    1. DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

    Neuromuscular disorders include approximately 60 separate disorders that have incommon the progressive and irreversible wasting o muscle tissue.

    Each year in Australia, 1 in 1000 children are born with an inherited neuromuscularcondition. These children are destined to a lie o diculty, oten shortened by

    complications as a result o their weak muscles.

    The most common inherited neuromuscular disorder is Duchenne MuscularDystrophy (DMD), which aects 1 in 3500 boys. DMD results in a progressivedegeneration o the muscles o the limbs, diaphragm and heart, with boys losing theability to perorm the simplest o unctions, such as scratching their noses, by theirmid teens. Boys with DMD typically die in their early 20s rom respiratory ailure, asthe muscles o breathing are no longer able to unction.

    There is no cure or DMD and the many other orms o Muscular Dystrophy. We

    can, however, oer amilies treatment and hope or the uture. All we need is yoursupport.

    2. WHAT IS THE TOUR DUCHENNE?

    The Tour Duchenne was rst held in 2009 and is the brain child o Julian Thompson.Julian and Sharyn Thompson heard the terrible news o their boy James, theinspiration o The Tour Duchenne having Duchenne MD on Fathers Day 2007.

    It was whilst training or another charity event held oshore that Julian thought thathe should do something in Australia to raise more awareness and much neededunds or the ght to nd a cure or his son and the other kids and amilies who areghting this disease every day.

    And so, the Tour Duchenne Million Dollar Challenge was born.

    Like the name suggests our aim is to raise over $1 million or the ght o DuchenneMuscular Dystrophy. To help support the Duchenne community with services,acilities, care and respite needs and to help nd a cure or one o the mostinsidious diseases that aects mainly boys early in their lives.

    At present, there is no cure or Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. A devastating,progressive muscle-destroying disorder, it connes kids to an electric wheelchairprematurely and signicantly reduces their lie expectancy.

    Whilst we continue our ght or a cure, many kids and amilies need assistance intheir lives with wheelchairs, breathing machines, house and car modications andmany other services.

    The next Tour Duchenne event will take place in March 2014 and will see 50

    cyclists travel over 1,152 grueling kilometres in 8 days rom Adelaide to Melbourne.

These are actively promoted in the local communities in the lead up to the eventand will provide you with an opportunity to engage them.

    School Visits

    The school visits are a real highlight or all involved. We will visit at least 3 primaryschools on the ride and speak to the kids, teachers and parents about DMD and ridesaety. The visit is promoted within the school in the weeks leading up to our visit asthe kids participate in a colouring in competition to win great prizes as provided by ourwonderul sponsors. A perect way to connect to the local community.
