocked by Rihanna and Azealia Banks to name a few. For Caribbean women these colors are slightly alternative and edgy, but when done properly, can be really polished as well as add a great pop of color to your look. I’ve been discovering great lipstick colors in a variety of brands and I can’t say that I really have a favor-ite. Lipstick is individual to your skin tone and some colors will look better than others on you. “Soulfully Yours” by M.A.C. is a great deep plum color that I am starting to wear often and it feels amazing (I am a medium to dark tone). Revlon, Dior and Lancome also have some really good shades. Also, do not be afraid to check with alternative brands such as Lime Crime (www.limecrimemakeup.com/categories/lips) because they always have trend inspired colors available and for reasonable prices as well.

Holiday beauty can be easy and still be amaz-ing and affordable. With these simple additions to your makeup repertoire, you will have no choice but to be flawless. You can easily craft an amazing cat eye to go with your full lashes and Christmas wine pout, or you can let your skin glow combined with a smokey eye or just wear two coats of mascara for an everyday look for af-ter the holiday. I feel like we should experiment a little, or even a lot this holiday season because this is our time to shine. Enjoy it.

Applying a sharp metal blade to your face cuts hairs but also removes microscopic layers of skin and can cause irritation like ingrown hairs (or razor bumps).Contrary to uninformed opinions, you shouldn't abuse your face to get a close shave. Quite the opposite. Here are six simple rules to minimize damage and improve your shaving results.

(1) Shave in the shower: Shaving should be your final step before leaving the shower. The warm moisture of a shower makes hairs soft and plump and opens your pores.

(2) Lubricate: A good shaving formula should form a lubricating cushion to allow shaving blades to glide without scraping your skin. Leave it on your face for a minute before shaving.

(3) Use a face scrub: A gentle scrubbing massage will help open pores, prime hair follicles and raise stubs for a closer shave. This exfoliation removes dead cells and impurities that can cause acne, ingrown hairs and infection. It will also smooth and renew your complex-ion.

(4) Use a sharp blade: Throw out shaving blades after four or five uses. Use gentle strokes; don’t put too much pressure on the blade.

(5) Avoid irritants: They can damage your skin and create microscopic swelling. Stay away from alcohol or strong plant extracts such as menthol, peppermint or citrus. (surprise surprise!)

“The rum that invented rum!”Ho ho ho and a bottle of rum! Mount Gay Rum is proven to be the oldest existing brand of rum in the world with the earliest surviving deed from 1703. Chesterfield Brown, Mixologist and Mount Gay Rum Ambassador refers to Mount Gay Rum as “The rum that invented rum!” For centuries Mount Gay has been the golden drink for sailors and buccaneers alike! Mount Gay Distilleries which is owned by Rémy Cointreau since 1989 was founded by Sir John Gay Alleyne, 1st Baronet of Four Hill in the coral-limestone island of Barbados. This elite com-munity leader, business manager and politician, among numerous other titles partnered with his dear friend John Sober, CEO of Mount Gilboa Plantation/Distilleries to manage the business. During his time in management the company’s profits and reputation became critically acclaimed, even after his death in 1801 the company was named to honor this reputable philanthropist upon the request of his long time friend, John Sober.

Chesterfield Brown travels the world to educate people about good rum! He states that we have fantastic rum in the Caribbean! However Mount Gay Rum stands out from the crowd because it’s made from the unique coral-limestone water which flows from the veins of the dynamic island of Barbados. Chesterfield believes that rum can be enjoyed by people all over the world like a delightful glass of cognac.

Mount Gay rums are typically distilled in a way similar to how it was done in the 1760’s using a traditional pot still and column still, to create a distinctive blend of flavors. Mount Gay Black is proven to be a chop above the rest! It consists of a medley of single and double distilled 2- 7 year old rums in ex-bourbon barrels. Mount Gay Black adds more character to the rum and brings forth a more intense eclipse which is much spicier and leaves a tin-gling and erotic sensation on the tip of one’s tongue!

