DAY 1: TUESDAY, JULY 16, 2013Welcome & Bike Fit

Road Bike: Alpe d’Huez to Col de Sarenne Loop Approximately 30 miles with 5,500 feet of climbing

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Best Western Terminus (10 Place de la Gare, 38000 Grenoble, France) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Your Pro race adventure at the historic 100th Edition of the Tour de France begins with a 90 minute shuttle from Grenoble to the heart of the Alps and the village of Alpe d’Huez. After a satisfying lunch and a professional bike fit, dive into today’s ride on a climb making its debut in Stage 18 of this year’s Tour: the Col de Sarenne. Coined “the B side of Alpe d’Huez,” this quiet road is popular with locals and you will discover the twists and turns as you ride up. An exhilarating descent takes you to the breathtaking balcony road above the scenic Romanche River Valley and to the small alpine village of La Garde 4 kilometers into the infamous climb of Alpe d’Huez. Test your legs like the Pros as you ascend these infamous switchbacks up to your mountaintop hotel. Tonight your guides will host a rousing round of introductions over cocktails and a Savoyard meal at your hotel. Trade insights and updates on the race before resting up for another great day of alpine riding.

DAY 2: WEDNESDAY, JULY 17, 2013Road Bike: Alpe d’Huez to Col du Glandon return Approximately 55 miles with 92 feet of climbing

Avid Option: Alpe d’Huez to Col du Glandon to Col de la Croix de Fer return Approximately 58 miles with 9,850 feet of climbing

Attack another day of thigh burning climbs and rapid descents with a relentless push over Col du Glandon first featured in the 1947 Tour and showcased again in Stage 19 this year. You’ll start the climb at Lac du Verney which often hosts the swim of the Alpe d’Huez triathalon and ascend 1150 meters over 24 kilometers “enjoying” the 10% grade of your last 3 kilometers. At the top you’ve earned the fresh alpine air and dramatic mountain views this remote area affords for the short time the road is open (from June to October). As always your Trek Travel guides will have water and snacks available for you to rest and refuel. If you have the legs, continue up the 2.5 kilometers to the summit of nearby Col de la Croix de Fer, featured in last year’s Tour. After a satisfying mountain lunch opt to shuttle back to the hotel or enjoy a lightning fast descent and the last climb back to Alpe d’Huez where you can refresh before dinner and get a good night’s rest at your hotel in anticipation of tomorrow’s exciting mountaintop finish.

DAY 3: THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2013Road Bike: Alpe d’Huez to Bourg d’Oisans return Approximately 20 miles with 3,800 feet of climbing

Mountaintop Finish Viewing on Alpe d’Huez

Begin today descending Alpe d’Huez in the cool morning air. Words can’t do justice to the scene, as hundreds of thousands of people line the roads to see cycling history unfold. At the bottom of your descent, turn your bike around and head back up the 21 switchbacks you just came from for a race day ascent like nothing you’ve ever experienced. The road is sticky with fresh paint and a sea of Dutch fans in orange are dancing as music fills the air. It is a party like no other! At the top, you’ll find a prime Trek Travel viewing spot just a short stroll from the course with a refreshing lunch, open bar, and live TV coverage where you can cheer the Pros as they whiz by en route to the Col de Sarenne, descend and begin their historic second ascent for a dramatic finish on the mountaintop. Relive the excitement of today’s historic race over dinner in a bistro of your choice with your fellow travelers while looking forward to another day of challenging cycling and live race action.

Hotel | Royal Ours Blanc | www.HotelRoyalOursBlanc.com

DAY 4: FRIDAY, JULY 19, 2013Road Bike: Alpe d’Huez to Col d’Ornon Loop Approximately 46 miles with 8,500 feet of climbing

Avid Option: Alpe d’Huez to Col d’Ornon to Entraigues Loop Approximately 63 miles with 10,500 feet of climbing

Today’s Pro Stage includes the ominous Col du Glandon followed by the demanding 2000 meter summit of Col de la Madeleine, all in the first 100 kilometers! Head down this morning to mingle at the stage start where the teams prep in Bourg d’Oisans. Stroll the electrified and crowded streets, picking up a souvenir jersey or enjoy a signature alpine crepe. Choose your own spot among the legions of fans as the excitement builds and the racers depart for this truly heroic mountain stage. After, start your own ride today warming your legs on the Col d’Ornon, ridden by the Pros yesterday before their battle on Alpe d’Huez. Rest a moment at the top with sweeping views of the Rhône-Alpes before descending back to the valley. Or, if you are game for more riding, descend to the quaint village of Entraigues and attack the col once more for bragging rights at dinner. Be sure to leave some gas in the tank for your final climb back up those infamous 21 switchbacks to your hotel atop Alpe d’Huez.

GRENOBLEIf you have the time, consider staying in Grenoble at the beginning of your trip to further explore the diverse activities this French town offers. Grenoble has numerous outdoor activities, including via ferrata -- a mountain route equipped with fixed cables, ladders, and bridges providing access to otherwise isolated routes to climbers with a variety of skills. Not to be missed in this Rhône-Alpes town is a ride up the télépherique: egg-shaped cable cars, les bulles, take you across the Isère river to the bastille, a series of ancient fortifications. Enjoy the view from the summit, then wander the many trails leading down to the city. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Park Hôtel | 10 Place Paul Mistral | 33 (0) 4 76 85 81 23 | www.Park-Hotel-Grenoble.fr | ~$395

Patrick Hôtel | 116, cours de la Libération | 33 (0) 4 76 21 26 63 | www.PatrickHotel-Grenoble.com | ~$133

Located close to Grenoble’s city center, this hotel offers you many of the modern comforts you enjoy.

Best Western Terminus | 10, place de la Gare | 33 (0) 4 76 87 24 33 | www.Terminus-Hotel-Grenoble.fr | ~$175

This Belle Epoque hotel (1906), with modern conveniences such as air-conditioning and WiFi Internet access, is conveniently located just across the street from the Grenoble train station.

PARIS, FRANCE

Paris is home to many of the world’s best-known monuments and museums, including the famous Arc de Triomphe, which sits majestically at the top end of the Champs-Elysées. Go to the observation deck for an expansive view down the world-famous boulevard from Napoléon’s huge triumphal arch—the largest in the world. You’ll also find impressive views from the white dome of the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, from atop the 56 floors of the Tour Montparnasse, and of course at the summit of the most famous monument in Paris—la Tour Eiffel. The city also boasts some of the world’s best museums, including the renowned Musée du Louvre where you can visit one of the world’s greatest art collections and admire such famous works as the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:
