Whether the 2017 Expo is given to Liege or not, - the decision will be made next November - large scale urban projects will be launched like the return of the tram, the development of the district in front of the new Gare des Guillemins and the creation of an eco- district on the very Expo site. «www.liege-expo2017.com «www.provincedeliege.be 10 times stage town - 192,000 inhabitants (Liégeois) The Parc d’Avroy, a landscaped park in the centre of Liège, is located on an artificial island.

Val Saint-Lambert Castle

2 times stage town - 63,300 inhabitants (Sérésiens)Famous beyond its borders for the site of Val Saint-Lambert, a real gem for all stone, glass and crystal lovers, Seraing is characterized by its diverse land-scapes composed of one third housing, one third for-est and one third industries and businesses. It is now preparing to mark a great turning point in its history. Large-scale urban projects are now underway with, in the medium term, the creation of an urban boulevard. The boulevard, which will cross the city from east to west, will result in a reorganization of the space with the creation of new economic centres and the conver-sion of former industrial sites. At the same time, the city will continue to take care of its many treasures: the three castles of Jemeppe, the main Church and its baptismal fonts from the twelfth century, the site of Val Saint-Lambert and the Sérésien forests where 1,200 hectares are an excellent sports field. All these natural assets, initiatives and joint efforts have one objective: to successfully negotiate the great change that is underway in Seraing.«www.seraing.be «www.liegetourisme.be

10 times stage town - 192,000 inhabitants (Liégeois)The Place Saint-Lambert will host the official ceremony of the Tour de France, a place devastated on 13 December 2011 by an act of madness by a crazed gunman who took five innocent lives and injured over a hundred. The organisers wished to honour them while the Liégeois felt united in adversity: «They have always held their heads high» in the words of the sixteenth century Michel de l’Hospital, Francis I’s Chancellor, quote engraved on the walls of the city. Third largest city in the country and economic capital of Wallonia, Liège has turned the page from a heavy industrial past and invested resolutely in industries of the future like biotechnology, space and sustainable development. Thanks to its location in the heart of Europe, Liège, easily accessible by air (Bierset is the eighth European freight airport), land (at the core of six motorways and high speed railway lines) and water (its river port authority is the third in Europe), now also offers a multimodal logistics platform, Liège Trilogiport.«www.vues-de-liege.be «www.departdutour2012.be

The 3 Visé Guilds – Old Crossbowmen, Old Arquebusiers, Francs Arquebusiers

The Escaut quais

2 times stage town - 69,000 inhabitants (Tournaisiens)Crossed by l’Escaut, Tournai is one of the oldest cities in Belgium. Near Brussels, Paris and London, a veritable crossroads of cultures, it has been under French, Austrian, Spanish and English control in the past. Testament to its past, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Belfry, symbols of spiritual and temporal powers, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A country town (Tournai as a whole is composed of twenty-nine villages), Tournai invites you to discover the museum of Fine Art where the only two paintings by Manet are kept in Belgium. Fabulous works in a setting that is even more special since it was the only museum designed by renowned architect Victor Horta. Fourth largest city of Belgian Hainaut, Tournai invites you to stroll along the banks of the Escaut, whilst the Mont-Saint-Aubert, its highest point, is a paradise for cyclists and poets. Tournai is also part of the Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai Eurometropolis, the European grouping of territorial cooperation at the heart of a community with more than two million inhabitants.«www.tournai.be

First time stage-town - 17,000 inhabitants (Visétois)Capital of the Lower Meuse, the only French-speaking city to have a shared border with the Netherlands, Visé is midway between Liege and Maastricht. This location has enabled it to develop its importance as a transportation hub and at the same time increase its tourist numbers thanks to a rich heritage. These include in particular the Town Hall built in the seventeenth century whose bulbous steeple rises to over thirty meters and whose chimes ring with the life of the city every quarter of an hour, the Collegiate and its Gothic choir, the Perron, once a symbol of authority of the Prince-Bishops of the Principality of Liege or even the shrine of Saint Hadelin, jewel of 11th century Mosan art. Visé, which also includes three guilds of crossbowmen and arquebusiers, is also nicknamed the City of the Goose. This relates to a traditional recipe where the bird is cooked in a vegetable stock before being covered in a garlic sauce. Market town but also a city of leisure, traditions, culture and sport, life is good in Visé.«www.vise.be «www.provincedeliege.be