Mount Gay Eclipse Black was released in St.Lucia on Friday 30th November at Delirius, which is located within the elite nightlife community of Rodney Bay. It was truly an event which was not to be missed! A rum tasting and mixology session was hosted by Mr. Chesterfield Brown himself and the V.I.P entertainment was “tun up!”

There will also be many promotions held island-wide to promote the rum. Ed places emphasis on Mount Gay Black being enjoyed responsibly by all consumers! He states “There is a sophistication behind it. There is a bit of a romance behind it so we don’t want you to abuse it!” Mount Gay Black brings romance, sophistication and tradition to rum as the original rum of the Caribbean and first rum brand in the world and it certainly would be Jack Sparrow’s guilty pleasure!

SPECIAL INSIDER STORY!

Page 22: Touche Magazine 6
Page 23: Touche Magazine 6

Fashion and pageantry have evolved dramatically over the years. Gone are the days when the skies were deemed as the limit to our accomplishments! With the ever increasing desire to be different and trend setters in a world where many seek to be discovered and

be famous, people often pull the stops by going all out to be that Icon or Ambassador!

Television series, charity events, grand fashion shows & advertisements await these striking young men and women of exquisite taste and desire. But is there really a crown for everyone who strives to become entertainment royalty? How many people can sit on a throne and be deemed worthy of success? Or better yet, how many people can achieve such a feat and main-tain such a positive stature for a long tenure? So many have the desire to be successful and represent an image, yet they lack the discipline to decipher the meaning of the term success and the patience to keep on persevering as any leader should regardless of the field or venture!

Miss Caribbean Tourism 2012 Consuelo Dupal said it best, it's not about "parading in your swim wear. It's about personality, what you can offer to the world and showing your talent!" We look at young international entrepreneurs and are amazed at their accomplishments. By the age of 20 many can be viewed in music videos, own businesses, are seen on television adverts and live a life of fame and fortune! Young Carib-bean men and women aspire to dominate their dreams and live such a glamorous life after being teased by the media's exquisite portrayal of these lifestyles!

Like the mayfly, the dreams of aspiring youthful talents are short lived. What role does an is-land's Miss Universe winner, Carnival Queen or Island Hunk play after the event is won and the grand festivities have ended? Are our ambas-sador’s efforts to win and dreams of "making a difference" senseless? Do they work hard and dream big just to obtain "15 minutes of fame"? Why aren’t there as many measures in St.Lucia and the other Caribbean islands for these sparks who seek to burst into ravenous flames?

It is true that opportunities do not always pres-ent themselves and individuals must strive to achieve their goals. The poem on success titled "The Heights by great men" highlights that quite blatantly! Countries such as Jamaica, Barba-dos and Trinidad finance their athletes and musicians in order to ensure that their talents revolutionize their respective sectors and keep their nation elite!

Soca artists in St.Lucia are acknowledged dur-ing the Carnival and Christmas seasons where they obtain opportunities to perform and sell their music. Many perform at no cost because they love the industry and want to be marketed. It is also saddening to see that few athletes rep-resent this great nation at the World Olympics. There are few professional training facilities for local dancers and drama enthusiasts to hone their talents and perform their pieces and many of the island's acknowledged professionals in these fields have moved on to other ventures due to such hindrances.

So pray, tell me, how many more opportunities behold Miss St.Lucia Universe 2012, Tara Ed-ward, who has graced the covers of magazines and many runways? How many doors and windows of opportunities behold Miss St.Lucia Earth 2008 and Miss St.Lucia World 2012,

Oneka McKoy? Will the celebrations of their victories be short lived like the life of the mayfly? Will the opportunities for such dynamic young women to be ambassadors to the Helen of the West Indies be few to none after they compete in the major international pageants? What about the young men and women who compete in other pageants and events? What shall befall them? Will their cries for stardom and strides to make our great nation an elite island of volcanic, spirited beings whose talents are forces to be reckoned with, be dismissed and fade into pur-gatory? Who are you and how can you assist in giving birth to a revolutionary reality?

Small Island Revolution

Royan entered the world of photogra-phy in January of 2012. He saw the work of a photographer which hap-pened to be a local artist that inspired him to enter the field. This artist

advised him to get a better camera to increase the quality of his work and subsequently Royan invested an entire month's salary into the pur-chase of a new high quality camera! From being a "picture-take-outer" Royan then learned that there was a technical aspect behind photography and is constantly developing his skills! Royan is a host on the local television series Gamer Vibe, but his interest in photography over threw his love for gaming and he has invested much more

time into studying his new found passion:

photography! " I am all about the art!" Prince Des Cartes is not driven by money with regards to conducting shoots and selling his photos, despite it being an increasingly financially beneficial field in St.Lucia. "I want to be known for my creativity gassa!" Creative and conceptualized images are certainly viewed on first glance and it is the main reason why Royan and his friend Gideon Ambrose have teamed up. He is also working on his own book! I think that he certainly is a trend setter among young St.Lucian men. Many photographers insist on having their photos say a thousand words, but Royan insists on creating a Broadway theatrical extraordinaire with each diverse capture!

In 2010 she was approached by the mem-bers of Red Unlimited, 758’s ultimate V.I.P experience carnival band, to have her be their official ambassador. Louise gracefully

accepted the title of the Red Queen and to echo their revolution in her life they invested in her well being including that of her participation in the St.Lucia National Carnival Queen Show on July 9th where she glided off with the title of Carnival Queen 2010! Hence forth, as protocol for the nation’s queen she competed in the Miss Carival 2011 pageant where she landed 4th place and the Miss Jaycee’s 2011 pageant where she was titled 3rd runner up and was crowned Miss Photogenic! Miss Victor was

certainly strutting down the yellow brick road! In December of 2011, Queen Louise struck the title of 2nd runner up and won the Best in Evening Gown award in the Miss Caribbean Hibiscus pageant! The Red Queen continued to be a persevering ambassador for her nation as she blossomed into the Caribbean spotlight. In August of 2012 she took part in the Miss Carib-bean Culture pageant in Nevis where she was awarded the titles of 2nd runner up and the best in swim wear. She then delivered a volcanic performance in Jamaica at the Miss Jamzone International Pageant, where she won the title of 1st runner up and claimed the People’s Choice award!

It was then she was inspired to hone her talents as a model and pageant extraordinaire to par-ticipate in the 2013 Miss Saint Lucia Universe Pageant. After edging out a former Miss World competitor and a Miss Bikini International competitor to claim her last title, Louise, as a rising performer certainly acquired inspiration to attempt the ultimate pageant in the world by first conditioning herself for the national event whiles focusing on her education! She said,” I want to complete my degree to be a well rounded queen. One that can truly be an ambassador to St. Lucia!”

A former student of the Micoud Infant & Primary School and the Vieux Fort Comprehensive Sec-ondary School, Louise was always competitive in the academic field and soon learned to bal-ance her studies with her burning desire to com-pete on the tracks, which constantly attempted to dominate her focus! She recognizes that education is rather costly and is a sound invest-ment and certainly won’t take it for granted! Her mother was quite supportive of her children’s love for sports and would make every effort to attend a sports meet! Being her parents only daughter she stated” I’m not spoiled, I’m loved!” Currently majoring in Business Administration and completing a minor in Marketing, Louise insists on maintaining a GPA above 3.5 in order to be on the Dean’s list at Monroe College.

This country girl thrives on community spirit and sought to be “an agent of change” within Micoud in order to increase social develop-ment and build youthful opportunities, hence the reason she became the P.R.O of the District Youth & Sports Council and later on the General Secretary of the National Youth Council. Youth governance enabled her to participate in OECS and CARICOM conferences and enunciate the views of the youth within the political houses in order to strike change into fruition. Despite financial and technical difficulties she and her team persevered in order to make a difference in young persons lives!

Louise yearns to obtain her Masters Degree in Fashion Marketing & Management primarily because of her passion for the fashion indus-try. Her experience in the Creative Arts sector coupled with the degree certainly will make her a credible entity in that field. You never know, she just may be the one to bring Tyra Banks to 758! “My ultimate measure of success is when I become a mother”. Es muy verdad! After achiev-ing dreams, who’s better to share your success with than your family?

The Red Queen urges youth to, “find something that you are passionate about, something that you believe in and pursue it. One of my phi-losophies is dream big otherwise it’s pointless. A goal without a plan is just a wish. Plan your dream and structure it. The more you believe it the more you achieve it. Very often people have degrees and truth is their heads are just empty. It pays to be an informed citizen, because you sound more credible and when you speak people will respect you for that informed per-spective, instead of ranting out something that you are not even sure about. We as a country should invest in creating a more knowledge based citizenry to spark the momentum for people to actually recognize the importance of higher education.”

When asked about her thoughts on the en-hancement of our culture and the creative arts sector she wrenched her heart out into her

Once upon a time, in the beautiful village of Micoud, Saint Lucia, lived an athletic, educated and gorgeous maiden by the name of Louise Victor! Louise was quite familiar with fairy tales and folk lore, but she never knew about the magical tornado of change that was about to blow her life into Eden!

perspectives. “Investment has to begin from our education system.” Louise believes that young people are consumed by foreign culture. Nobel laureates are celebrated for one week in an entire year and we lose sight of our culture and visions. Folks from other countries are more patriotic from early ages and many countries see the patriotism of other nations as arro-gance. People look down on the local country folks because they speak patois, “But this is me appreciating my culture”. The Ministry of Culture should emphasize on such focuses by bringing incentives to build our culture into spirited new heights. Jounen Kwéyòl activities are not as authentic as before. By selling plastic toys for children at such events instead of playing ring games, Jack stone, Chiney skip and Morel, how are we molding the seedlings of our nation to grow culturally ecstatic?

‘Lou Lou’ truly is a country girl at heart. “Home is where the heart is!” When she isn’t available to participate in Micould events she would attempt to seek sponsorship for her people and plans to invest more into her community when she slows down her schedule! A lover of avocado which is as soft as her heart and coconut water which is as refreshing as joyous laughter, Louise is truly an amazing woman! Despite loving Micould, Louise sees Soufriere as her Staycation spot on island! “I can’t get over how majestic the Pitons are and the greenry! I am a nature lover but nature doesn’t love me!” Mosquitoes love no one Louise!

Miss Victor reminisced on her most precious moment! Her youngest brother Leon is her big-

gest fan! He even refers to her as his “Queen sister”! Despite being asthmatic he persevered in sports and one day told her that he made it on the national under 17 football team! He overcame his illness and is a trend setter himself! Only one thing can rip this family love! The Football Premier League! She is a die hard Manchester United fanatic! Louise’s mother certainly has to issue yellow cards in the house to her children and husband who support differ-ent teams! But when it’s all said and done, we can simply say,”what’s love without war?” This virtuous Saint Lucian Queen truly is a bouillon of diversity and a young leading lady within the Caribbean!

tions to take a positive walk in life!” She empha-sizes on that point by saying that if she ever comes to “a status of fame and fortune” on an international level she would use that to promote things which benefit children, after all simple goes a long way and it’s the little things that matter! So tell me, what makes a model? This island girl is truly local with an understanding of international standards! Morale, creativity and diligence are certainly second nature to this young twenty-something year old Caribbean model and she epitomizes the foundation of the term “model extraordinaire!”

Have you ever experienced that out-standing moment which compelled you to give someone a “high five”? Have you ever met someone whose personality depicted that awesome moment? I have and she is the elite

model Davika Hill hailing from the beautiful island of Bermuda!

With an accent and passion which exhuberated from her being as genuine as the shell of a leather back turtle, Davika spoke about her love for work-ing with children, especially because she is an only child. After working in the H.R department of a bank training employees in professional development, being a creative being, this challenged Davika to further her education in obtaining a degree in Early Childhood Education, especially because she is family oriented!

Davik’s, as her St.Lucian friends would call her, is an avid writer of poetry and spoken word and she would attend open mike sessions back home in Bermuda! “The art, the work put into it, what in-spired the designer, the photographer and how it all comes together to tell a story!” Truly a soulful entity, this diverse model sees the world of fashion for the creative artistic Utopia which it blatantly is!

This young elite model seeks to push fashion as an art in Bermuda! “Modeling is not all about being a bubbly airhead. It’s an art form and you have to know how to put different moods into the clothing and match it to the clothing. The setting and facial expressions and everything has to come together to create this art and display the designer’s art to the best that it can be displayed!”

Miss Hill has never considered fusing her pas-sion for fashion, Early Childhood Education and psychology but it is something to ponder! As a dynamic young lady and an only child, her family is quite supportive of her ventures and is quite excited about her accomplishments, including her participation in the 2011 Miss Bermuda Pageant! Being inspired by the accomplishments of her Saint Lucian management team, Davika has no doubts that her dreams will come into fruition!

Davika spoke about the increase in gang violence in Bermuda and believes that there is still hope for the youth to divert their life in a positive direction. “You don’t have to take the same path as your fam-ily or friends. Don’t be restricted by your community. There’s a whole world out there!” Davika currently works with children and states,”Working with chil-dren is your way of encouraging the future genera-

After the launch of the 2012 Christmas season with its annual Christmas Fashion Fusion Show on Saturday 8th December, the JQ Rodney Bay Mall selected two young models to represent

the mall for 2013.

Manager of the JQ Rodney Bay Mall Daria Ernest, presented the two models, Ayana Whitehead and Jarron Alexander, to the public in January, saying they would be the new faces of the mall for 2013. Ms Ernest said the two young models will be attached to the mall in various roles in the coming year.

Their prizes included a gift from the Mall, a photo shoot, a spread in Tonight Magazine, and the opportunity to model regionally, with Richard Young from Trinidad.

The two young models, Jarron Alexander and Ayana Whitehead said they were looking for-ward to representing the JQ Rodney Bay Mall, and thanked them for the opportunity given to them.

THE SOUL OF A BEING OUGHT TO BE CHERISHED MORE THAN THE WORKS OF THAT ENTITY. BY DOING SO YOU UPLIFT THAT PERSON AND ACKNOWLEDGE THEM IN MORE RESPECTS THAN YOU COULD POSSIBLY IMAGINE! WHO IS THE ENTITY CALLED RONALD “BOO” HINKSON? HE CERTAINLY IS THE PIED STRUMMER OF THE HELEN OF THE WEST INDIES! BUT IS HE ONLY A MUSICIAN WHO HAS ACCOM-PLISHED MANY REMARKABLE FEATS?

As a young boy growing up in a humble family, the first musi-cal that Boo ever played was rum bottles! Ronald would put different amounts of water to get a variation of notes in bottles such as the Mount Gay Rum bottles and play exciting

rhythms and later on moved on to the accordion. One day, after grabbing a guitar which belonged to one of his many brothers, Boo decided to hone his skills! His mother, a talented guitarist, trained her young son to develop his skills in the musical art.

While attending the Anglican Infant and Primary school, Boo would perform at concerts at the end of the school term. After entering the esteemed St.Mary’s College, Ronald started the Tru Tones Band. He would travel to St.Vincent with his home work on the weekend and return after performing at events only to attend school on Monday morning and then return to St.Vincent in the afternoon on a chattered plane! He thought it was the norm for a “kid growing up on a little island.” In hindsight, as young people growing up, it was indeed exceptional! He always knew to be successful he would have to write his own songs. Boo always wanted to be a professional musician, but his mother recom-mended that he developed work ethics because no one had been successful as a musician on the island in those days. Rick Wayne who was already entertaining internationally paid him fre-quent visits and stimulated his growth! Tru Tones has toured Germany, Toronto and London, trav-elled extensively throughout the Caribbean and even performed at Carifesta and Super Bowl 13! Boo didn’t know about American football hence the reason he did not know how great it was to have performed at the press party the night before the game until he became sensitized on the American culture! In his days St.Lucian artists were sought after for performances with foreign artists and now they are the ones who seek after these artists to collaborate with and hustle as performers! “That was our turf and these guys couldn’t come here and take our crown.” Skilled young local artists need more support with regards to marketing.

Boo is quite proud of the commendable work which the Cultural Industry has done thus far. “It is now time for the artists to work hard at their craft.” The music is there but marketing strategies need to be developed. “Anybody can put their music on the internet to market it, but you need to know how to direct people to your music.” Ronald is impressed with the number of local talented music writers, especially the young ones!

Boo suggest that artists obtain an agent to as-sist them because, “The more things you take on the less time you focus on creating music.” He has foreign managers who take care of his bookings and market his talent. “Some of us need to learn to be managed. Some of us have a manager but do not want to be managed. It doesn’t work so!” Listen and allow yourself to be guided by that person and trust them. “It’s not always about the money.” His locally released CDs aren’t the same as those released over-seas. Different markets have varying trends. The U.S has segmented markets and the laws which are created to attract your target market must be heeded. Managers guide by educating the artists on the target market and even decide the dress code for varying events in order to help build that buzz around them, especially when the artist is not familiar with that market! It’s about building your image. Learning how to lis-ten and internalize. You must also not lose track of your creative vibe whiles being managed. By ‘divorcing’ yourself from bookings you allow yourself more time to create music and also be less compelled to do work for free. Despite that, Boo handles his local bookings!

“I think the time I am happiest is when we have family gatherings.” Our society would be in less turmoil if we had stronger family bonds. His family has constantly supported his music and is the reason why he is the great musician that he is. All he had to do is apply himself and be disciplined to accomplish his achievements. He calls his wife Donna his African Queen because of her striking features and exquisite bald head. Ronald is a very picky eater and she tolerates his dietary habits and he deeply appreciates her support and patience. He loves eating nuts & ground provisions and drinking fresh juice. For over 40 years Alcohol and soda consumption are taboo and so are canned foods and smok-ing. It requires discipline and he is nonchalant when folks try to waver his decisions. “I deter-mine what is good for me! I still enjoy life to a

great extent!” He has great love for their three children Heidi, Shawn & Vanya. “ At the end of a big show you have to return to the people who love you.” Boo, like many guitarists, can play the bass guitar. After decades of practice, music composing is now second nature. Other young people can achieve his accomplishments if they have great family support! Ronald “Boo” Hinkson has performed at many grand locations and for many famous people. He recalls performing for the former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, during his visit to St.Lucia, at the Super Bowl half time show and with Al Jerome among many other vintage artists. One remarkable moment was when mas-ter guitarist George Benson called him from the crowd at a show to perform on stage with him! It was something which Mr. Benson rarely does! His last biggest performance was at the Lincoln Center in New York and will be performing in Tampa, Florida soon. Boo’s greatest musical highlight occurred when he met and performed for Sir Nelson Mandela whom he views as a “great human being.” Sir Nelson overcame his Hellish trials and came out without anger and promoted peace and prosperity!

What’s the toughest thing about his career? “Trying to get my friends to forget my music. I don’t want to lose my identity as Boo.” He refus-es to autograph CDs which friends would bring to him because their status in his life changes from “friends” to “fans.” Both are essentials but he would rather if they saw him on the personal level which he desires from them. “I want to be humble about this whole thing.” People would try to overcharge him for food items in the market just because he is a major public figure. Many would get lost in fame and lose their identity and he wants people to treat him normally. “To my friends in my country I am just Boo walking the street.” But all of that has been changing over the years!

The first time he opened a show for George Benson was nerve racking! Boo burst a string and played the entire concert with five strings on his guitar! He got comfortable with the situ-ation when a guy walked up to him and stated that he witnessed that moment on BET and was amazed that he pulled it off! At the time Boo felt like he was a laughing stock and did not know that the public appraised him instead for accomplishing such a feat! He looks up to artists such as Luther Francois, Barbara Cadet,

Music Scoop with Boo

Page 31: Touche Magazine 6

Emerson Nurse, George Benson, John Scofield & Tal Farlow! As a child, Boo followed a man called Ah-Ply who would sing and play music in his drunken state. Boo saw him as a guy who shared his passion and not a mere drunkard. Ah-ply and the Bousquet brothers who, at their barbershop in Castries would play local musical instruments, are also icons in his life. Some of them are not as accomplished as he is, but he rides on their shoulders because they impacted his life. He does not see them every day, but as a man of prayer he is thankful for what they have done for him!

Ronald yearns to bring a young artist with him to get the experience in a big show. He loves seeing young people succeed. “We’re full of talented young people here. They just need a break! They just need somebody to listen to them. Give them that one shot and you’ll be sur-prised at what they can do! Life is about people.” He is conscious about who and what makes him happy. “It’s always good to analyze your source of happiness. There are people who are happy when they are drunk, but guess what? They can hurt themselves!” They can certainly hurt others as well! For over two years Boo has been man-aging and funding his private education project in Wilton’s Yard in St.Lucia! This project seeks to stimulate the growth of the youth within this community and provide more work opportunity

for teachers! “I read to improve my intellect.” Boo is an avid reader. He reads for “gathering information.” He enjoys having sensible & intellectual conversa-tions. At times it’s alright to let people think that you are ignorant of certain information. Self-de-velopment is a never ending process. You must be comfortable with who you are but you must never be comfortable enough to cease growing. If I become a great human being I will automati-cally become a great musician.” He doesn’t want to be a great musician who has failed and it is not an easy task. You can’t measure your suc-cess by your own yard stick all the time. “There has to be an external yard stick and you have to make sure you choose it well.” This causes you to constantly aspire to become a great human being. He puts 3 hours of practice every day.

Many are great at their work and are deemed successful by the Media because of their finan-cial accomplishments! Society needs to redefine what success is. Young people view success as great financial stature and sacrifice their virtues and conscience to attain it, thus causing some of society’s greatest issues. We need to find a balance. The Pied Strummer of Fair Helen does not condone crime but believes what many view as crime is what others see as survival. Percep-tion varies. You must not ask of people what you are not prepared to do for them. You can’t

ask someone to deviate from their norm without providing a motivational reason. A situation must be addressed for change to occur. Boo men-tioned the African phrase, “If you don’t share your wealth you’ll have to share my poverty!” We endure and celebrate the effects of Karma as a universal family because we truly are our brother’s keeper!

“I want to find that one song that could bring St.Lucia a Grammy because if that happens it’d be bigger than Boo! It’d be St.Lucia!” When he performs internationally he sees himself as Saint Lucia performing and not as Boo Hinkson! Boo wants to give his country more identity, hence the reason his next big performance will feature him singing in Kwéyòl! Ronald and legendary St. Lucian cricketer Darren Sammy have soul resonance and are now great friends. The West Indies cricket captain is one of Boo’s icons! “He is a great St. Lucian and has done so much for Saint Lucians. Young people can see the dream of being a cricketer as a reality. “Darren is a great guy and he must be supported whole-heartedly!”So tell me, who is Ronald “Boo” Hinkson? This amazing man certainly has a ton under his belt and walks as light as a feather. If you simply ask me I would tell you, “Boo is a Great Human Being!”

Update your look

Simple, stylish idea

Because looking good is one of the keys to self confidence, Touché Magazine happily presents you with Tips to better dressing. Below are a few hints that will change your appearance and give you that much needed boost in confidence.A If you have slim shoulders: Introduce width and bulk to the upper body area. Horizontal stripes, a little extra padding in a suit jacket and an English spread-collar shirt all accom-

plish that just fine, but be careful. It's easy to go overboard with stripes or padding and pack on pounds instead of working out your shoulder-to-waist ratio.

B If you have a short torso: Draw the eyes downward. Slightly longer sport coats, vertical stripes and pants with a lower rise add inches to your upper half and literally balance the body from top to bottom. It's worth mentioning, however, that the clothes you pick to fix your proportions need to fit properly. A shapeless shirt or jacket and baggy pants, no matter their pattern or inseam, won't strengthen your shape. Wear pants that are your size, also not tucking in whatever you've tossed on top -- like a tee, sweater or slim-fit Oxford -- will only get you closer to realizing the ratio.

C If you have a long torso: Wear pants with a higher rise. It's a tough thing for most men to understand (mainly because we tend to trot around in trousers that come nowhere near the waistline). Opting for suit jackets, coats and hoodies, even tee shirts, which just barely brush

the bottom of your behind, can also lengthen your lower half.

D If you have a narrow face: Go for glasses that are bigger, broader and tipped at the temple with a decorative detail. A larger frame helps shorten the face, while an extra element on the sides adds width. Check out a classic wayfarer or browline style. The depth of the lens and sturdiness of the acetate eliminate the oblong issue, along with the assistance of those iconic metal tears.

E If you have a thick waistline: Balance it out by broadening your shoulders. Remember: The golden ratio is a proportion, so everything is relative. Even if you're hauling around some heft, widening your upper half and creating a strong, structured silhouette through your midsection can help get you golden. But that's only half the battle of mastering your physique. You should also look for a lower stance, single-button closure, peak lapels and a firmer fabric like velvet. They're all tricks of the trade to help lean out your lines.

CPR Direct “Your cell phone superstore”

No matter what your mobile phone looks like, or what brand or model it is, you should treat it with respect by taking proper care of it. Mobile phones are a very important means of communication and often fairly expensive. Therefore, take care of it by following these steps.

STEP 1

Research to find out which phone you want before you purchase a new one. Make sure it is a brand and model that you’re happy with, from its features to the quality of its design. If you purchase a phone you don’t like (or get a cheap one included with a con-

tract), you may be more “careless” with it because you “care less” about it.Designate a safe place to keep and store your phone when not in use. For example, on a desk, bookshelf, or in a cabinet would be fine. Do not keep your phone stored in a purse or other closed container for extended periods of time unless it is powered off. Charging a mobile phone in a closed container is a potential fire hazard and may shorten its lifespan. Li-ion batteries (typical for most phones) give off heat when charged and when discharging.

STEP 2

Take your phone with you when-ever possible. Never let your phone leave your sight. Avoid lending your phone to others, even if done under your supervision, as accidents can and will happen once in a while.

STEP 3

Keep your phone dry. Don’t talk on your cell phone while it’s rain-ing, do not eat or drink near the phone, and avoid carrying it near open water (ie: a pond, the beach, or toilets).

STEP 4

Turn off the ringer on your phone when you’re in a class, a lecture, a meeting, etc. Even in rela-tively every-day activities such as watching a movie in a movie theater, or attending church, it is polite to keep your ringer on vibrate or turned off. The last thing you want to do is frantically try to turn off your ringer in these sce-narios. Doing so risks accidentally dropping or damaging the phone.

STEP 5

Clean your phone regularly. Use dry tissue paper or alcohol wipes to clean the phone’s exterior surfaces. Do not use water, baby wipes, or other cleaners that may inadvertent-ly add moisture to your phone.

STEP 6

Recharge your cell phone on a regular schedule. Some phones will last more than a week or more on a single charge (when not in use), while others may need to be charged every day or every other day. If you spend too much time talking on your phone, you can quickly use up your battery’s charge.

Take Proper Care of Your New Cell Phone!
